Claims
- 1. A non-woven weld blanket, comprising a needle punched webbing of pre-oxidized polyacrylonitrile fibers.
- 2. The non-woven weld blanket of claim 1, wherein said pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers are needle punched to a thickness of at least 0.100 inches.
- 3. The non-woven weld blanket of claim 1, wherein said pre-cursor carbon fibers are needle punched to a weight in the range of 12-16 ounces per square yard.
- 4. The non-woven weld blanket as claimed in claim 1, further being non-plush.
- 5. The non-woven weld blanket as claimed in claim 1, further adapted to allow an adhesive tape to be applied thereto and removed therefrom.
- 6. A non-woven, unblended weld blanket, comprising a needle punched and non-plush webbing of pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers, wherein said pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers are needle punched to a thickness of at least 0.100 inches and at a weight in the range of 12-16 ounces per square yard.
- 7. A process of making a non-woven weld blanket, comprising:
needling a plurality of pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers such that each of said pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers are mechanically moved into the X, Y, and Z-direction and intermingled.
- 8. The process of claim 7, wherein said pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers are needle punched to a thickness of at least 0.100 inches.
- 9. The process of claim 7, wherein said pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers are needle punched to a weight in the range of 12-16 ounces per square yard.
- 10. The process of claim 7, further comprising the step of utilizing a prototyping device to produce a sample swatch of said non-woven blanket.
- 11. The process of claim 10, wherein said sample swatch is used to determine an optimum density for said non-woven blanket.
- 12. A process for making a non-woven, weld blanket fabric, comprising:
converting a plurality of pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers into a webbing; crosslapping said webbing, thereby forming a batt of said pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers; and, locking several of said batts together to form said fabric.
- 13. The process of claim 12, wherein for the step of locking several of said batts together, a mechanical needling action intermingles and simultaneously compacts said plurality of pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers of each said batt.
- 14. The process of claim 13, wherein said pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers of each said batt are intermingled and simultaneously compacted to a thickness of at least 0.100 inches.
- 15. The process of claim 13, wherein said pre-oxidized, polyacrylonitrile fibers of each said batt are intermingled and simultaneously compacted to form said fabric at a weight in the range of 12-16 ounces per square yard.
