Abstract
The invention relates to a device for facilitating and easing the work of gauging the reveal between the edge of the door jamb to the trim, window sill to the trim, the underflooring to the baseboard, and locating studs.
Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The invention relates to a device for facilitating and easing the work of gauging the reveal between the edge of the door jamb to the trim, window sill to the trim, the underflooring to the baseboard, and locating studs. In particular to a device which simplifies and unifies the operations of gauging the reveal between the edge of the door jamb to the trim, window sill to the trim, the underflooring to the baseboard, and locating studs.


BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Historically carpenters used at least 3 different tools such as a carpenters square, measuring tape, and stud finder to accomplish properly gauging the reveal of the trim to the door jamb or window sill, and gauging the reveal of the baseboard to the underflooring. The customary steps to properly applying trim to a door jamb or window sill, or the baseboard from the underflooring, or window sill would be to first measure and mark the proper distance from the door jamb to the trim, window sill to the trim, or the underflooring to the baseboard using a measuring tool. Next, change the measuring tool to a carpenters square so to align and mark the edge of the trim or baseboard location to be square with the door jamb or underflooring, and then change the carpenters square to a stud finder so to locate the stud to which the trim will be attached. This constant exchanging and handling of different tools to achieve one desired result wastes a great deal of time and effort which slows the completion of the job thereby increasing the expense of completing the job.


While there exist numerous measuring devices such as rulers and tape measures, numerous devices for squaring trim to window sills, door jambs, etc. and the use of magnets to find studs, there is no discovered prior art as to the unique combination of these abilities in a unified package with the utility and convenience as presented in the invention.


SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The heretofore unfulfilled requirement for a means of quickly and efficiently gauging the reveal between the edge of the door jamb to the trim, window sill to the trim, the underflooring to the baseboard, and locating the studs to which the trim will be attached is herein fulfilled through the invention.


The invention incorporates into a single body different means for gauging the reveal between the edge of the door jamb to the trim, window sill to the trim, the underflooring to the baseboard, and locating studs.


In one instance, measuring the distance from the door jamb to the trim is so accomplished by placing the invention with one edge of the invention specific to measuring the reveal of a door jamb abutted against the door jamb and an edge of the invention associated to the aforementioned edge specific to measuring the reveal of a door jamb being abutted against the trim thereby properly and squarely locating the trim relative to the door jamb by virtue of the distance between the edge of the invention specific to measuring the reveal of a door jamb and the edge of the invention associated to the aforementioned edge.


In another instance, measuring the distance from the window sill to the trim is accomplished by placing the invention with one edge of the invention specific to measuring the reveal of a window sill abutted against the window sill and an edge of the invention associated to the aforementioned edge specific to measuring the reveal of a window sill being abutted against the trim thereby properly and squarely locating the trim relative to the window sill by virtue of the distance between the edge of the invention specific to measuring the reveal of a window sill and the edge of the invention associated to the aforementioned edge.


In another instance, measuring the distance from the baseboard to the underflooring is accomplished by placing the invention with one edge of the invention specific to measuring the reveal of the baseboard abutted against the baseboard and an edge of the invention associated to the aforementioned edge specific to measuring the reveal of the baseboard being abutted against the underflooring thereby properly and squarely locating the baseboard relative to the underflooring by virtue of the distance between the edge of the invention specific to measuring the reveal of the baseboard and the edge of the invention associated to the aforementioned edge.


To facilitate the mounting of the trim it is important to locate the wood or metal stud to which the trim will be attached. The present invention accomplishes this by the use of a magnet embedded within the invention. When the invention is placed close to a ferric metal or to ferric metal embedded within the wood stud the magnet exerts an attractive force to the metal stud, or to metal embedded within the wood stud. This force can be felt by the user of the invention thereby alerting the so user of the invention that the invention is located close to a stud.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS


FIG. 1 is a top plan view of the invention (10) consisting of specific edges (20), (30), (40), (50) and (60) with a specific distance between edges (20), (30), (40), (50), (60) and specific associated edges (25), (35), (45), (55) and (65) so to correctly and easily gauge the reveal between the edge of the door jamb to the trim, window sill to the trim, and underflooring to the baseboard. Specific edge (60) also serves as a mount for magnets (70).



FIG. 2 is a top isometric plan view of the invention (10) consisting of specific edges (20), (30), (40), (50) and (60) with a specific distance between edges (20), (30), (40), (50), (60) and specific associated edges (25), (35), (45), (55) and (65) so to correctly and easily gauge the reveal between the edge of the door jamb to the trim, window sill to the trim, and underflooring to the baseboard. Specific edge (60) also serves as a mount for magnets (70).



FIG. 3 is a side plan view of the invention (10) consisting of specific edges (20), (30), (40), (50) and (60) with a specific distance between edges (30), (40), (50), (60) and specific associated edges (35), (45), (55) and (65) so to correctly and easily gauge the reveal between the edge of the door jamb to the trim, window sill to the trim, and underflooring to the baseboard. Specific edge (60) also serves as a mount for magnets (70).



FIG. 4 is a cross section across A-A of FIG. 1 (10) consisting of consisting of specific edges (30), (40), (50) and (60) with a specific distance between edges (20), (30), (40), (60) and specific associated edges (35), (45), and (65) so to correctly in and easily gauge the reveal between the edge of the door jamb to the trim, window sill to the trim, and underflooring to the baseboard. Specific edge (60) also serves as a mount for magnets (70).



FIG. 5 is a bottom plan view of the invention (10).


The embodiments and examples described only serve for explaining the invention; however, they are not supposed to limit the spirit and the scope of the invention.

Claims
  • 1. A device for easily and conveniently placing trim at the proper distance from the doorjamb, window sill and between the baseboard and underflooring consisting of at least two specific edges with their associated edges spaced at such a distance so as to create the proper reveal;
  • 2. The device of claim 1 further incorporating at least one magnet so as to facilitate the location of a stud for mounting the trim by the magnet being attracted to the stud if the stud constructed of ferric based metal or attracted to metal in the stud if the stud contains ferric based metal within it or close to it such as a nail or screw.
