Claims
- 1. In a vehicle having at least one axle and at least one disc service brake of the type having at least one friction member adapted to frictional contact with the radial face of a brake disc, the improvement comprising:
- (a) a caliper;
- (b) means for holding said friction member adjacent to said brake disc;
- (c) at least one lever;
- (d) means for applying force to said at least one lever;
- (e) a cam carrier mounted between said caliper and said at least one friction member;
- (f) cam means pivoted to said cam carrier, said cam means being actuated by said at least one lever for exerting force in response to said applied force to said caliper;
- (g) said cam means applying opposing force through at least one pivot to said cam carrier;
- (h) means on said cam carrier for bearing against said friction member and exerting said opposing force on said friction member, and exerted force being effective to urge said friction member into frictional contact with said brake disc;
- (i) means on said cam carrier for preventing rotation of said cam means about an axis parallel to the axis of the brake disc during actuation thereof; and
- (j) said means for applying force acting on said lever with a line of action substantially parallel to the face of said brake disc.
- 2. The improvement recited in claim 1 wherein said means for holding comprises:
- (a) attachment means adapted to non-rotatable attachment to the vehicle axle; and
- (b) said caliper means is attached to said attachment means.
- 3. The improvement recited in claim 2 wherein said attachment means comprises:
- (a) a torque plate adapted to attachment to an axle flange;
- (b) a support plate rigidly attached to said torque plate;
- (c) opposed grooves in said caliper means; and
- (d) parallel surfaces on said support plate which slidably fit said opposed grooves.
- 4. The improvement recited in claim 3 wherein:
- (a) said means for applying force is rigidly attached to said torque plate;
- (b) said force is transmitted from said means for applying force to said at least one lever through at least one hingeable joint; and
- (c) said at least one lever is adapted to move with respect to said caliper means.
- 5. The improvement recited in claim 1 wherein said cam means for exerting force comprises:
- (a) a first cam having a first lever connected to said means for applying force and a first pivot;
- (b) a force-transmitting rod;
- (c) means for connecting one end of said force-transmitting rod to said first cam;
- (d) a second cam;
- (e) a second lever attached to said second cam;
- (f) means for connecting the second end of said force-transmitting rod to said second lever; and
- (g) second means for applying forces from said second cam between said means for holding and said friction member.
- 6. The improvement recited in claim 5 wherein said means for connecting comprises:
- (a) a hemispheric depression in at least said first lever; and
- (b) a hemispheric sleeve on said force-transmitting rod, said hemispheric sleeve fitting into said hemispheric depression.
- 7. The improvement recited in claim 5 wherein said means for applying forces comprises:
- (a) a pivot on said second cam;
- (b) means for applying force from said pivot to said at least one friction member;
- (c) a cam lip on said second cam;
- (d) means for engaging said cam lip; and
- (e) means on said engaging means for applying force to said means for holding.
- 8. The improvement recited in claim 7 wherein said second means for applying force comprises:
- (a) said pivot connecting said second cam to said cam carrier; and
- (b) said cam carrier applying force to said at least one friction member.
- 9. The improvement recited in claim 8 wherein said means on said carrier for applying force comprises a base on said cam carrier adapted to contact with said at least one friction member.
- 10. The improvement recited in claim 7 wherein said means on said engaging means comprises:
- (a) an adjusting nut;
- (b) said cam lip being in contact with one surface of said adjusting nut;
- (c) an adjusting screw engaged at one of its ends with said adjusting nut;
- (d) bearing means at the other end of said adjusting screw; and
- (e) said bearing means being in contact with said means for holding.
- 11. The improvement recited in claim 1 wherein said means for applying force comprises air-pressure means.
- 12. The improvement recited in claim 1 wherein said means for applying force comprises hydraulic-pressure means.
- 13. The improvement recited in claim 1 wherein said means for applying force comprises mechanical means.
- 14. In a vehicle having at least one axle, a brake controller and a disc service brake of the type having at least one friction member adapted to frictional contact with the radial face of a brake disc, the improvement comprising:
- (a) caliper means for holding said at least one friction member adjacent to said brake disc;
- (b) at least one lever;
- (c) means for applying force to said at least one lever;
- (d) means for attaching said caliper to said vehicle axle;
- (e) a cam carrier mounted between said caliper and said friction member;
- (f) a cam connected to said at least one lever;
- (g) a pivot on said cam carrier pivotably connecting said cam thereto;
- (h) means on said cam carrier for bearing against said at least one friction member and for transmitting force from said pivot to said at least one friction member;
- (i) a lip on said cam;
- (j) means for transmitting force from said lip to said caliper;
- (k) means on said cam carrier for preventing rotation of said cam means about an axis parallel to the axis of the brake disc during actuation thereof; and
- (l) said means for applying force acting on said lever with a line of action substantially parallel to the face of said brake disc.
- 15. The improvement recited in claim 14 wherein said means for attaching said caliper to said vehicle axis comprises:
- (a) a torque plate adapted to attachment to an axle flange;
- (b) a support plate rigidly attached to said torque plate;
- (c) opposed grooves in said caliper means; and
- (d) parallel surfaces on said support plate which slidably fit said opposed grooves.
- 16. The improvement recited in claim 14 wherein said means for applying force comprises an air-brake chamber adapted to receiving brake air pressure from said vehicle brake controller and exerting a linear force in response thereto.
- 17. The improvement recited in claim 16 further comprising:
- (a) a cantilever;
- (b) means for attaching a first end of said cantilever to said vehicle;
- (c) means for connecting said air-brake chamber to the second end of said cantilever;
- (d) means for transforming said linear force into a rotary torque;
- (e) an S-type cam;
- (f) shaft means for connecting said torque to said S-type cam, whereby said S-type cam is moved; and
- (g) rod means for transmitting the motion of said S-type cam to said at least one lever.
- 18. The improvement recited in claim 14 wherein said means for transmitting force from said pivot to said friction member comprises:
- (a) said pivot connecting said cam to said cam carrier; and
- (b) a base on said cam carrier adapted to contact with said at least one fricton member.
- 19. In a vehicle having axles and disc service brakes of the type having two friction members adapted to frictional contact with the two radial faces of a brake disc, the improvement comprising:
- (a) a caliper;
- (b) means for holding said two friction members adjacent to the radial surfaces of said brake disc;
- (c) at least one lever;
- (d) means for applying force to said at least one lever;
- (e) a cam carrier mounted between said caliper and said friction member;
- (f) cam means pivoted to said cam carrier and attached to said at least one lever for exerting force in response to said applied force between said caliper and said cam carrier;
- (g) said cam carrier bearing against and exerting force upon a first of said two friction members, said exerted force being in the direction to urge said first of said two friction members into braking frictional contact with a first radial surface of said brake disc;
- (h) means on said cam carrier for preventing rotation of said cam means about an axis parallel to the axis of the brake disc during actuation thereof;
- (i) said means for applying force acting on said lever with a line of action substantially parallel to the face of said brake disc; and
- (j) means on said caliper for transmitting force to a second of said friction members, said transmitted force being in the direction to urge said second of said two friction members into braking frictional contact with a second radial surface of said brake disc.
- 20. The improvement recited in claim 19 wherein said means for holding comprises:
- (a) attachment means adapted to non-rotatable attachment to the vehicle axle; and
- (b) said caliper means is attached to said attachment means.
- 21. The improvement recited in claim 20 wherein said attachment means comprises:
- (a) a torque plate adapted to attachment to an axle flange;
- (b) a support plate rigidly attached to said torque plate;
- (c) opposed grooves in said caliper means; and
- (d) parallel surfaces of said support plate which slidably fit said opposed grooves.
- 22. The improvement recited in claim 20, wherein said means for holding is said caliper means.
- 23. The improvement recited in claim 22 wherein said means for transmitting comprises:
- (a) at least one reaction leg on said caliper means said at least one reaction leg being located adjacent to said second friction member;
- (b) a force-application region on said caliper means wherein said exerted force is connected from said cam means to said caliper means; and
- (c) a transverse member which connects said at least one reaction leg to said force-application region.
- 24. The improvement recited in claim 19 wherein said cam means for exerting force comprises:
- (a) a first cam having a lever connected to said means for applying pressure and a first pivot;
- (b) a second cam having a second lever;
- (c) a third cam having a third lever;
- (d) means for connecting tension force from said first cam to said second lever;
- (e) means for connection compression force from said first cam to said third lever; and
- (f) means for applying forces from said second and third cams between said means for holding and said first friction member.
- 25. The improvement recited in claim 19 wherein said means for applying force comprises:
- (a) an air brake chamber;
- (b) means for connecting one end of said air brake chamber rigidly to said vehicle;
- (c) a chamber push rod in said air brake chamber adapted to generating linear force upon the introduction of air pressure into said air brake chamber; and
- (d) means for connecting said chamber push rod to said at least one lever.
- 26. The improvement recited in claim 25 wherein said means for connecting said air brake chamber is a cantilever.
- 27. The improvement recited in claim 26 wherein said means for connecting said chamber push rod comprises:
- (a) means for transforming said linear force into a rotary torque;
- (b) an S-type cam;
- (c) shaft means for connecting said torque to said S-type cam, whereby said S-type cam is moved; and
- (d) rod means for transmitting the motion of said S-type cam to said at least one lever.
- 28. In a vehicle having axles and disc service brakes of the type having two frictional members adapted to frictional contact with the two radial faces of a brake disc, the improvement comprising:
- (a) a caliper;
- (b) means for holding said two friction members adjacent to the radial surfaces of said brake disc;
- (c) two levers;
- (d) an air brake chamber;
- (e) means for connecting said air brake chamber between said two levers;
- (f) a chamber push rod in said air brake chamber adapted to generating linear force upon the introduction of air pressure into said air brake chamber;
- (g) a cam carrier mounted between said caliper and one of said friction members;
- (h) cam means pivoted to said cam carrier and attached to said two levers;
- (i) means on said cam carrier for preventing rotation of said cam means about an axis parallel to the axis of the disc during actuation thereof;
- (j) means for exerting force in response to motion of said two levers said force being exerted between said caliper and said cam carrier;
- (k) said cam carrier bearing against and exerting force on a first of said two friction members, said exerted force being in the direction to urge said first of said two friction members into braking frictional contact with a first radial surface of said brake disc;
- (l) means on said caliper for transmitting force to a second of said two friction members, said transmitted force being in the direction to urge said second of said two friction members into braking frictional contact with a second radial surface of said brake disc; and
- (m) said linear force acting on said levers with a line of action substantially parallel to one face of said brake disc.
- 29. In a vehicle having at least one axle and at least one disc service brake of the type having at least one friction member adapted to frictional contact with the radial face of a brake disc, the improvement comprising:
- (a) means for holding said friction member adjacent to said brake disc;
- (b) said means for holding comprising:
- (i) attachment means adapted to non-rotatable attachment to the vehicle axle; and
- (ii) caliper means attached to said attachment means;
- (c) said attachment means comprising:
- (i) a torque plate adapted to attachment to an axle flange;
- (ii) a support plate rigidly attached to said torque plate;
- (iii) opposed grooves in said caliper means; and
- (iv) parallel surfaces on said support plate which slideably fit said opposed grooves
- (d) at least one lever;
- (e) means for applying force to said at least one lever;
- (f) a cam carrier between said caliper and one of said friction members;
- (g) cam means pivoted to said cam carrier and actuated by said at least one lever for exerting force in response to said applied force to said cam carrier;
- (h) means on said cam carrier for bearing against said friction member and exerting force thereon, said force being effective to urge said friction member into frictional contact with said brake disc;
- (i) said cam means engaging means for transmitting opposing force to said caliper;
- (j) means on said cam carrier for preventing rotation of said cam means about an axis parallel to the axis of the disc during actuation thereof;
- (k) said means for applying force is rigidly attached to said torque plate;
- (l) said force is transmitted from said means for applying force to said at least one lever through at least one hingeable joint;
- (m) said means for applying force acting on said lever with a line of action substantially parallel to the face of said brake disc; and
- (n) said at least one lever is adapted to translate with respect to said caliper means.
