Claims
- 1. A compound of formula (I): ##STR23## in which: A represents a fully saturated heterocyclic group having from 4 to 6 ring atoms, of which one is a nitrogen atom and the remainder are carbon atoms, said nitrogen atom having on its remaining valence a group or atom R.sup.4, wherein:
- R.sup.4 represents: a hydrogen atom; an alkenyl group having from 2 to 5 carbon atoms; an alkynyl group having from 2 to 5 carbon atoms; an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; a substituted alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a), defined below; or a group of formula --C(.dbd.NH)R.sup.5, wherein R.sup.5 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms;
- R.sup.1 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group;
- R.sup.3 represents a hydrogen atom or a negative ionic charge or forms an ester;
- R.sup.2 and Q, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, represent a group of formula (II)': ##STR24## wherein: R.sup.6 represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a), defined below;
- R.sup.7 represents an alkenyl group having from 2 to 5 carbon atoms, an alkynyl group having from 2 to 5 carbon atoms, an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b), defined below;
- and the carbon atoms of said group of formula (II)' are unsubstituted or they are substituted by at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and oxygen atoms (to form an oxo group);
- substituents (a):
- hydroxy groups, carboxy groups, cyano groups, sulfamoyl groups, sulfo groups, halogen atoms, and groups of formula --NR.sup.a R.sup.b or --CONR.sup.a R.sup.b, where R.sup.a and R.sup.b are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms and alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
- substituents (b):
- hydroxy groups; carboxy groups; groups of formula --NR.sup.a R.sup.b, where R.sup.a and R.sup.b are as defined above; groups of formula --CONR.sup.c R.sup.d or --OCONR.sup.c R.sup.d, where R.sup.c and R.sup.d are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms, alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and substituted alkyl groups which have from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which have at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (d) defined below; cyano groups; sulfamoyl groups; ureido groups; sulfo groups; halogen atoms; alkoxy groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; alkoxycarbonyl groups having from 2 to 5 carbon atoms; alkanoyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; alkanoylamino groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; alkanoyloxy groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; alkylthio groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; alkylsulfinyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and alkylsulfonyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
- substituents (d):
- hydroxy groups, carboxy groups and groups of formula --CONR.sup.a R.sup.b or --OCONR.sup.a R.sup.b, where R.sup.a and R.sup.b are as defined above;
- or salts thereof and, where R.sup.3 represents a hydrogen atom or an ester, the compound also includes an anion for the N.sup.+ group of formula II provided by an acid selected from the group consisting of hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, hydrobromic acid, hydroiodic acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, perchloric acid, phosphoric acid, oxalic acid, tartaric acid, maleic acid, succinic acid, acetic acid, benzoic acid, mandelic acid, ascorbic acid, lactic acid, gluconic acid, malic acid, citric acid, fluorosulfonic acid, methanesulfonic acid, trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, ethanesulfonic acid, benzenesulfonic acid, and p-toluenesulfonic acid; and said ester is formed when R.sup.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl in which the aromatic part has 6-14 carbon atoms and the substituents are selected from the group consisting of substituents (e) below; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 halogenated alkenyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 halogenated alkyl; substituted silylalkyl wherein the alkyl group has 1-6 carbon atoms and the silyl group is substituted 1-3 times with C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or phenyl which are unsubstituted or substituted with at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituent (e); unsubstituted phenacyl; phenacyl substituted with at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituent (e); alkoxymethyl where the alkoxy has 1 to 6 carbon atoms and is unsubstituted or substituted by a single unsubstituted alkoxy group; aliphatic acyloxymethyl wherein the acyl group is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkanoyl; higher aliphatic acyloxyalkyl wherein the acyl group is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkanoyl and the alkyl is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl; cycloalkyl-substituted aliphatic acyloxyalkyl wherein the acyl is C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkanoyl, the cycloalkyl is C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl, and the alkyl is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; alkoxycarbonyloxyalkyl wherein the alkoxy is C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkoxy and the alkyl is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; cycloalkylcarbonyloxyalkyl and cycloalkyloxycarbonyloxyalkyl wherein the cycloalkyl is C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 cycloalkyl and the alkyl is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl;
- cycloalkylalkoxycarbonyloxyalkyl, wherein the alkoxy has a single C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 cycloalkyl substituent which is mono or polycyclic; (5-alkyl or 5-phenyl-2-oxo-1,3-dioxolen-4-yl) alkyl in which each alkyl has 1 to 6 carbon atoms; phthalidyl; indanyl; or 2-oxo-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1,3-benzodioxolen-4-yl; and
- substituents (e) are:
- hydroxy groups; carboxy groups; groups of formula --NR.sup.a R.sup.b, where R.sup.a and R.sup.b are as defined above; groups of formula --CONR.sup.c R.sup.d or --OCONR.sup.c R.sup.d, where R.sup.c and R.sup.d are as defined above; cyano groups; sulfamoyl groups; ureido groups; sulfo groups; halogen atoms; alkenyl groups having from 2 to 5 carbon atoms; alkoxy groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; alkoxycarbonyl groups having from 2 to 5 carbon atoms; alkanoyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; alkanoylamino groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; alkanoyloxy groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; alkylthio groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; alkylsulfinyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkylsulfonyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
- nitro groups; alkyl groups having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, halogenated alkyl groups having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; or alkylenedioxy groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms.
- 2. The compound of claim 1, wherein:
- A represents a fully saturated heterocyclic group having from 4 to 6 ring atoms, of which one is a nitrogen atom and the remainder are carbon atoms, said nitrogen atom having on its remaining valence a group or atom R.sup.4, wherein:
- R.sup.4 represents: a hydrogen atom; an alkenyl group having 3 or 4 carbon atoms; an alkynyl group having 3 or 4 carbon atoms; an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.i), defined below; or a group of formula --C(.dbd.NH)R.sup.5, wherein R.sup.5 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
- substituents (a.sup.i):
- hydroxy groups, carboxy groups, carbamoyl groups, cyano groups, sulfamoyl groups, sulfo groups, halogen atoms, and groups of formula --NR.sup.a' R.sup.b', where R.sup.a' and R.sup.b' are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms and alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms.
- 3. The compound of claim 1, wherein R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
- 4. The compound of claim 1, wherein:
- R.sup.6 represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.i), defined below; and
- R.sup.7 represents: an alkenyl group having 3 or 4 carbon atoms; an alkynyl group having 3 or 4 carbon atoms; an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.i), defined below;
- and the carbon atoms of said group of formula (II)' are unsubstituted or they are substituted by at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and oxygen atoms;
- substituents (a.sup.i):
- hydroxy groups, carboxy groups, carbamoyl groups, cyano groups, sulfamoyl groups, sulfo groups, halogen atoms, and groups of formula --NR.sup.a' R.sup.b', where R.sup.a' and R.sup.b' are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms and alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms;
- substituents (b.sup.i):

- 5. The compound of claim 1, wherein:
- A represents a fully saturated heterocyclic group having from 4 to 6 ring atoms, of which one is a nitrogen atom and the remainder are carbon atoms, said nitrogen atom having on its remaining valence a group or atom R.sup.4, wherein:
- R.sup.4 represents: a hydrogen atom; an alkenyl group having 3 or 4 carbon atoms; an alkynyl group having 3 or 4 carbon atoms; an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; a substituted alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.i), defined below; or a group of formula --C(.dbd.NH)R.sup.5, wherein R.sup.5 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
- R.sup.6 represents: an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; or a substituted alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.i), defined below; and
- R.sup.7 represents: an alkenyl group having 3 or 4 carbon atoms; an alkynyl group having 3 or 4 carbon atoms; an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; or a substituted alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.i), defined below;

- 6. The compound of claim 1, wherein:
- A represents a fully saturated heterocyclic group having from 4 to 6 ring atoms, of which one is a nitrogen atom and the remainder are carbon atoms, said nitrogen atom having on its remaining valence a group or atom R.sup.4, wherein:
- R.sup.4 represents: a hydrogen atom; an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.ii), defined below; or a group of formula --C(.dbd.NH)R.sup.5, wherein R.sup.5 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
- substituents (a.sup.ii):
- hydroxy groups, carboxy groups, carbamoyl groups, cyano groups, halogen atoms, and groups of formula --NR.sup.a' R.sup.b', where R.sup.a' and R.sup.b' are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms and alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms.
- 7. The compound of claim 1, wherein:
- R.sup.6 represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (a.sup.iii), defined below; and
- R.sup.7 represents: an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.ii), defined below;
- and the carbon atoms of said group of formula (II)' are unsubstituted or they are substituted by at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and oxygen atoms;
- substituents (a.sup.iii):
- hydroxy groups, carboxy groups, carbamoyl groups, halogen atoms, and amino groups;
- substituents (b.sup.ii):

- 8. The compound of claim 1, wherein A represents a fully saturated heterocyclic group having 5 ring atoms, of which one is a nitrogen atom and the remainder are carbon atoms, said nitrogen atom having on its remaining valence a group or atom R.sup.4, wherein:
- R.sup.4 represents: a hydrogen atom; a methyl group; an ethyl group; or a substituted methyl or ethyl group which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy groups, carbamoyl groups and halogen atoms.
- 9. The compound of claim 1, wherein:
- R.sup.6 represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy groups, carboxy groups, carbamoyl groups, cyano groups, halogen atoms and amino groups; and
- R.sup.7 represents: an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.iii), defined below;
- and the carbon atoms of said group of formula (II)' are unsubstituted or they are substituted by at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and oxygen atoms;
- substituents (b.sup.iii):
- hydroxy groups; carboxy groups; groups of formula --NR.sup.e R.sup.f, where R.sup.e and R.sup.f are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms, methyl groups and ethyl groups; groups of formula --CONR.sup.g R.sup.h, where R.sup.g and R.sup.h are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms, alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and substituted alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, carboxy, carbamoyl and carbamoyloxy groups; groups of formula --OCONR.sup.i R.sup.j, where R.sup.i and R.sup.j are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms and alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; cyano groups; sulfamoyl groups; ureido groups; sulfo groups; halogen atoms; alkoxy groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; alkoxycarbonyl groups having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; alkanoyl groups having 2 or 3 carbon atoms; alkanoylamino groups having 2 or 3 carbon atoms; alkanoyloxy groups having 2 or 3 carbon atoms; alkylthio groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; alkylsulfinyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and alkylsulfonyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms.

The compound of claim 9, wherein said substituents (b.sup.iii) are selected from the group consisting of hydroxy groups; carboxy groups; groups of formula --NR.sup.e R.sup.f, where R.sup.e and R.sup.f are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms, methyl groups and ethyl groups; groups of formula --CONR.sup.g R.sup.h, where R.sup.g and R.sup.h are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms, alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and substituted alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, carboxy and carbamoyl groups; groups of formula --OCONR.sup.i R.sup.j, where R.sup.i and R.sup.j are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms and alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; cyano groups; sulfamoyl groups; ureido groups; sulfo groups; halogen atoms; alkoxy groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; alkoxycarbonyl groups having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; alkanoyl groups having 2 or 3 carbon atoms; alkanoylamino groups having 2 or 3 carbon atoms; alkanoyloxy groups having 2 or 3 carbon atoms; alkylthio groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; alkylsulfinyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and alkylsulfonyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms.
- 11. The compound of claim 1, wherein A represents a fully saturated heterocyclic group having 5 ring atoms, of which one is a nitrogen atom and the remainder are carbon atoms, said nitrogen atom having on its remaining valence a group or atom R.sup.4, wherein:
- R.sup.4 represents: a hydrogen atom; a methyl group; an ethyl group; or a substituted methyl or ethyl group which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy groups, carbamoyl groups and halogen atoms;
- R.sup.6 represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy groups, carboxy groups, carbamoyl groups, cyano groups, halogen atoms and amino groups; and
- R.sup.7 represents: an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.iii), defined below;
- and the carbon atoms of said group of formula (II)' are unsubstituted or they are substituted by at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and oxygen atoms;
- substituents (b.sup.iii):
- hydroxy groups; carboxy groups; groups of formula --NR.sup.e R.sup.f, where R.sup.e and R.sup.f are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms, methyl groups and ethyl groups; groups of formula --CONR.sup.g R.sup.h, where R.sup.g and R.sup.h are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms, alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and substituted alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, carboxy, carbamoyl and carbamoyloxy groups; groups of formula --OCONR.sup.i R.sup.j, where R.sup.i and R.sup.j are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms and alkyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; cyano groups; sulfamoyl groups; ureido groups; sulfo groups; halogen atoms; alkoxy groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; alkoxycarbonyl groups having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; alkanoyl groups having 2 or 3 carbon atoms; alkanoylamino groups having 2 or 3 carbon atoms; alkanoyloxy groups having 2 or 3 carbon atoms; alkylthio groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; alkylsulfinyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and alkylsulfonyl groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms.

A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment or prophylaxis in patient in need thereof of bacterial infections, which composition comprises an effective amount of an antibacterial agent in admixture with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or diluent, wherein the antibacterial agent is selected from the group consisting of compounds of formula (I) or pharmaceutically acceptable salts or esters thereof, as defined in claim 1.
- 24. The composition of claim 23, wherein A represents a fully saturated heterocyclic group having 5 ring atoms, of which one is a nitrogen atom and the remainder are carbon atoms, said nitrogen atom having on its remaining valence a group or atom R.sup.4, wherein:
- R.sup.4 represents: a hydrogen atom; a methyl group; an ethyl group; or a substituted methyl or ethyl group which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy groups, carbamoyl groups and halogen atoms.
- 25. The composition of claim 23, wherein
- R.sup.6 represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy groups, carboxy groups, carbamoyl groups, cyano groups, halogen atoms and amino groups; and
- R.sup.7 represents: an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.iii), defined below;
- and the carbon atoms of said group of formula (II) are unsubstituted or they are substituted by at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and oxygen atoms;

- 29. The composition of claim 23, wherein said antibacterial agent is selected from the group consisting of:
- 2-[2-(4,4-dimethyl-1-homopiperaziniocarbonyl)pyrrolidin-4-ylthio]-6-(1-hydroxyethyl)-1-methyl-1-carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylate;
- 2-{2-[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methyl-1-homopiperaziniocarbonyl]pyrrolidin-4-ylthio}-6-(1-hydroxyethyl)-1-methyl-1-carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylate;
- 2-[2-(4-carbamoylmethyl-4-methyl-1-homopiperaziniocarbonyl)pyrrolidin-4-ylthio]-6-(1-hydroxyethyl)-1-methyl-1-carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylate;
- 2-[2-(4-carboxymethyl-4-methyl-1-homopiperaziniocarbonyl)pyrrolidin-4-ylthio]-6-(1-hydroxyethyl)-1-methyl-1-carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylate; and

A method for the treatment or prophylaxis in patient in need thereof of bacterial infections in an animal, which method comprises administering to said animal an effective amount of an antibacterial agent in admixture with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or diluent, wherein the antibacterial agent is selected from the group consisting of compounds of formula (I) or pharmaceutically acceptable salts or esters thereof, as defined in claim 1.
- 31. The method of claim 30, wherein A represents a fully saturated heterocyclic group having 5 ring atoms, of which one is a nitrogen atom and the remainder are carbon atoms, said nitrogen atom having on its remaining valence a group or atom R.sup.4, wherein:
- R.sup.4 represents: a hydrogen atom; a methyl group; an ethyl group; or a substituted methyl or ethyl group which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy groups, carbamoyl groups and halogen atoms.
- 32. The method of claim 30, wherein
- R.sup.6 represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy groups, carboxy groups, carbamoyl groups, cyano groups, halogen atoms and amino groups; and
- R.sup.7 represents: an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; or a substituted alkyl group which has from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and which has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of substituents (b.sup.iii), defined below;
- and the carbon atoms of said group of formula (II)' are unsubstituted or they are substituted by at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and oxygen atoms;

- 36. The composition of claim 23 wherein the antibacterial agent is (1R,5S,6S)-2-[(2S,4S)-2-(4-carboxymethyl-4-methyl-1-homopiperaziniocarbonyl)pyrrolidin-4-ylthio]-6-[(1R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-1-methyl-1-cabapen-2-em-3-carboxylate.
- 37. The composition of claim 23 wherein the antibacterial agent is (1R,5S,6S)-2-{(2S,4S)-2-[4-(carbamoylmethyl)-4-methyl-1-homopiperaziniocarbonyl]pyrrolidin-4-ylthio}-6-[(1R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-1-methyl-1-carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylate.
- 38. The method of claim 30 wherein the antibacterial agent is (1R,5S,6S)-2-[(2S,4S)-2-(4-carboxymethyl-4-methyl-1-homopiperaziniocarbonyl)pyrrolidin-4-ylthio]-6-[(1R))-1-hydroxyethyl]-1-methyl-1-carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylate.
- 39. The method of claim 30 wherein the antibacterial agent is (1R,5S,6S)-2-{(2S,4S)-2-[4-(carbamoylmethyl)-4-methyl-1-homopiperaziniocarbonyl]-pyrrolidin-4-ylthio}-6-[(1R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-1-methyl-1-carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylate.
- 40. The compound of claim 1 wherein
- A represents a fully saturated heterocyclic group having 5 ring atoms, of which one is a nitrogen atom and the remainder are carbon atoms, said nitrogen atom having on its remaining valence a group or atom R.sup.4 ;

- 44. The compound of claim 1 wherein R.sup.3 is a benzyl, benzhydryl, 4-nitrobenzyl, 4-methoxybenzyl, allyl, 2,2,2-trichloroethyl, 2,2,2-tribromoethyl, 2-trimethylsilylethyl, acetoxymethyl, pivaloyloxymethyl or 1-ethoxycarbonyloxyethyl group.
- 45. The compound of claim 1 wherein R.sup.3 is alkyl, aralkyl or aliphatic acyloxymethyl.
