Claims
- 1. A method of thickening a liquid composition which comprises dissolving in the composition a solid polymer of a polymerizable mixture comprising: (A) at least about 30% by weight, of the polymer, of a monoethylenically .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acid selected from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, .alpha.-chloroacrylic acid, crotonic acid, itaconic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, citraconic acid, mesaconic acid and mixtures of same, and (B) an oligomer having a number average molecular weight of from about 400 to about 10,000, wherein the oligomer is an unhydrolyzed or partially-hydrolyzed anionically-polymerized oligomer of allyl methacrylic or a (C.sub.3 -C.sub.7)allyloxyalkyl methacrylate; wherein the average chain length of the oligomer, n, is about 6 to about 50 mers and at least about 85% of the molecules have chain lengths of about .sqroot.2n to about 2n mers and wherein the oligomer comprises about 0.1% to about 10% by weight of the mixture; in an amount effective to cause thickening.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the oligomer is an oligomer of allyl methacrylate having a number average molecular weight between about 700 and about 3,000; the polymer is neutralized to a pH of about 4 to about 10; and the acid is acrylic acid.
- 3. A method according to claim 2 wherein the liquid composition is an aqueous composition.
- 4. A method according to claim 2 wherein the polymer is dissolved in the composition in an amount of about 0.1% to about 5% by weight.
- 5. A thickened composition which comprises the polymer of claim 2 and a solvent.
- 6. A composition according to claim 5 wherein the solvent is water and the polymer is dissolved in the composition in an amount of about 0.1% to about 5% by weight.
- 7. A method of thickening a liquid composition which comprises dissolving in the composition a solid polymer of a polymerizable mixture comprising: (A) at least about 30% by weight, of the polymer, of a monoethylenically .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acid selected from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, .alpha.-chloroacrylic acid, crotonic acid, itaconic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, citraconic acid, mesaconic acid and mixtures of same, and (B) an oligomer having a number average molecular weight of from about 400 to about 10,000, wherein the oligomer is an unhydrolyzed or partially-hydrolyzed oligomer of allyl acrylate or a (C.sub.3 -C.sub.7)allyloxyalkyl acrylate; wherein the average chain length of the oligomer, n, is about 6 to about 30 mers and at least about 80% by weight consists of molecules having chain lengths of about n/3 to about 3.3 n mers and wherein the oligomer comprises about 0.1% to about 10% by weight of the mixture; in an amount effective to cause thickening.
- 8. A method according to claim 7 wherein the oligomer is an oligomer of allyl acrylate having a number average molecular weight between about 700 and about 3,000; the polymer is neutralized to a pH of about 4 to about 10; and the acid is acrylic acid.
- 9. A method according to claim 8 wherein the liquid composition is an aqueous composition.
- 10. A method according to claim 8 wherein the polymer is dissolved in the composition in an amount of about 0.1% to about 5% by weight.
- 11. A thickened composition which comprises the polymer of claim 8 and a solvent.
- 12. A composition according to claim 11 wherein the solvent is water and the polymer is dissolved in the composition in an amount of about 0.1% to about 5% by weight.
