Claims
- 1. A composition comprising the combination of (A) at least one nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic solubilizer made by the reaction of (A)(I) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of at least about 12 to about 500 carbon atoms with (A)(II) at least one (a) N-(hydroxyl-substituted hydrocarbyl) amine, (b) hydroxyl-substituted poly(hydrocarbyloxy) analog of said amine or (c) mixtures of (a) and (b); and (B) at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of ethoxylated amines and tall oil ethoxylates.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the acylating agent (A)(I) is a polycarboxylic acid acylating agent.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein said acylating agent (A)(I) is represented by the formula: ##STR6## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbylbased substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbylbased substituent has from about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbylbased substituent has from about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbylbased substituent has from about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbylbased substituent has from about 20 to about 300 carbon atoms.
- 9. The composition of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbylbased substituent has from about 30 to about 300 carbon atoms.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbylbased substituent has from about 50 to about 250 carbon atoms.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbylbased substituent is a poly(isobutene) group.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine (A)(II) has from 1 to 4 hydroxyl groups per molecule bonded to a hydrocarbyl group, said hydrocarbyl group being bonded to the amine portion of the molecule.
- 13. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine (A)(II) is a primary, secondary or tertiary alkanol amine of up to about 40 carbon atoms.
- 14. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine (A)(II) is a mixture of at least two alkanol amines of up to about 40 carbon atoms each.
- 15. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine (A)(II) is a hydroxy-substituted primary amine of the formula
- R.sub.a--NH.sub.2
- wherein R.sub.a is a monovalent organic group containing at least one hydroxy group, the total number of carbon atoms in R.sub.a not exceeding about 20.
- 16. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine (A)(II) is selected from the group consisting of (a) primary, secondary and tertiary alkanol amines which can be represented correspondingly by the formulae: ##STR7## (b) hydroxyl-substituted oxyalkylene analogs of said alkanol amines represented by the formulae: ##STR8## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 8 carbon atoms or hydroxyl-substituted hydrocarbyl group of 2 to about 8 carbon atoms and R' is a divalent hydrocarbyl group of two to about 18 carbon atoms, and (c) mixtures of two or more thereof.
- 17. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine (A)(II) is diethylethanolamine.
- 18. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine (A)(II) is a mixture of diethylethanolamine and ethanolamine.
- 19. The composition of claim 1 wherein said surfactant (B) is an ethoxylated amine.
- 20. The composition of claim 1 wherein said surfactant (B) is an ethylene oxide condensation product of a primary fatty amine.
- 21. The composition of claim 1 wherein said surfactant (B) is an ethoxylated oleyl amine.
- 22. The composition of claim 1 wherein said surfactant (B) is a tall oil ethoxylate.
- 23. The composition of claim 1 wherein said surfactant (B) is a polyethoxylated tall oil fatty acid.
- 24. The composition of claim 1 wherein the ratio of component (A)(I) to component (A)(II) is in the range of about 0.5 to about 3 moles of component (A)(II) per equivalent of component (A)(I).
- 25. The composition of claim 1 wherein said solubilizer (A) is an ester, salt, amide, imide, amic ester or mixture of such products.
- 26. The composition of claim 1 wherein said solubilizer (A) is an ester/salt.
- 27. A composition as claimed in claim 1 which also comprises (C) at least one oil-soluble, water-insoluble functional additive.
- 28. The composition of claim 27 wherein said additive (C) is an anti-wear agent, extreme-pressure agent and/or load-carrying agent.
- 29. An aqueous system comprising at least about 40% water and the composition of claim 1.
- 30. An aqueous system comprising at least about 40% water, the composition of claim 1, and (C) at least one oil-soluble, water-insoluble functional additive.
- 31. A concentrate comprising about 40% to about 70% water, less than about 15% hydrocarbyl oil, and the composition of claim 1.
- 32. A concentrate comprising about 40% to about 70% water, less than about 15% hydrocarbyl oil, the composition of claim 1, and (C) at least one oil-soluble, water-insoluble functional additive.
- 33. A water-based functional fluid made by diluting the concentrate of claim 31 with water wherein the ratio of water to concentrate is in the range of about 80:20 to about 99:1.
- 34. A water-based functional fluid made by diluting the concentrat of claim 32 with water wherein the ratio of water to concentrate is in the range of about 80:20 to about 99:1.
- 35. A method for preparing aqueous systems, including both aqueous concentrates and water-based functional fluids, containing (C) at least one oil-soluble, water-insoluble functional additive which comprises the steps of:
- (1) mixing the composition of claim 1 with said functional additive (C) to form a dispersion/solution; optionally
- (2) combining said dispersion/solution with water to form said concentrate; and/or optionally
- (3) diluting said concentrate or dispersion/solution with water wherein the total amount of water used is in the amount required to provide the desired concentration of said functional additive (C) in said water-based functional fluid.
- 36. A composition comprising the combination of (A) at least one nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic solubilizer made by reaction of (A)(I) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of at least about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms with (A)(II) at least one N-(hydroxyl-substituted hydrocarbyl) amine and (B) at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of ethoxylated amines and tall oil ethoxylates.
- 37. The composition of claim 36 wherein said acylating agent (A)(I) is a polycarboxylic acid acylating agent.
- 38. The composition of claim 36 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent has an average of about 30 to about 300 carbon atoms.
- 39. The composition of claim 36 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent has an average of about 50 to about 250 carbon atoms.
- 40. The composition of claim 36 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group.
- 41. The composition of claim 36 wherein said acylating agent (A)(I) is represented by the formula ##STR9## wherein hyd is an alkyl or alkenyl group having an average of about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 42. The composition of claim 36 wherein said acylating agent (A)(I) is a poly(isobutene)-substituted succinic anhydride.
- 43. The composition of claim 36 wherein said acylating agent (A)(I) is a poly(isobutene)-substituted succinic anhydride, the poly(isobutene) substituent of said succinic anhydride having a molecular weight of about 1120.
- 44. The composition of claim 36 wherein said amine (A)(II) is a primary, secondary or tertiary alkanol amine of two to about 40 carbon atoms or a mixture thereof.
- 45. The composition of claim 36 wherein the amine (A)(II) is a monoamine.
- 46. The composition of claim 36 wherein the amine (A)(II) is a tertiary amine.
- 47. The composition of claim 36 wherein the amine (A)(II) is represented by the formula ##STR10## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 8 carbon atoms or hydroxyl-substituted hydrocarbyl group of 2 to about 8 carbon atoms and R' is a divalent hydrocarbyl group of 2 to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 48. The composition of claim 36 wherein the amine (A)(II) is diethylethanolamine.
- 49. The composition of claim 36 wherein the amine (A)(II) is a mixture of diethylethanolamine and monoethanolamine.
- 50. The composition of claim 36 wherein said acylating agent (A)(I) is a poly(isobutene)-substituted succinic anhydride and the amine (A)(II) is diethylethanolamine.
- 51. The composition of claim 50 wherein the poly(isobutene) substituent of said acylating agent (A)(I) has an average of from about 50 to about 250 carbon atoms.
- 52. The composition of claim 36 wherein said acylating agent (A)(I) is a poly(isobutene)-substituted succinic anhydride and the amine (A)(II) is a mixture of diethylethanolamine and monoethanolamine.
- 53. The composition of claim 52 wherein the poly(isobutene)substituent of said acylating agent (A)(I) has an average of from about 50 to about 250 carbon atoms.
- 54. The composition of claim 36 wherein the ratio of acy ating agent (A)(I) to amine (A)(II) is in the range of about 0.5 to about 3 moles of amine (A)(II) per equivalent of acylating agent (A)(I).
- 55. The composition of claim 36 wherein said solubilizer (A) is an ester, salt, amide, imide, amic ester or mixture of such products.
- 56. The composition of claim 36 wherein said solubilizer (A) is an ester/salt.
- 57. The composition of claim 36 wherein said surfactant (B) is an ethoxylated amine.
- 58. The composition of claim 36 wherein said surfactant (B) is an ethylene oxide condensation product of a primary fatty amine.
- 59. The composition of claim 36 wherein said surfactant (B) is a tall oil ethoxylate.
- 60. The composition of claim 36 wherein said surfactant (B) is a polyethoxylated tall oil fatty acid.
- 61. A composition as claimed in claim 36 which also comprises (C) at least one oil-soluble, water-insoluble functional additive.
- 62. A composition as claimed in claim 36 which also comprises water, said components (A) and (B) being dispersed in said water.
- 63. A composition as claimed in claim 61 which also comprises water, said components (A), (B) and (C) being dispersed in said water.
- 64. An aqueous system comprising at least about 40% water and the composition of claim 36 with the proviso that less than about 15% hydrocarbyl oil is present.
- 65. An aqueous system comprising at least about 40% water and the composition of claim 61 with the proviso that less than about 15% hydrocarbyl oil is present.
- 66. An aqueous concentrate comprising from about 40% to about 70% water and the composition of claim 36.
- 67. An aqueous concentrate comprising from about 40% to about 70% water and the composition of claim 61.
- 68. The composition of claim 61 wherein said additive (C) is an anti-wear agent, extreme pressure agent and/or load-carrying agent.
- 69. The system of claim 65 wherein said additive (C) is an anti-wear agent, extreme pressure agent and/or loadcarrying agent.
- 70. The concentrate of claim 67 wherein said additive (C) is an anti-wear agent, extreme pressure agent and/or load-carrying agent.
- 71. A water-based functional fluid made by diluting the concentrate of claim 66 with water wherein the ratio of water to concentrate is in the range of about 80:20 to about 99:1.
- 72. A water-based functional fluid made by diluting the concentrate of claim 67 with water wherein the ratio of water to concentrate is in the range of about 80:20 to about 99:1.
- 73. A method for preparing aqueous systems, including both aqueous concentrates and water-based functional fluids, containing (C) at least one oil-soluble, water-insoluble functional additive which comprises the steps of:
- (1) mixing the composition of claim 36 with said functional additive (C) to form a-dispersion/solution; optionally
- (2) combining said dispersion/solution with water to form said concentrate; and/or optionally
- (3) diluting said concentrate or dispersion/
- solution with water wherein the total amount of water used is in the amount required to provide the desired concentration of said functional additive (C) in said water-based functional fluid.
- 74. A composition comprising water and dispersed in said water the combination of (A) at least one nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic solubilizer made by the reaction of (A)(I) at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent having at least one hydrocarbyl-based substituent of at least about 12 to about 500 carbon atoms with (A)(II) at least one (a) N-(hydroxyl-substituted hydrocarbyl) amine, (b) hydroxylsubstituted poly(hydrocarbyloxy) analog of said amine of (c) mixtures of (a) and (b), and (B) at least one surfactant.
- 75. The composition of claim 74 wherein the acylating agent (A)(I) is a polycarboxylic acid acylating agent.
- 76. The composition of claim 74 wherein said acylating agent (A)(I) is represented by the formula: ##STR11## wherein hyd is said hydrocarbyl-based substituent.
- 77. The composition of claim 74 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is an alkyl or an alkenyl group.
- 78. The composition of claim 74 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent has from about 20 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 79. The composition of claim 74 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent has from about 30 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 80. The composition of claim 74 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent has from about 50 to about 500 carbon atoms.
- 81. The composition of claim 74 wherein said hydrocarbyl-based substituent is a poly(isobutene) group.
- 82. The composition of claim 74 wherein the amine (A)(II) has from 1 to 4 hydroxyl groups per molecule bonded to a hydrocarbyl group, said hydrocarbyl group being bonded to the amine portion of the molecule.
- 83. The composition of claim 74 wherein the amine (A)(II) is a primary, secondary or tertiary alkanol amine of up to about 40 carbon atoms.
- 84. The composition of claim 74 wherein the amine (A)(II) is a mixture of at least two alkanol amines of up to aobut 40 carbon atoms each.
- 85. The composition of claim 74 wherein the amine (A)(II) is a hydroxy-substituted primary amine of the formula
- R.sub.a --NH.sub.2
- wherein R.sub.a is a monovalent organic group containing at least one hydroxy group, the total number of carbon atoms in R.sub.a not exceeding about 20.
- 86. The composition of claim 74 wherein the amine (A)(II) is selected from the group consisting of (a) primary secondary and tertiary alkanol amines which can be represented correspondingly by the formulae: ##STR12## (b) hydroxyl-substituted oxyalkylene analogs of said alkanol amines represented by the formulae: ##STR13## wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group of one to about 8 carbon atoms or hydroxyl-substituted hydrocarbyl group of 2 to about 8 carbon atoms and R' is a divalent hydrocarbyl group of two to about 18 carbon atoms, and (c) mixtures of two or more thereof.
- 87. The composition of claim 74 wherein said amine (A)(II) comprises diethylethanolamine.
- 88. The composition of claim 74 wherein said amine (A)(II) comprises diethylethanolamine and ethanolamine.
- 89. The composition of claim 74 wherein said surfactant (B) is a cationic, anionic, nonionic and/or amphoteric surfactant.
- 90. The composition of claim 74 wherein said surfactant (B) comprises at least one alkylene oxide-treated hydroxyaromatic compound, alcohol, ester, amine and/or amide.
- 91. The composition of claim 74 wherein said surfactant (B) comprises at least one ethylene oxide-treated hydroxyaromatic compount, alcohol, ester, amine and/or amide.
- 92. The composition of claim 74 wherein said surfactant (B) comprises at least one ethylene oxide propylene oxide block copolymer.
- 93. The composition of claim 74 wherein said surfactant (B) comprises at least one glycerol ester and/or sugar ester.
- 94. The composition of claim 74 wherein said surfactant (B) comprises at least one alkylene oxide-treated alkyl phenol condensate.
- 95. The composition of claim 74 wherein said surfactant (B) comprises at least one ethoxylated alkyl phenol.
- 96. The composition of claim 74 wherein said surfactant (B) comprises at least one soap, organo sulfate, sulfonate, sulfocarboxylic acid and/or their salts, or phosphate.
- 97. The composition of claim 74 wherein said surfactant (B) comprises at least one amine oxide.
- 98. The composition of claim 74 wherein said surfactant (B) comprises at least one quaternary ammonium salt.
- 99. The composition of claim 74 wherein the ratio of component (A)(I) to component (A)(II) is in the range of about 0.5 to about 3 moles of component (A)(II) per equivalent of component (A)(I).
- 100. A composition as claimed in claim 74 which also comprises (C) at least one oil-soluble, water-insoluble functional additive.
- 101. The composition of claim 100 wherein said additive (C) is an anti-wear agent, extreme-pressure agent and/or load-carrying agent.
- 102. A composition comprising water and dispersed in said water: (A) at least one nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic solubilizer made by the reaction of (A)(I) at least one poly(isobutene) -substituted succinic acid or derivative thereof, the poly(isobutene) substituent having an average of from about 12 to about 500 carbon atoms, with (A)(II) diethylethanolamine; and (B) at least one surfactant.
- 103. A composition comprising water and dispersed in said water: (A) at least one nitrogen-containing, phosphorus-free carboxylic solubilizer made by the reaction of (A)(I) at least one poly(isobutene)-substituted succinic acid or derivative thereof, the poly(isobutene) substituent having an average of from about 12 to about 500 carbon atoms, with (A)(II) diethylethanolamine and ethanolamine; and (B) at least one surfactant.
