Claims
- 1. A composition comprising: water; and dispersed in said water nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction, at a temperature in the range of about 30.degree. to the decomposition temperature of one or more of the reaction components, of (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating ageant with (B) at least one alkanol tertiary monoamine, said acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms and said monoamine (B) having one hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms, said water being provided in an effective amount to disperse said derivative in said water.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR5## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula: ##STR6## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 4. The composition of claim 3 wherein said monoamine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the equivalent ratio of acylating agent (A) to monoamine (B) used in the reaction is in the range of about 1:0.5 to about 1:3.0.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the equivalent ratio of acylating agent (A) to monoamine (B) in the reaction is in the range of about 1:1 to about 1:2.5.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 8. The composition system of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 9. The composition of claim 2 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 10. The composition of claim 2 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 11. A water-based system comprising the composition of any one of claims 2-5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 1 and at least one normally water-insoluble, oil-soluble anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent, said derivative being provided in an effective amount to disperse said agent in said system, said agent being provided in an effective amount to impart anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing properties to said system.
- 12. A system comprising the composition of any one of claims 2-5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 1, said system comprising about 40% to about 70% water, and a mixture, said mixture comprising: about 40% to about 70% of said derivative, and about 10% to about 40% of a normally water-insoluble, oil-soluble anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent.
- 13. A nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction of a mixture comprising (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent, said acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms, (B) at least one alkanol tertiary monoamine, said monoamine having one hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms and (c) at least one supplemental carboxylic acylating agent in addition to and different from the acylating agent (A).
- 14. The derivative of claim 13 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR7## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 15. The derivative of claim 13 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula ##STR8## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 16. The derivative of claim 13 wherein said amine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 17. The derivative of claim 13 wherein the equivalent ratio of components (A) and (C) to component (B) used in the reaction is in the range of about 0.5 to about 3 equivalents of component (B) per equivalent of components (A) and (C).
- 18. The derivative of claim 14 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or alkenyl group.
- 19. The derivative of claim 14 wherein the total amount of agents (A) and (C) is at least 50 mole percent agent (A).
- 20. The derivative of claim 13 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or alkenyl group.
- 21. The derivative of claim 13 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is poly(isobutene).
- 22. The derivative of claim 13 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is a fatty acid of 10 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 23. The derivative of claim 13 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is a low molecular weight alkyl or alkenyl succinic acid.
- 24. The derivative of claim 13 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is tetrapropenyl succinic anhydride.
- 25. A nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction of a mixture comprising (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent, said acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms, (B) at least one alkanol tertiary monoamine, said monoamine having one hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms and (D) at least one supplemental alkanol amine in addition to the alkanol tertiary monoamine (B).
- 26. The derivative of claim 25 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR9## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 27. The derivative of claim 25 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula ##STR10## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 28. The derivative of claim 27 wherein said monoamine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 29. The derivative of claim 25 wherein the equivalent ratio of component (A) to the amount of (B) and (D) combined is in the range of about 0.5 to about 3 equivalents of components (B) and (D) per equivalent of component (A).
- 30. The derivative of claim 25 wherein the equivalent ratio of acylating agent (A) to the amount of (B) and (D) combined is in the range of about 1:1 to about 1:2.5.
- 31. The derivative of claim 25 wherein at least 50 mole percent of the total of components (B) and (D) is component (B).
- 32. The derivative of claim 25 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 33. The derivative of claim 25 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 34. The derivative of claim 26 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 35. The derivative of claim 26 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 36. The derivative of claim 25 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) has up to about 26 carbon atoms.
- 37. The derivative of claim 25 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) is a primary, secondary or tertiary alkanol amine.
- 38. The derivative of claim 25 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) has the formula
- R.sub.1 R.sub.2 N--R.sub.3 --OH
- wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxy alkyl and hydroxy alkenyl and R.sub.3 is alkylene.
- 39. The derivative of claim 25 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) is ethanolamine.
- 40. A nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction of a mixture comprising (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms, (B) at least one alkanol tertiary monoamine, said monoamine having one hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms, (C) at least one supplemental carboxylic acylating agent in addition to and different from the acylating agent (A), and (D) at least one supplemental alkanol amine in addition to and different from the alkanol tertiary monoamine (B).
- 41. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR11## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 42. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula ##STR12## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 43. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said amine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 44. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or alkenyl group.
- 45. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is poly(isobutene).
- 46. The derivative of claim 41 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or alkenyl group.
- 47. The derivative of claim 41 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is poly(isobutene).
- 48. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is a fatty acid of 10 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 49. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is a low molecular weight alkyl or alkenyl succinic acid.
- 50. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is tetrapropenyl succinic anhydride.
- 51. The derivative of claim 40 wherein the equivalent ratio of components (A) and (C) to components (B) and (D) used in the reaction is in the range of about 0.5 to about 3 equivalents of components (B) and (D) per equivalent of components (A) and (C).
- 52. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) has up to about 26 carbon atoms.
- 53. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) is a primary, secondary or tertiary alkanol amine.
- 54. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) has the formula
- R.sub.1 R.sub.2 N--R.sub.3 --OH
- wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxy alkyl and hydroxy alkenyl and R.sub.3 is alkylene.
- 55. The derivative of claim 40 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) is ethanolamine.
- 56. A water-based system comprising (a) at least one normally water-insoluble, oil soluble anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent, and (b) an effective amount of a nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative as claimed in any one of claims 14-22, 25-28, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 48-41, 21-53 or 54-47 to disperse component (a) in said system.
- 57. A water-based system comprising: about 40 to about 70% of water; from 0 up to about 15% hydrocarbyl oil; and a mixture comprising (a) from about 10 to about 40% of at least one normally water-insoluble, oil-soluble anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent, and (b) from about 40 to about 70% of a nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative as claimed in any one of claims 30-33, 14-22, 25-28, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 48-41, 21-53 or 54-47.
- 58. A composition comprising: water; and dispersed in said water a nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction, at a temperature in the range of about 30.degree. C. to the decomposition temperature of one or more of the reaction components, of (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent with (B) at least one alkanol tertiary monoamine, said acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms and said monoamine (B) having one hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms, said water being provided in an effective amount to disperse said derivative in said water.
- 59. The composition of claim 58 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR13## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 60. The composition of claim 58 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula: ##STR14## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 61. The composition of claim 58 wherein said monoamine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 62. The composition of claim 58 wherein the equivalent ratio of acylating agent (A) to monoamine (B) used in the reaction is in the range of about 1:0.5 to about 1:3.0.
- 63. The composition of claim 58 wherein the equivalent ratio of acylating agent (A) to monoamine (B) used in the reaction is in the range of about 1:1 to about 1:2.5.
- 64. The composition of claim 58 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 65. The composition of claim 58 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 66. The composition of claim 59 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 67. The composition of claim 59 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 68. A water-based system comprising the composition of any one of claims 58-67, and at least one normally water-insoluble, oil-soluble, anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent, said derivative being provided in an effective amount to disperse said agent in said system, said agent being provided in an effective amount to impart anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing properties to said system.
- 69. A system comprising the composition of any one of claims 58-67, said system comprising about 40% to about 70% water, and a mixture, said mixture comprising about 40% to about 70% of said derivative, and about 10% to about 40% of a normally water-insoluble, oil-soluble anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent.
- 70. A nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction of a mixture comprising (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent, said acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms. (B) at least one alkanoyl tertiary monoamine, said monoamine having one hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms and (C) at least one supplemental carboxylic acylating agent in addition to and different from the acylating agent (A).
- 71. The derivative of claim 70 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR15## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 72. The derivative of claim 70 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula ##STR16## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 73. The derivative of claim 70 wherein said monoamine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 74. The derivative of claim 70 wherein the equivalent ratio of agents (A) and (C) to monoamine (B) used in the reaction is in the range of about 1:0.5 to about 1:3.0.
- 75. The derivative of claim 71 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or alkenyl group.
- 76. The derivative of claim 70 wherein the total amount of agents (A) and (C) is at least 50 mole percent agent (A).
- 77. The derivative of claim 70 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 78. The derivative of claim 70 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 79. The derivative of claim 70 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is a fatty acid of 10 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 80. The derivative of claim 70 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is a low molecular weight alkyl or alkenyl succinic acid.
- 81. The derivative of claim 70 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is tetrapropenyl succinic anhydride.
- 82. A nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction of a mixture comprising (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent, said acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms, (B) at least one alkanol tertiary monoamine, said monoamine having one hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms and (D) at least one supplemental alkanol amine in addition to the alkanol tertiary monoamine (B).
- 83. The derivative of claim 82 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR17## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 84. The derivative of claim 82 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula ##STR18## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 85. The derivative of claim 82 wherein said monoamine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 86. The derivative of claim 82 wherein the equivalent ratio of component (A) to the amount of (B) and (D) combined is in the range of about 0.5 to about 3 equivalents of components (B) and (D) per equivalent of component (A).
- 87. The derivative of claim 82 wherein the equivalent ratio of acylating agent (A) to the amount of (B) and (D) combined is in the range of about 1:1 to about 1:2.5.
- 88. The derivative of claim 82 wherein at least 50 mole percent of the total of components (B) and (D) is component (B).
- 89. The derivative of claim 82 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 90. The derivative of claim 82 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 91. The derivative of claim 83 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 92. The derivative of claim 83 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 93. The derivative of claim 82 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) has up to about 26 carbon atoms.
- 94. The derivative of claim 82 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) is a primary, secondary or tertiary alkanol amine.
- 95. The derivative of claim 83 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) has the formula

- wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxy alkyl and hydroxy alkenyl and R.sub.3 is alkylene.
- 96. The derivative of claim 83 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) is ethanolamine.
- 97. A nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction of a mixture comprising (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent, said acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms, (B) at least one alkanol tertiary monoamine, said monoamine having one hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms, (C) at least one supplemental carboxylic acylating agent in addition to and different from acylating agent (A), and (D) at least one supplemental alkanol amine in addition to and different from the alkanol tertiary monoamine (B).
- 98. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR19## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 99. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula ##STR20## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 100. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said monoamine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 101. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 102. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 103. The derivative of claim 98 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 104. The derivative of claim 98 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 105. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is a fatty acid of 10 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 106. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is a low molecular weight alkyl or alkenyl succinic acid.
- 107. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is tetrapropenyl succinic anhydride.
- 108. The derivative of claim 97 wherein the equivalent ratio of components (A) and (C) to components (B) and (D) used in the reaction is in the range of about 0.5 to about 3 equivalents of components (B) and (D) per equivalent of components (A) and (C).
- 109. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) has up to about 26 carbon atoms.
- 110. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) is a primary, secondary or tertiary alkanol amine.
- 111. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) has the formula
- R.sub.1 R.sub.2 N--R.sub.3 --OH
- wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxy alkyl and hydroxy alkenyl and R.sub.3 is alkylene.
- 112. The derivative of claim 97 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) is ethanolamine.
- 113. A water-based system comprising (a) at least one normally water-insoluble, oil-soluble anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent, and (b) an effective amount of a nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative as claimed in any one of claims 110-112 to disperse component (a) in said system.
- 114. A water-based system comprising: about 40 to about 70% water: from 0 up to about 15% hydrocarbyl oil; and a mixture comprising (a) from about 10 to about 40% of at least one, water-insoluble, oil-soluble anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent, and (b) from about 40 to about 70% of a nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative as claimed in any one of claims 131-173.
- 115. A composition comprising: water; and dispersed in said water a nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction, at a temperature in the range of about 30.degree. C. to the decomposition temperature of one or more of the reaction components, of (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent with (B) at least one alkanol tertiary monoamine, said acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms and said monoamine (B) having on hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms, said water being provided in an effective amount to disperse said derivative in said water.
- 116. The composition of claim 115 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR21## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 117. The composition of claim 115 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula: ##STR22## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 118. The composition of claim 115 wherein said monoamine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 119. The composition of claim 115 wherein the equivalent ratio of acylating agent (A) to monoamine (B) used in the reaction is in the range of about 1:0.5 to about 1:3.0.
- 120. The composition of claim 115 wherein the equivalent ratio of acylating agent (A) to monoamine (B) used in the reaction is in the range of about 1:1 to about 1:2.5.
- 121. The composition of claim 115 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 122. The composition of claim 115 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 123. The composition of claim 116 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 124. The composition of claim 116 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 125. A water-based system comprising the composition of any one of claims 115-124, and at least one normally water-insoluble, oil-soluble anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent, said derivative being provided in an effective amount to disperse said agent in said system, said agent being provided in an effective amount to impart anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing properties to said system.
- 126. A system comprising the composition of any one of claims 115-124, said system comprising about 40% to about 70% water, and a mixture, said mixture comprising about 40% to about 70% of said derivative, and about 10% to about 40% of a normally water-insoluble, oil-soluble anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent.

A nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction of a mixture comprising (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent, said acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms, (B) at least one alkanol tertiary monoamine, said monoamine having one hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms and (C) at least one supplemental carboxylic acylating agent in addition to and different from the acylating agent (A).
- 128. The derivative of claim 127 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR23## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 129. The derivative of claim 127 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula ##STR24## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 130. The derivative of claim 127 wherein said monoamine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 131. The derivative of claim 127 wherein the equivalent ratio of agents (A) and (C) to monoamine (B) used in the reaction is in the range of about 1:0.5 to about 1:3.0.
- 132. The derivative of claim 128 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or alkenyl group.
- 133. The derivative of claim 191 wherein the total amount of agents (A) and (C) is at least 50 mole percent agent (A).
- 134. The derivative of claim 127 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 135. The derivative of claim 127 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 136. The derivative of claim 127 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is a fatty acid of 10 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 137. The derivative of claim 127 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is a low molecular weight alkyl or alkenyl succinic acid.
- 138. The derivative of claim 127 wherein said supplemental acylating agent (C) is tetrapropenyl succinic anhydride.
- 139. A nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction of a mixture comprising (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent, said acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms, (B) at least one alkanol tertiary monoamine, said monoamine having one hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms and (D) at least one supplemental alkanol amine in addition to the alkanol tertiary monoamine (B).
- 140. The derivative of claim 139 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR25## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 141. The derivative of claim 139 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula ##STR26## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 142. The derivative of claim 139 wherein said monoamine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 143. The derivative of claim 139 wherein the equivalent ratio of component (A) to the amount of (B) and (D) combined is in the range of about 0.5 to about 3 equivalents of components (B) and (D) per equivalent of component (A).
- 144. The derivative of claim 139 wherein the equivalent ratio of acylating agent (A) to the amount of (B) and (D) combined is in the range of about 1:1 to about 1:2.5.
- 145. The derivative of claim 139 wherein at least 50 mole percent of the total of components (B) and (D) is component (B).
- 146. The derivative of claim 139 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 147. The derivative of claim 139 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.

- 152. The derivative of claim 139 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) has the formula
- R.sub.1 R.sub.2 N--R.sub.3 --OH
- wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxy alkyl and hydroxy alkenyl and R.sub.3 is alkylene.
- 153. The derivative of claim 139 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) is ethanolamine.
- 154. A nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative made by reaction of a mixture comprising (A) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent, said acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms, (B) at least one alkanol tertiary monoamine, said monoamine having one hydroxyl group and a total of up to about 40 carbon atoms, (C) at least one supplemental carboxylic acylating agent in addition to and different from acylating agent (A), and (D) at least one supplemental alkanol amine in addition to and different from the alkanol tertiary monoamine (B).
- 155. The derivative of claim 154 wherein said acylating agent (A) is represented by the formula ##STR27## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 156. The derivative of claim 154 wherein said amine (B) is represented by the formula ##STR28## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkylene group of two to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 157. The derivative of claim 154 wherein said monoamine (B) is diethyl ethanol amine.
- 158. The derivative of claim 154 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 159. The derivative of claim 154 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group of about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.

- wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxy alkyl and hydroxy alkenyl and R.sub.3 is alkylene.
- 169. The derivative of claim 154 wherein said supplemental alkanol amine (D) is ethanolamine.
- 170. A water-based system comprising (a) at least one normally water-insoluble, oil-soluble, anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent, and (b) an effective amount of a nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative as claimed in any one of claims 127-169 to disperse component (a) in said system.
- 171. A water-based system comprising: about 40 to about 70% water; from 0 up to about 15% hydrocarbyl oil; and a mixture comprising (a) from about 10 to about 40% of at least one, water-insoluble, oil-soluble anti-wear, extreme pressure, load-carrying or dispersing agent, and (b) from about 40 to about 70% of a nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic acid derivative as claimed in any one of claims 127-169.
