Claims
- 1. An assembly comprising:
a substantially rigid frame including at least one of a plurality of frame indices and a plurality of frame index recesses; a flexible carrier including at least one of a plurality of carrier indices and a plurality of carrier index recesses; and a load-bearing fabric joined with the flexible carrier, the load-bearing fabric having an expanded state and a relaxed state, wherein said carrier is mounted to the substantially rigid frame so that the at least one of the plurality of frame indices and plurality of frame index recesses cooperate with the at least one of the plurality of carrier indices and the plurality of carrier index recesses to maintain the fabric in the expanded state.
- 2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of frame indices and each of the plurality of carrier indices include a hooked end, and each of the plurality of frame index recesses and each of the plurality of carrier index recesses include a lip, the hooked end engaging the lip to maintain the fabric in the expanded state.
- 3. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the plurality of frame indices interlock within the plurality of carrier index recesses.
- 4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of frame indices includes at least one angled face, said angled face engaging at least one of the plurality of carrier index recesses to expand the fabric a preselected amount.
- 5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of carrier indices includes at least one angled face, said angled face engaging at least one of the plurality of frame index recesses to expand the fabric a preselected amount.
- 6. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the carrier includes expansion joints.
- 7. The assembly of claim 6 wherein the expansion joints are disposed in an alternating manner between the at least one of the plurality of carrier indices and the plurality of carrier index recesses.
- 8. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the carrier includes a plurality of cross-sectional areas varied to control an amount of expansion in the fabric in the expanded state.
- 9. An assembly comprising:
a frame including a snap feature; a carrier including a corresponding snap feature; and a load-bearing fabric joined with the carrier, said load bearing fabric expandable to an expanded state, wherein the carrier is mounted to the frame and the snap and snap feature interlock to maintain the load-bearing fabric in the expanded state.
- 10. The assembly of claim 9 wherein at least one of the snap feature and corresponding snap feature includes a tapered face that engages the other of the at least one of the snap feature and corresponding snap feature to expand the load-bearing fabric a predetermined amount.
- 11. The assembly of claim 9 wherein the frame includes a flexible component, said load-bearing fabric mounted to the frame across the flexible component in the expanded state.
- 12. The assembly of claim 9 wherein the snap feature includes a hook and the corresponding snap feature includes a lip, said hook interlocking with said lip to maintain the carrier in registration with the frame.
- 13. A method for attaching a carrier and load-bearing fabric assembly to a support structure comprising:
providing a carrier and load-bearing fabric assembly, said assembly having a relaxed state and an expanded state, said assembly including a plurality of interlocking structures; providing a frame including a plurality of corresponding interlocking structures; and joining the assembly and the frame so that said plurality of interlocking structures register with said plurality of corresponding interlocking structures to controllably expand the assembly from the relaxed state to the expanded state.
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein at least one of the interlocking structures and said corresponding interlocking structures includes a taper, said taper configured to provide a predetermined amount of expansion of the assembly.
- 15. The method of claim 13 wherein the carrier of the assembly includes an expansion joint that cooperates with the plurality of interlocking structures and corresponding interlocking structures to provide a preselected amount of expansion of the carrier.
- 16. The method of claim 13 wherein the carrier of the assembly includes an expansion joint disposed between at least two adjacent interlocking structures of said plurality of interlocking structures.
- 17. The method of claim 13 wherein the carrier is molded from an elastic material and the joining step includes stretching the carrier to a preselected dimension.
- 18. The method of claim 15 wherein the expansion joint is an expansion recess defined in the carrier.
- 19. A seating assembly comprising:
a frame including a first portion and a second portion, said second portion flexible in a first direction; and a carrier including a load-bearing fabric secured thereto, said carrier joined with the first portion and the second portion, said load-bearing fabric in an expanded condition and adapted to flex with said second portion in the first direction.
- 20. An apparatus for attaching a carrier including a load-bearing fabric to a support frame comprising:
a primary roller; and a drive roller adjacent the primary roller, the primary roller and drive roller defining a space within which the carrier and support frame are disposed, the drive roller adapted to move the carrier and support frame relative to at least one of the drive roller and primary roller, at least one of the drive roller and the primary roller adapted to move toward the other to join the carrier and support frame within the space, whereby the load-bearing fabric is expanded to a desired tension when the carrier and support frame are joined.
