Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula ##STR214## wherein R.sup.8 is hydrogen and R.sup.1 is hydrogen, CH.sub.3 CH.sub.2 --, ##STR215## R.sup.1 and R.sup.8 taken together represent ##STR216## A is cyclopentylene, cyclohexylene or C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkylene optionally substituted by one or more C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups; and ##STR217## represents a radical selected from ##STR218## wherein X is O, S or NR in which R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or phenyl, said radical being optionally substituted on a carbon atom by one or more substituents independently selected from C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl substituted by hydroxy; amino, carboxy or halogen; C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylthio; amino; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylamino; di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)amino; halo; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoylamino; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoyloxy; carboxy; ##STR219## alkyl; hydroxy; amidino; guanidino, trifluoromethyl; phenyl; phenyl substituted by one, two or three amino, halo, hydroxyl, trifluoromethyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy groups; and heteroaryl or heteroaralkyl in which the hetero atom or atoms in the above-named heterocyclic moieties are selected from the group consisting of 1-4 oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur atoms and the alkyl moiety associated with said heteroaralkyl moiety has 1-6 carbon atoms; ##STR220## wherein X is O, S or NR in which R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or phenyl, said radical being optionally substituted on a carbon atom by one or more substituents independently selected from C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl substituted by hydroxy; amino, carboxy or halogen; C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylthio; amino; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylamino; di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)amino; halo; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoylamino; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoyloxy; carboxy; ##STR221## alkyl; hydroxy; amidino; guanidino, trifluoromethyl; phenyl; phenyl substituted by one, two or three amino, halo, hydroxyl, trifluoromethyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy groups; and heteroaryl or heteroaralkyl in which the hetero atom or atoms in the above-named heterocyclic moieties are selected from the group consisting of 1-4 oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur atoms and the alkyl moiety associated with said heteroaralkyl moiety has 1-6 carbon atoms; and ##STR222## wherein R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or phenyl, said radical being optionally substituted on the carbon atom by a substituent selected from C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl substituted by hydroxy, amino, carboxy or halogen; C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylthio; amino; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylamino; di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)amino; halo; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoylamino; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoyloxy; carboxy; ##STR223## alkyl; hydroxy; amidino; guanidino; trifluoromethyl; phenyl; phenyl substituted by one, two or three amino, halo, hydroxyl, trifluoromethyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy groups; and heteroaryl or heteroaralkyl in which the hetero atom or atoms in the above-named heterocyclic moieties are selected from the group consisting of 1-4 oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur atoms and the alkyl moiety associated with said heteroaralkyl moiety has 1-6 carbon atoms, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof.
- 2. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.1 is ##STR224##
- 3. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.1 is ##STR225## and the absolute configuration is 5R, 6S, 8R.
- 4. A compound according to claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein A is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, ##STR226##
- 5. A compound of the formula ##STR227## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof.
