Claims
- 1. A capillary nib for use in an inscribing instrument, said nib being shaped from a bar of thermoplastic resin material which is formed by extruding the resin material in a molten state through a die having a large plurality of orifices disposed in a specified arrangement to thereby form a plurality of filaments of the resin material and causing the filaments to adhere longitudinally while the surfaces thereof are still substantially in the molten state, said bar having a transverse cross-sectional configuration comprising:
- an outer shell portion formed of mutually adhering filaments;
- a plurality of projections formed of mutually adhering filaments, said projections being integrally joined at respective bases thereof to said outer shell portion at equal angularly spaced intervals, said projections extending centripetally toward the axial center of the cross-section, at least a portion of said projections at equal angularly spaced intervals extending fully to said center and being integrally joined thereat; and
- voids, forming principal capillary ink passages, defined between said projections and said outer shell portion, each said passage having a substantially linear direction of extension, the width of each said passage, in a direction transverse to said linear direction of extension thereof, being substantially constant throughout the length of said passage.
- 2. A capillary nib as claimed in claim 1, wherein said voids extend continuously longitudinally throughout the length of the nib.
- 3. A capillary nib as claimed in claim 1, comprising, as viewed in cross-section, a total of eight said projections, of which four projections at equal angularly spaced intervals extend fully to said center and are integrally joined thereat, thereby to form a cross-shaped figure, and each limb of said cross-shaped figure has two lateral projections projecting from opposite lateral sides thereof.
- 4. A capillary nib as claimed in claim 1, comprising, as viewed in cross-section, a total of five said projections, all said projections extending fully centripetally to join a filament disposed longitudinally at said center, each said projection being of the shape of an isosceles triangle with the base thereof joined to said outer shell portion.
- 5. A capillary nib as claimed in claim 3, wherein the remaining four projections of said eight projections extend radially inwardly from those points of said outer shell intermediate between the points of connection thereof toward said cross-shaped figure respectively, and the width of each of said remaining four projection diminishes substantially stepwise toward said center.
- 6. A capillary nib as claimed in claim 5, wherein said lateral projections are disposed adjacent to said outer shell.
