Claims
- 1. An apparatus for treating a solid particulate foodstuff in a container having an open end which comprises:
- (a) means for supporting the container;
- (b) a hollow extension piece;
- (c) means for temporarily engaging the extension piece with the container so that the interior of the extension piece communicates with the interior of the container and the extension piece and container cooperatively define a hollow assemblage;
- (d) means for introducing particles of the foodstuff into the assemblage so that the particles fill the container and at least partially fill the extension piece and so that there are interstices between the particles;
- (e) a closing member;
- (f) means for temporarily fitting the closing member to the assemblage after introduction of the foodstuff to form a closed assembly having an outlet for the escape of air;
- (g) means for purging steam through the interstices between the particles within the closed assembly until the foodstuff subsides into the container; and
- (h) means for separating the container, extension piece and closing member from each other after steam purging.
- 2. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the means for supporting the container includes a supporting table disposed beneath said extension piece, the apparatus further comprising means for positioning the container on the table so that the container is disposed beneath the extension piece with its open end facing upwardly.
- 3. An apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said closing member is disposed above said extension piece and said means for temporarily engaging the extension piece with the container includes means for raising the container so that it engages the extension piece to form the assemblage and said means for fitting the closing member to the extension piece includes means for lowering the closing member into contact with the extension piece to form the closed assembly.
- 4. An apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the means for raising the container includes means for raising the supporting table while the container is positioned thereon.
- 5. An apparatus according to claim 4, further comprising a platform having an aperture, the extension piece being disposed in the aperture in the platform.
- 6. An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said means for raising the supporting table is operative to disengage the extension piece from the platform after introduction of foodstuff.
- 7. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the means for purging steam through the interstices includes means for applying heat to the wall of the container and means for spinning the closed assembly about a vertical axis during application of the heat.
- 8. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein means are provided for conveying the container horizontally.
- 9. An apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising means for introducing a plurality of containers into the apparatus consecutively and removing the containers from the apparatus consecutively to give a continuous process.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for introducing foodstuff is operative to introduce particles of foodstuff into the container through said extension piece.
- 11. An apparatus according to claim 10, wherein the means for introducing foodstuff includes a filling table having an aperature and means for positioning the extension piece below the filling table in alignment with such aperture.
- 12. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the means for separating the container, extension piece and closing member from each other is the same as the means used for raising the container and lowering the closing member to form the closed assembly.
- 13. Apparatus for filling a series of open-topped containers with a particulate foodstuff and treating such foodstuff with steam comprising:
- (a) a horizontally extensive filling platform;
- (b) means for moving said platform horizontally;
- (c) a plurality of hollow extension pieces mounted to said platform for horizontal movement therewith and extending vertically therethrough;
- (d) a plurality of closing members;
- (e) means for supplying the containers to be filled in sequence;
- (f) means for engaging each container supplied by said container-supplying means with one of said extension pieces so that the interior of such extension piece is in communication with the interior of the container engaged therewith and maintaining such engagement;
- (g) means for introducing particles of foodstuff into each of said extension pieces while a container is engaged therewith so that the particles fill the container and at least partially fill the extension piece;
- (h) means for engaging one of said closing members with each extension piece after introduction of foodstuff thereinto and maintaining such engagement so that each such closing member, the extension piece engaged therewith and the container engaged with such extension piece cooperatively define a closed assembly;
- (i) means for purging steam through each such closed assembly to thereby treat the foodstuff contained therein until the foodstuff has subsided into the container;
- (j) means for disengaging each container and closing member from the associated extension piece after steam purging; and
- (k) means for removing each container from the apparatus after disengagement.
- 14. Apparatus as claimed in claim 13 in which said platform moving means is operative to rotate said platform about a vertical axis.
- 15. Apparatus as claimed in claim 14 in which said means for engaging each container includes a plurality of supporting tables disposed beneath said extension pieces, said supporting tables being equal in number to said extension pieces, means for moving said supporting tables vertically, and means for moving said supporting tables about said axis in synchronism with said platform so that each supporting table remains aligned with one of said extension pieces.
- 16. Apparatus as claimed in claim 15 in which said closing members are equal in number to said extension pieces, the apparatus including means for moving said closing members in synchronism with said platform about said axis so that each closing member remains aligned with one of said extension pieces.
- 17. Apparatus as claimed in claim 16 in which said steam purging means includes means for spinning each container relative to said platform and concomitantly applying heat to the wall of the container, said extension pieces and closing members being rotatable with respect to said platform.
- 18. An apparatus according to claim 17, wherein said means for introducing foodstuff includes a stationary filling table disposed above the filling platform, said table having an aperture extending through it, movement of said platform aligning each of said extension pieces with said aperture.
