Claims
- 1. A slider for a magnetic disk drive comprising:
a block of material which includes an air-bearing surface and a backside surface; and means for absorbing shock attached to the block of material.
- 2. The magnetic disk drive of claim 1 wherein the means for absorbing shock is positioned to prevent the corners or edges of the block of material from contacting a surface.
- 3. The magnetic disk drive of claim 1 wherein the block of material has recesses therein positioned near the corners of the block of material, the means for absorbing shock positioned in the recesses in the block of material.
- 4. The magnetic disk drive of claim 1 wherein the means for absorbing shock includes an elastomeric pad.
- 5. A head gimbal assembly for a disk drive comprising:
a load spring; and a slider attached to the load spring, said slider further comprising:
a block of material having corners and having a plurality of surfaces including an air-bearing surface, said slider having a recess therein; and a pad of shock absorbing material positioned within the recess.
- 6. The head gimbal assembly of claim 5 wherein the pad further comprise a cap of hard material.
- 7. The head gimbal assembly of claim 5 wherein the block of material has plurality of recesses therein and a plurality of pads of shock absorbing material positioned within at least some of the recesses.
- 8. The head gimbal assembly of claim 7 wherein the plurality of recesses are positioned to prevent the corners or edges of the block of material near the air-bearing surface from contacting another surface.
- 9. The head gimbal assembly of claim 7 wherein the plurality of recesses are positioned near the corners and edges of the block of material associated with the air-bearing surface of the slider.
- 10. The head gimbal assembly of claim 9 wherein the pads further comprise a cap of hard material.
- 11. The head gimbal assembly of claim 10 wherein the caps of hard material are positioned near the air-bearing surface of the slider.
- 12. The head gimbal assembly of claim 9 wherein the pads are comprised of an elastomeric polymer and wherein the pads are further comprised of a cap of diamond like material.
- 13. A slider for a disk drive comprising:
a block of material having corners and having a plurality of surfaces including an air-bearing surface, said slider having a recess therein; and a pad of shock absorbing material positioned within the recess.
- 14. The slider of claim 13 wherein the pad is positioned within the recess to prevent contact with the corners or edges of the block of material.
- 15. The slider of claim 13 wherein the block of material has plurality of recesses therein and a plurality of pads of shock absorbing material positioned within at least some of the recesses.
- 16. The slider of claim 15 wherein the pads are positioned within said plurality of recesses to prevent the corners or edges of the block of material near the air-bearing surface from contacting another surface.
- 17. The slider of claim 15 wherein the pads comprise:
a first shock absorbing material; and a second material harder than the shock absorbing material.
- 18. The slider of claim 15 wherein the pads comprise:
a first shock absorbing material; and a second material harder than the shock absorbing material, said pads positioned within the recesses so that the second material is positioned near the air-bearing surface.
- 19. The slider of claim 18 wherein the second material harder than the shock absorbing material is diamond like carbon.
