Claims
- 1. A thermally sprayed metal coating coated on a substrate and formed by depositable carbon coated metal powder, said carbon coated metal powder having a composition, comprising:
- an oxygen containing ferrous alloy metal powder, having an initial oxygen content;
- carbon powder adhered to said oxygen containing ferrous alloy metal powder, said oxygen containing ferrous alloy metal powder being inherently coated with said carbon powder to form a carbon powder coated metal powder having an oxygen content, and said carbon powder being present in the range from about 0.1% to about 2.0% by weight of said carbon powder coated metal powder; and
- said carbon powder coated metal powder, after being thermally sprayed onto said substrate and after being formed into a thermally sprayed and unannealed metal coating having a final oxygen content and said final oxygen content is at least 20% by weight less than said initial oxygen content.
- 2. A thermally sprayed metal coating as set forth in claim 1, wherein said oxygen containing metal powder has a particle size in the range of from about 10 .mu.m to about 300 .mu.m.
- 3. A thermally sprayed metal coating as set forth in claim 2, wherein said carbon powder coated metal powder has a particle size in the range of from about 50 .mu.m to about 300 .mu.m.
- 4. A thermally sprayed metal coating as set forth in claim 3, wherein said carbon powder coated metal powder has a particle size in the range of from about 100 .mu.m to about 200 .mu.m.
- 5. A thermally sprayed metal coating as set forth in claim 1, wherein said carbon powder has a particle size in the range of from about 0.2 .mu.m to about 2.0 .mu.m.
- 6. A thermally sprayed metal coating as set forth in claim 5, wherein said carbon powder coated metal powder has a composition, including, by weight percent, about 99.5% metal powder and about 0.5% adhered carbon powder, and said oxygen containing metal powder including about 0.05% elemental carbon, about 0.015% sulphur! sulfur, about 0.11% oxygen, less than about 0.001% nitrogen, about 0.006% phosphorous, about 0.005% silicon, about 0.17% manganese, about 0.09% copper, about 1.78% nickel, about 0.54% molybdenum, about 0.03% chromium, and balance essentially iron.
