Claims
- 1) A microfluidic device, comprising:
a channel having an inlet opening and a longitudinal section extending away from said inlet opening, with a portion of said longitudinal section having a diameter of a lesser dimension than that of said inlet opening; and fluid introduction means, wherein when a fluid plug is introduced at said inlet opening of said channel, said fluid plug is drawn into said channel such that said fluid plug is completely within said channel spaced apart from said inlet opening.
- 2) The device of claim 1, wherein said channel is comprised of a plurality of laminar sheets.
- 3) The device of claim 1, wherein said channel has a rectangular shape.
- 4) The device of claim 1, wherein said channel has a n e lliptical shape.
- 5) The device of claim 3, wherein said sheets are constructed from mylar.
- 6) The device of claim 3, wherein said sheets are constructed from plastic.
- 7) The device of claim 1, wherein said fluid plug consists of whole blood.
- 8) A microfluidic device, comprising:
a first channel having an inlet opening, an outlet, and a longitudinal section between said inlet opening and said outlet, with a portion of said longitudinal section having a diameter of a lesser dimension than that of said inlet opening; a second channel, extending away from said first channel; valve means, coupling said outlet of said first channel to said second channel; and fluid introduction means, wherein when a fluid is introduced at said inlet opening, said fluid is drawn into said first channel such that said fluid is completely within said first channel spaced apart from said inlet opening toward said valve means.
- 9) the device of claim 8, further comprising valve actuator means for controlling said valve means to selectively couple said first and second channels.
- 10) The device of claim 9, wherein when said valve actuator means is activated when said fluid is introduced at said inlet opening, said fluid enters said second channel from said first channel.
- 11) The device of claim 10, wherein fluid is contained within said second channel after said valve actuator means is deactivated.
- 12) The device of claim 8, wherein said fluid is whole blood.
- 13) The device of claim 8, wherein at least a portion of said first channel is cone-shaped.
- 14) The device of claim 9, wherein said valve actuator means may be actuated manually.
- 15) A method of moving a fluid in a microfluidic channel, comprising the steps of:
providing a channel having an input opening with a first diameter and having a second smaller diameter along its longitude spaced apart at a distance from said input opening; and contacting said input opening of said channel with a finite quantity of a fluid; wherein capillary forces within said channel draw said fluid into said channel such that the trailing edge of said fluid moves through said channel and is spaced away from said input opening.
- 16) The method of claim 15, wherein said fluid plug comprises whole blood.
