Claims
- 1. In a disc service brake for a vehicle of the type having a brake disc rotatable with a vehicle wheel, first and second brake shoes including backing plates with brake linings attached thereto, a caliper including an inside surface surrounding and retaining the brake linings of said first and second brake shoes respectively adjacent opposed radial faces of said brake disc, a cam carrier, pivotally supporting first and second cams, movably mounted between said caliper and the backing plate of said first brake shoe, said cam carrier having an elongated surface for bearing against said backing plate, means for exerting force between said first and second cams and said caliper when said disc service brake is actuated whereby said elongated surface is moved into force-transmitting contact with the backing plate of said first brake shoe, and first and second resilient means at distal ends of said cam carrier between each of said ends and said caliper for pulling said cam carrier with said first and second cams contained therein toward the inside surface of said caliper means and away from the backing plate of said first brake shoe.
- 2. The improvement recited in claim 1 wherein each said resilient means is a spring biased in tension between said caliper and said cam carrier.
- 3. The improvement recited in claim 2 further comprising:
- (a) first means for attaching a first end of said spring to said cam carrier; and
- (b) second means for attaching a second end of said spring to said caliper.
- 4. The improvement recited in claim 3 wherein said first means for attaching comprises:
- (a) at least one stepped hole in said cam carrier, the smaller bore of said at least one stepped hole being closer to said caliper; and
- (b) a stepped diameter on said spring, the smaller diameter being adapted to passing through the smaller diameter of said at least one stepped hole, the larger diameter of said spring being smaller than the larger diameter of said at least one stepped bore and larger than the smaller diameter of said stepped bore.
- 5. The improvement recited in claim 4 wherein said second means for attaching comprises:
- (a) at least one bore in said caliper, said at least one bore being substantially coaxial with said at least one stepped bore, the diameter of said at least one bore being larger than the diameter of said spring;
- (b) a flat spring retainer connected to the second end of said spring;
- (c) a lobe on said flat spring retainer;
- (d) a waist region in said flat spring retainer having a narrower width than said lobe;
- (e) a circular washer containing a rectangular slot, the diameter of said washer being greater than the diameter of said at least one boro, the length of said rectangular slot being greater than said lobs, and the width of said rectangular slot being greater than said waist region and less than said lobe; and
- (f) a linear depression in said circular washer.
