Claims
- 1. Apparatus for forming a cylindrical can body from a workpiece of substantially circular cross section comprising
- a male mandrel
- a female die having
- a face shaped in accordance with the desired can shape including
- flange forming means adjacent at least one axial end thereof for receiving the end of the workpiece upon formation thereof,
- neck forming means, adjacent said flange forming means, of a diameter substantially equal to that of the workpiece to provide a neck on the can being formed which has a diameter which is substantially equal to that of the workpiece, and
- an expanded section forming means on the side of said neck forming means opposite said flange forming means and extending toward the distal end of said female die,
- means for locating said mandrel within said die adjacent said face,
- means for positioning a workpiece within said die between said mandrel and said die face, and
- means for exerting a force on said mandrel to cause it to exert a generally radially outwardly directed force over the entire length of the can body to form a flange, neck, and expanded section in the workpiece.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein
- said female die face further includes
- said flange forming means and said neck forming means adjacent both ends thereof.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein
- said mandrel comprises a substantially cylindrical elastomeric member whereby, when said force exerting means acts upon said mandrel, the workpiece is initially fixed against said neck forming means and subsequently expanded, between the portions thereof thus fixed, into said receiving means.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein
- said mandrel comprises a substantially conically tapered elastometric member whereby, when said force exerting means acts upon said mandrel, the workpiece is initially fixed against one of said neck forming means, progressively expanded into said expanded section forming means in an axial direction toward the other of said neck forming means, and finally fixed against the other of said neck forming means.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein
- said mandrel comprises an expandable member and
- said means for exerting a force on said mandrel comprises
- means for injecting a fluid into said expandable member.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 including
- means on said mandrel for preventing said mandrel from entering said flange forming means, when a workpiece is positioned in said die, until a flange has been substantially fully formed on the workpiece.
- 7. Apparatus for providing a desired shape in a can body comprising
- a die member having
- an inner face upon which is formed
- a neck forming member closely adjacent at least one axial end of said die and of a diameter substantially the same as the outer diameter of a workpiece can body to be thus shaped,
- an expansion section adjacent said neck forming member and extending away from said at least one axial end of said die and toward the other axial end thereof, and
- a flange forming section immediately adjacent at least one axial end of said die, and
- means for exerting a substantially radially directed force against the interior of a can body positioned within said die to cause the can body to be formed against said die face.
- 8. Apparatus for providing a desired shape in a can body comprising
- a die member having
- an inner face including
- structure against which a can body may be forced for shaping thereof, and
- an elastomeric mandrel within said die member and substantially coaxial therewith,
- means for causing said mandrel to flow against a can body positioned within said die to force the can body against said die face structure, and
- means on said mandrel for preventing said mandrel from flowing behind an end of a can body positioned within said die, thereby preventing obstruction of the shaping of the end of the can body and damage to the mandrel.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein
- said preventing means on said mandrel comprises
- a peripheral groove therein having
- a first tapered section extending inwardly from the periphery of said mandrel,
- a second tapered section extending inwardly from the periphery of said mandrel, and
- a generally axially directed section extending between said first and second tapered sections.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein
- said generally axially directed section is of a diameter, relative to the mandrel axis, which is less than that of the periphery of the mandrel adjacent said groove.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein
- said elastomeric mandrel comprises
- an elongated member having
- a peripheral surface of a tapered, conical configuration.
