Claims
- 1. An apparatus for straightening carpet comprising:
a heating section for heating at least a portion of a roll of carpet such that a backing material on the carpet is softened; and a straightening section adapted for applying stretching forces to the heated carpet, whereby the carpet is straightened while the backing is softened and remains substantially straight when the backing is cooled.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising an entry section adapted for receiving the roll of carpet;
wherein, said heating section receives the carpet from said entry section.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said entry section comprises an entry conveyor adjacent to an entry side of said heating section.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said entry conveyor has an upwardly concave curvilinear configuration.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said entry conveyor defines a recess adapted for receiving the roll of carpet.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said entry conveyor comprises:
a curvilinear support; and a plurality of rollers disposed on said support.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said heating section comprises:
a duct; and a heater disposed in said duct.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said heating section further comprises:
a blower in communication with said duct for blowing air therethrough and across said heater.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said duct comprises:
a lower duct; and an upper duct in communication with said lower duct.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said blower is in communication with said lower duct.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said lower duct is divided into a pair of sections, each having a blower in communication therewith.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said blowers are driven by a single shaft.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said heater is disposed within said lower duct.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said heater is one of a plurality of finned strip heaters.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said straightening section comprises a straightening array for engaging said carpet and applying said stretching forces thereto.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said straightening array comprises:
a plurality of straightening plates adapted for gripping engagement with the carpet; and a corresponding plurality of cylinders pivotally connected to said straightening plates for actuating said straightening plates into and out of engagement with the carpet.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said straightening array is movable in a direction of movement of the carpet through said heating and straightening sections.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 15 further comprising a clamping array for engaging and holding said carpet as said straightening array applies said forces.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein said clamping array comprises:
a plurality of clamping plates adapted for gripping engagement with the carpet; and a corresponding plurality of cylinders connected to said clamping plates for actuating said clamping plates into and out of engagement with the carpet.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein said clamping array is one of a plurality of clamping arrays.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein said clamping array is movable in a direction of movement of the carpet through said heating and straightening sections.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 17 further comprising a locking bar for locking said straightening and said clamping arrays together.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein said straightening and clamping arrays are simultaneously movable in a direction of movement of the carpet through said heating and straightening sections while locked together.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said straightening section comprises:
a duct; and a heater disposed in said duct.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 24 wherein said straightening section further comprises:
a blower in communication with said duct for blowing air therethrough and across said heater.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 25 wherein said duct comprises:
a lower duct; and an upper duct in communication with said lower duct.
- 27. The apparatus of claim 26 wherein said blower is in communication with said lower duct.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 27 wherein said lower duct is divided into a pair of sections, each having a blower in communication therewith.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein said blowers are driven by a single shaft.
- 30. The apparatus of claim 26 wherein said heater is disposed within said lower duct.
- 31. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein said heater is one of a plurality of finned strip heaters.
- 32. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a cooling section on an opposite side of said straightening section from said heating section.
- 33. The apparatus of claim 32 wherein said cooling section comprises a table on which the carpet lays substantially flat.
- 34. The apparatus of claim 32 further comprising an exit section adjacent to said cooling section which receives the carpet therefrom.
- 35. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein said exit section comprises an exit conveyor.
- 36. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein said exit conveyor has an upwardly concave curvilinear configuration.
- 37. The apparatus of claim 36 wherein said exit conveyor defines a recess adapted for receiving the roll of carpet as it is moved away from said cooling section.
- 38. The apparatus of claim 35 wherein said exit conveyor comprises:
a curvilinear support; and a plurality of rollers thereon disposed on said support.
- 39. The apparatus of claim 32 wherein said straightening section comprises a straightening array for engaging said carpet and applying said stretching forces thereto.
- 40. The apparatus of claim 39 wherein said straightening array comprises:
a plurality of straightening plates adapted for gripping engagement with the carpet; and a corresponding plurality of cylinders pivotally connected to said straightening plates for actuating said straightening plates into and out of engagement with the carpet.
- 41. The apparatus of claim 39 wherein said straightening array is movable in a direction of movement of the carpet through said heating and straightening sections.
- 42. The apparatus of claim 39 further comprising a clamping array for engaging and holding said carpet as said straightening array applies said forces.
- 43. The apparatus of claim 42 wherein said clamping array comprises:
a plurality of clamping plates adapted for gripping engagement with the carpet; and a corresponding plurality of cylinders connected to said clamping plates for actuating said clamping plates into and out of engagement with the carpet.
- 44. The apparatus of claim 42 wherein said clamping array is one of a plurality of clamping arrays.
- 45. The apparatus of claim 42 wherein said clamping array is movable in a direction of movement of the carpet through said heating and straightening sections.
- 46. The apparatus of claim 42 further comprising a locking bar for locking said straightening and said clamping arrays together.
- 47. The apparatus of claim 46 wherein said straightening and clamping arrays are simultaneously movable in a direction of movement of the carpet through said heating and straightening sections while clamped together.
- 48. An apparatus for straightening carpet comprising:
an entry section adapted for receiving a roll of carpet thereon; a heating section which receives a portion of the carpet from said entry section for heating said portion of the carpet such that a backing material on the carpet is softened; a straightening section which receives the carpet from said heating section and is adapted for applying stretching forces thereto, whereby the carpet is straightened while the backing is softened; a cooling section which receives the carpet from said straightening section whereon the carpet is cooled; and an exit section for receiving the cooled carpet.
- 49. The apparatus of claim 48 wherein said entry section comprises an upwardly concave entry conveyor adjacent to said heating section.
- 50. The apparatus of claim 49 wherein said entry conveyor comprises:
a frame; a curvilinear support attached to said frame; and a plurality of rollers mounted on said support.
- 51. The apparatus of claim 48 wherein said heating section comprises:
an air duct; a blower connected to said duct for blowing air therethrough; and a heater disposed in said duct for heating air moving therethrough.
- 52. The apparatus of claim 51 wherein said air duct comprises:
a lower duct; and an upper duct in communication with said lower duct.
- 53. The apparatus of claim 52 wherein said blower is disposed such that it blows air into said lower duct.
- 54. The apparatus of claim 53 wherein said lower duct is divided into a pair of sections, each having a blower in communication therewith.
- 55. The apparatus of claim 54 wherein said blowers are connected by a drive shaft.
- 56. The apparatus of claim 52 wherein said heater is disposed in said lower duct.
- 57. The apparatus of claim 51 wherein said heater is one of a plurality of finned strip heaters.
- 58. The apparatus of claim 48 wherein said straightening section comprises a stretching array comprising:
a straightening support; a plurality of straightening plates adjacent to said straightening support and adapted for gripping engagement with the carpet; and a plurality of cylinders pivotally attached to said straightening support, each cylinder being pivotally connected to a corresponding one of said straightening plates for actuating said straightening plates into and out of engagement with the carpet.
- 59. The apparatus of claim 58 wherein said cylinders extend downwardly and longitudinally from said straightening support.
- 60. The apparatus of claim 58 wherein said cylinders extend from said straightening support in a direction toward said heating section.
- 61. The apparatus of claim 58 wherein said straightening array is movable between said straightening and cooling sections.
- 62. The apparatus of claim 58 wherein said straightening section comprises a clamping array comprising:
a clamping support; a plurality of clamping plates adjacent to said clamping support and adapted for gripping engagement with the carpet; and a plurality of cylinders attached to said clamping support, each cylinder being connected to a corresponding one of said clamping plates for actuating said clamping plates into and out of engagement with the carpet.
- 63. The apparatus of claim 62 wherein said cylinders are disposed substantially perpendicular to the carpet.
- 64. The apparatus of claim 62 wherein said clamping array is movable between said straightening and cooling sections.
- 65. The apparatus of claim 62 wherein:
said clamping array is one of a pair of clamping arrays; and said clamping arrays are movable between said straightening and cooling sections.
- 66. The apparatus of claim 65 wherein at least two of said straightening arrays and said clamping arrays are simultaneously engagable with the carpet.
- 67. The apparatus of claim 48 wherein said straightening section comprises:
an air duct; a blower connected to said duct for blowing air therethrough; and a heater disposed in said duct for heating air moving therethrough.
- 68. The apparatus of claim 67 wherein said air duct comprises:
a lower duct; and an upper duct in communication with said lower duct.
- 69. The apparatus of claim 68 wherein said blower is disposed such that it blows air into said lower duct.
- 70. The apparatus of claim 69 wherein said lower duct is divided into a pair of sections, each having a blower in communication therewith.
- 71. The apparatus of claim 70 wherein said blowers are connected by a drive shaft.
- 72. The apparatus of claim 68 wherein said heater is disposed in said lower duct.
- 73. The apparatus of claim 67 wherein said heater is one of a plurality of finned strip heaters.
- 74. The apparatus of claim 48 wherein said cooling section comprises a substantially flat table for receiving the carpet thereon.
- 75. The apparatus of claim 48 wherein said exit section comprises an upwardly curving exit conveyor.
- 76. The apparatus of claim 75 wherein said exit conveyor comprises:
a frame; a curvilinear support attached to said frame; and a plurality of rollers mounted on said support.
