Claims
- 1. A flapper valve for positioning within a cannula of a type for receiving an instrument through an instrument receiving passageway, said flapper valve comprising:
- a flapper portion;
- a flapper mounting portion having a ring shape for connecting to adjacent interior portion of a cannula; and
- an integrally formed hinge portion connecting said flapper mounting portion to said flapper portion for permitting said flapper portion to move to an open position when an instrument is positioned within an instrument receiving passageway and for biasing said flapper portion toward a closed position when an instrument is removed from said instrument receiving passageway, said hinge portion having a plurality of spaced apart straps extending between said flapper mounting portion and said flapper portion.
- 2. A flapper valve according to claim 1, wherein said flapper portion comprises:
- a generally planar portion; and
- a dome shaped portion connected thereto, and wherein said dome shaped portion extends into the instrument receiving passageway to seal same when said flapper portion is in the closed position.
- 3. A flapper valve according to claim 2, wherein said flapper portion comprises a soft plastic material, and wherein said dome shaped portion comprises a top surface comprising a hard material for preventing a sharp trocar from damaging the softer flapper portion during insertion of the trocar therepast.
- 4. A flapper valve according to claim 1, wherein said flapper valve comprises a monolithic molded form with said flapper portion formed at an angle to flapper mounting portion, thus biasing said flapper portion into a sealing relationship with an instrument passageway when in an assembled position within the cannula.
- 5. A flapper valve according to claim 1, further comprising a sealing washer carried by said flapper mounting portion for positioning between said flapper valve and a cannula cap enclosing said flapper valve within a cannula.
- 6. A flapper valve according to claim 5, wherein said sealing washer comprises a wedge shaped cross-section for displacing said flapper portion at an angle to said flapper mounting portion for biasing said flapper portion into a sealing relationship therewith, and thus with an instrument passageway when in an assembled position within a cannula.
- 7. A flapper valve according to claim 6, wherein said sealing washer comprises an annular cradle portion about a perimeter of its aperture, which cradle portion receives the flapper portion in a sealing engagement therein.
- 8. A flapper valve according to claim 1, wherein said flapper valve comprises a monolithic flexible plastic material.
- 9. A flapper valve according to claim 1, wherein said flapper mounting portion has a ring shape.
- 10. A flapper valve for positioning within a cannula of a type for receiving an instrument through an instrument receiving passageway, said flapper valve comprising:
- a flapper portion;
- a flapper mounting portion having a ring shape for connecting to adjacent interior portion of said cannula; and
- an integrally formed hinge portion connecting said flapper mounting portion to said flapper portion for permitting said flapper portion to move to an open position when an instrument is positioned within an instrument receiving passageway and for biasing said flapper portion toward a closed position when an instrument is removed from said instrument receiving passageway, wherein said flapper valve comprises a monolithic molded form with said flapper portion formed at an angle to flapper mounting portion, thus biasing said flapper portion into a sealing relationship with an instrument passageway when in an assembled position within a cannula.
- 11. A flapper valve according to claim 10, wherein said hinge portion comprises a plurality of spaced apart straps extending between said flapper mounting portion and said flapper portion.
- 12. A flapper valve according to claim 10, wherein said flapper portion comprises:
- a generally planar portion; and
- a dome shaped portion connected thereto, and wherein said dome shaped portion extends into the instrument receiving passageway to seal same when said flapper portion is in the closed position, and wherein said dome shaped portion further comprises a top surface of a hard material for preventing a sharp trocar from damaging the softer flapper portion during insertion of the trocar therepast.
- 13. A flapper valve according to claim 10, further comprising a sealing washer carried by said flapper mounting portion for positioning between said flapper valve and a cannula cap enclosing said flapper valve within a cannula.
- 14. A flapper valve according to claim 13, wherein said sealing washer comprises an annular cradle portion about a perimeter of its aperture, which cradle portion receives the flapper portion in a sealing engagement therein.
- 15. A flapper valve according to claim 10, wherein said flapper valve comprises a monolithic flexible plastic material.
- 16. A flapper valve according to claim 10, wherein said flapper mounting portion has a ring shape.
- 17. A flapper valve for positioning within a cannula of a type for receiving an instrument through an instrument receiving passageway, said flapper valve comprising:
- a flapper portion;
- a flapper mounting portion having a ring shape for connecting to adjacent interior portion of a cannula;
- an integrally formed hinge portion connecting said flapper mounting portion to said flapper portion for permitting said flapper portion to move to an open position when an instrument is positioned within an instrument receiving passageway and for biasing said flapper portion toward a closed position when an instrument is removed from said instrument receiving passageway; and
- a sealing washer carried by said flapper mounting portion for positioning between said flapper valve and a cannula cap enclosing said flapper valve within the cannula, wherein said sealing washer comprises a wedge shaped cross-section for displacing said flapper portion at an angle to said flapper mounting portion for biasing said flapper portion into a sealing relationship therewith, and thus with an instrument passageway when in an assembled position within a cannula.
- 18. A flapper valve according to claim 17, wherein said hinge portion comprises a plurality of spaced apart straps extending between said flapper mounting portion and said flapper portion.
- 19. A flapper valve according to claim 17, wherein said flapper portion comprises:
- a generally planar portion; and
- a dome shaped portion connected thereto, wherein said dome shaped portion extends into the instrument receiving passageway to seal same when said flapper portion is in the closed position, and wherein said dome shaped portion comprises a top surface comprising a hard material for preventing a sharp trocar from damaging the softer flapper portion during insertion of the trocar therepast.
- 20. A flapper valve according to claim 17, wherein said sealing washer comprises an annular cradle portion about a perimeter of its aperture, which cradle portion receives the flapper portion in a sealing engagement therein.
- 21. A flapper valve according to claim 17, wherein said flapper valve comprises a monolithic flexible plastic material.
- 22. A flapper valve according to claim 17, wherein said flapper mounting portion has a ring shape.
- 23. A surgical instrument assembly comprising:
- a cannula having a distal end and a proximal end;
- a cannula cap connected to the proximal end of said cannula, said cannula cap comprising a cap body having a bore therethrough defining an instrument receiving passageway; and
- a monolithic flapper valve positioned within the cannula proximal end and adjacent said cap body, said flapper valve comprising a flapper portion, a flapper mounting portion positioned adjacent said cap body, and an integrally formed hinge portion connecting said flapper mounting portion to said flapper portion for permitting said flapper portion to move to an open position when an instrument is positioned within the instrument receiving passageway and for biasing said flapper portion toward a closed position when an instrument is removed from said instrument receiving passageway, said hinge portion having a plurality of spaced apart straps extending between said flapper mounting portion and said flapper portion.
- 24. An assembly according to claim 23, wherein said flapper portion comprises:
- a generally planar portion; and
- a dome shaped portion connected thereto, and wherein said dome shaped portion extends into the instrument receiving passageway to seal same when said flapper portion is in the closed position.
- 25. An assembly according to claim 24, wherein said flapper portion comprises a soft plastic material, and wherein said dome shaped portion comprises a top surface comprising a hard material for preventing a sharp trocar from damaging the softer flapper portion during insertion of the trocar therepast.
- 26. An assembly according to claim 23, wherein said flapper valve comprises a monolithic molded form with said flapper portion formed at an angle to flapper mounting portion, thus biasing said flapper portion into a sealing relationship with the instrument passageway when in an assembled position within the cannula.
- 27. An assembly according to claim 23, further comprising a sealing washer carried by said flapper mounting portion and positioned between said flapper valve and cannula cap.
- 28. An assembly according to claim 27, wherein said sealing washer comprises a wedge shaped cross-section for displacing said flapper portion at an angle to said flapper mounting portion for biasing said flapper portion into a sealing relationship therewith, and thus with the instrument passageway when in an assembled position within the cannula.
- 29. An assembly according to claim 28, wherein said sealing washer comprises an annular cradle portion about a perimeter of its aperture, which cradle portion receives the flapper portion in a sealing engagement therein.
- 30. An instrument according to claim 23, wherein said cannula cap comprises an instrument seal portion having an opening therein for permitting a trocar to pass therethrough and into the instrument receiving passageway, said instrument seal portion sealably receiving instruments of varying diameters.
- 31. An instrument according to claim 23, wherein the proximal end of said cannula comprises a shoulder portion therein, which shoulder portion defines a valve seat for receiving said flapper portion.
- 32. An instrument according to claim 23, wherein said cannula and cannula cap have a generally cylindrical shape, and wherein said flapper mounting portion has a ring shape.
- 33. An instrument according to claim 23, further comprising a trocar for entry into and through said cannula, said trocar having a shaft including a handle end, an opposing tip end, and a intermediate portion therebetween having a diameter less than that at the tip end.
- 34. An instrument according to claim 23, wherein said cannula cap comprises alignment holes within a valve receiving end surface of said cannula cap, and wherein said flapper valve further comprises alignment pins extending therefrom and into the alignment holes.
- 35. A surgical instrument assembly comprising:
- a cannula having a distal end and a proximal end;
- a cannula cap connected to the proximal end of said cannula, said cannula cap comprising a cap body having a bore therethrough defining an instrument receiving passageway; and
- a monolithic flapper valve positioned within the cannula proximal end and adjacent said cap body, said flapper valve comprising a flapper portion, a flapper mounting portion positioned adjacent said cap body, and an integrally formed hinge portion connecting said flapper mounting portion to said flapper portion with said flapper portion formed at an angle to said flapper mounting portion for biasing said flapper portion into a sealing relationship with the instrument passageway when in an assembled position within the cannula, and for permitting said flapper portion to move to an open position when an instrument is placed within the instrument receiving passageway.
- 36. An assembly according to claim 35, wherein said hinge portion comprises a plurality of spaced apart straps extending between said flapper mounting portion and said flapper portion.
- 37. An assembly according to claim 35, wherein said flapper portion comprises:
- a generally planar portion; and
- a dome shaped portion connected thereto, and wherein said dome shaped portion extends into the instrument receiving passageway to seal same when said flapper portion is in the closed position, wherein said dome shaped portion comprises a top surface of a hard material for preventing a sharp trocar from damaging the softer 8 flapper portion during insertion of the trocar therepast.
- 38. An assembly according to claim 35, further comprising a sealing washer carried by said flapper mounting portion and positioned between said flapper valve and cannula cap.
- 39. An assembly according to claim 38, wherein said sealing washer comprises an annular cradle portion about a perimeter of its aperture, which cradle portion receives the flapper portion in a sealing engagement therein.
- 40. An instrument according to claim 38, wherein said cannula cap comprises an instrument seal portion having an opening therein for permitting a trocar to pass therethrough and into the instrument receiving passageway, said instrument seal portion sealably receiving instruments of varying diameters.
- 41. An instrument according to claim 38, wherein the proximal end of said cannula comprises a shoulder portion therein, which shoulder portion defines a valve seat for receiving said flapper portion.
- 42. An instrument according to claim 35, wherein said cannula and cannula cap have a generally cylindrical shape, and wherein said flapper mounting portion has a ring shape.
- 43. An instrument according to claim 35, further comprising a trocar for entry into and through said cannula, said trocar having a shaft including a handle end, an opposing tip end, and a intermediate portion therebetween having a diameter less than that at the tip end.
- 44. An instrument according to claim 35, wherein said cannula cap comprises alignment holes within a valve receiving end surface of said cannula cap, and wherein said flapper valve further comprises alignment pins extending therefrom and into the alignment holes.
- 45. A surgical instrument assembly comprising:
- a cannula having a distal end and a proximal end;
- a cannula cap connected to the proximal end of said cannula, said cannula cap comprising a cap body having a bore therethrough defining an instrument receiving passageway;
- a monolithic flapper valve positioned within the cannula proximal end and adjacent said cap body, said flapper valve comprising a flapper portion, a flapper mounting portion positioned adjacent said cap body, and an integrally formed hinge portion connecting said flapper mounting portion to said flapper portion for permitting said flapper portion to move to an open position when an instrument is placed within the instrument receiving passageway; and
- a sealing washer carried by said flapper mounting portion for positioning between said flapper valve and a cannula cap enclosing said flapper valve within the cannula, wherein said sealing washer comprises a wedge shaped cross-section for displacing said flapper portion at an angle to said flapper mounting portion for biasing said flapper portion into a sealing relationship therewith, and thus against the instrument passageway when in an assembled position within the cannula.
- 46. An assembly according to claim 45, wherein said hinge portion comprises a plurality of spaced apart straps extending between said flapper mounting portion and said flapper portion.
- 47. An assembly according to claim 45, wherein said flapper portion comprises:
- a generally planar portion; and
- a dome shaped, portion connected thereto, and wherein said dome shaped portion extends into the instrument receiving passageway to seal same when said flapper portion is in the closed position, wherein said dome shaped portion comprises a top surface of a hard material for preventing a sharp trocar from damaging the softer flapper portion during insertion of the trocar therepast.
- 48. An assembly according to claim 45, wherein said sealing washer comprises an annular cradle portion about a perimeter of its aperture, which cradle portion receives the flapper portion in a sealing engagement therein.
- 49. An instrument according to claim 45, wherein said cannula cap comprises an instrument seal portion having an opening therein for permitting a trocar to pass therethrough and into the instrument receiving passageway, said instrument seal portion sealably receiving instruments of varying diameters.
- 50. An instrument according to claim 45, wherein the proximal end of said cannula comprises a shoulder portion therein, which shoulder portion defines a valve seat for receiving said flapper portion.
- 51. An instrument according to claim 45, further comprising a trocar for entry into and through said cannula, said trocar having a shaft including a handle end, an opposing tip end, and a intermediate portion therebetween having a diameter less than that at the tip end.
- 52. An instrument according to claim 45, wherein said cannula cap comprises alignment holes within a valve receiving end surface of said cannula cap, and wherein said flapper valve further comprises alignment pins extending therefrom and into the alignment holes.
