A process for the preparation of an enzyme-containing granulate suitable for use in an animal feed, the process comprising processing an enzyme, a solid carrier comprising at least about 15% (w/w) of an edible carbohydrate polymer and water in appropriate relative amounts to obtain enzyme-containing granules, and subsequently drying the granules.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the water and enzyme are provided as an enzyme-containing aqueous liquid.
- 3. A process according to claim 2 wherein the liquid is a filtrate derived from a fermentation process resulting in production of the enzyme.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein the process comprises:
(a) mixing an aqueous liquid containing the enzyme with the solid carrier; (b) mechanically processing the mixture obtained in (a) to obtain enzyme-containing granules; and (c) drying the enzyme-containing granules obtained in (b).
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein the processing is mechanical and comprises a method selected from the group consisting of extrusion, pelleting, high-shear granulation, expansion, and fluid bed agglomeration.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 wherein an enzyme-containing aqueous liquid and the solid carrier are mixed, and the resulting mixture is kneaded before granulation.
- 7. A process according to claim 1 wherein the processing is extrusion performed: (a) at low pressure; (b) in a basket- or dome-extruder; or (c) by both (a) and (b).
- 8. A process according to claim 1 wherein the granules obtained are spheronised prior to drying.
- 9. An enzyme-containing granulate produced by a process according to claim 1.
- 10. A granulate comprising dried granules formed from an enzyme and a solid carrier which comprises at least about 15% (w/w) of an edible carbohydrate polymer.
- 11. A granulate according to claim 9 wherein the granules comprise at least one divalent cation.
- 12. A granulate according to claim 9 wherein the granules comprise one or more hydrophobic, gel-forming or water insoluble compound(s).
- 13. A granulate according to claim 12 wherein the hydrophobic, gel-forming or water insoluble compound comprises a component selected from the group consisting of cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and an edible oil.
- 14. A granulate according to claim 13 wherein: (a) the derivatised cellulose is selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl-propyl-methyl-cellulose, carboxy-methyl-cellulose and hydroxyl-ethyl-cellulose; (b) the edible oil is soy oil or canola oil; or (c) the derivatised cellulose is selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl-propyl-methyl-cellulose, carboxy-methyl cellulose and hydroxyl-ethyl-cellulose, and the edible oil is soy oil or canola oil.
- 15. A granulate according to claim 9 wherein the enzyme is selected from the group consisting of a phytase, endo-xylanase, and a β-glucanase.
- 16. A process for the preparation of an animal feed, or a premix or precursor to an animal feed, the process comprising mixing a granulate according to claim 9 with one or more animal feed substance(s) or ingredient(s).
- 17. A process according to claim 16 wherein the mixture of feed substance(s) and granulate is sterilized or treated with steam, is pelletised, and optionally is dried.
- 18. A composition comprising a granulate according to claim 9.
- 19. A composition according to claim 18 which is an edible feed composition.
- 20. A composition according to claim 18 which is an animal feed.
- 21. A composition which comprises pellets of one or more feed substance(s) or ingredient(s) mixed with a granulate according to claim 9.
- 22. A composition according to claim 21 wherein the ratio of granulate: feed substance(s) or ingredients is at least about 1 g:1 kilogram (such as at least about 100 ppm)
- 23. A composition which is an animal feed, or a premix or precursor to an animal feed, prepared by a process according to claim 16.
- 24. A process for promoting the growth of an animal, the process comprising feeding an animal with a diet that comprises a granulate according to claim 9, or a composition comprising a granulate according to claim 9.
- 25. A process for promoting the growth of an animal, wherein said process comprises feeding said animal with a granulate according to claim 9 in, or as a component of, an animal feed, or in an animal diet.
- 26. A method for improving the pelleting stability of an enzyme, wherein said method comprises formulating said phytase in a composition comprising at least 15% (w/w) of an edible carbohydrate polymer as a carrier for said enzyme.
- 27. A process for the preparation of an enzyme-containing granulate, wherein an enzyme-containing liquid and a solid carrier comprising at least about 15% (w/w) starch are mechanically processed to obtain enzyme-containing granules which are subsequently dried.
