Claims
- 1. A carboxymethylated .beta.-1,3-glucan of the formula: ##STR3## wherein at least one of the R's is --CH.sub.2 COOH, with the remainder being H; n is an integer, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, which is produced by carboxymethylating .beta.-1,3-glucan or its hydrolysate shown by the formula ##STR4## wherein n is an integral number, and whose average degree of polymerization is between 2 and 1000.
- 2. The carboxymethylated .beta.-1,3-glucan as claimed in claim 1, wherein the average degree of polymerization is between 15 and 800.
- 3. The carboxymethylated .beta.-1,3-glucan as claimed in claim 2, wherein the average degree of polymerization is between 40 and 600.
- 4. The carboxymethylated .beta.-1,3-glucan as claimed in claim 1, wherein the degree of substitution of the carboxymethyl groups is between 0.30 and 1.22.
- 5. The carboxymethylated .beta.-1,3-glucan as claimed in claim 1, wherein said .beta.-1,3-glucan is produced by a microorganism belonging to the genus Alcaligenes or the genus Agrobacterium and is water-insoluble and thermogelable in the presence of water at an average degree of polymerization of 170, and said hydrolysate is a lower polymer obtainable upon partial hydrolysis of said .beta.-1,3-glucan.
- 6. The carboxymethylated .beta.-1,3-glucan as claimed in claim 4, wherein the degree of substitution of the carboxymethyl groups is between 0.45 and 0.75.
