Claims
- 1. An improved locking mechanism for a fifth wheel assembly for a tractortrailer truck, said truck having a tractor and a trailer; the trailer having a trailer coupling plate with a downwardly extending kingpin; the tractor having the fifth wheel assembly mounted thereon; the fifth wheel assembly having an assembly coupling plate for coupling with the trailer coupling plate; the assembly coupling plate including a pair of rearwardly projecting ramps separated by a kingpin-receiving gap having a blind port to receive the kingpin; the improved locking mechanism comprising:
a lever pivotally movable between locked and unlocked positions; a lock bar pivotally connected to the lever; and a lockjaw movable between locked and unlocked positions; the lockjaw being retained by the lock bar in a locked position adjacent the blind port; the lockjaw being biased to move to the unlocked position when the lever is pivoted to the unlocked position to move the lock bar to at least partially release the lock jaw from the lock bar.
- 2. The improved locking mechanism of claim 1 wherein the fifth wheel assembly has a housing, the lever extending from a front end to a rear end inside the housing; and a handle having an inner end and an outer grip end and extending laterally from the lever adjacent the front end of the lever.
- 3. The improved locking mechanism of claim 2 wherein the outer grip end of the handle extends to a position outside the housing.
- 4. The improved locking mechanism of claim 2 wherein the handle is spring biased against being moved outwardly.
- 5. The improved locking mechanism of claim 3 wherein the handle extends through an aperture in the housing, the aperture having an unlocked section and a locked section.
- 6. The improved locking mechanism of claim 5 wherein the unlocked section has a first width and the locked section has a second width differing from the first width.
- 7. The improved locking mechanism of claim 6 wherein the second width is narrowed compared to the first width.
- 8. The improved locking mechanism of claim 7 wherein the handle is spring biased to remain in the narrowed locked section when the lock jaw is in the locked position.
- 9. The improved locking mechanism of claim 7 wherein the handle has at least one step which passes through the aperture in the unlocked section when the handle is withdrawn.
- 10. The improved locking mechanism of claim 9 wherein the step cannot pass through the narrowed locked section.
- 11. The improved locking mechanism of claim 10 wherein the handle has a terminal loop which is obliquely oriented to facilitate the withdrawal and locking of the handle.
- 12. The improved locking mechanism of claim 2 wherein the handle has an unlocked position and a locked position providing a means for visually ascertaining if the assembly is locked.
- 13. The improved locking mechanism of claim 12 wherein the handle is in an outward position in the unlocked position and in an inward position in the locked position.
- 14. The improved locking mechanism of claim 13 wherein there is a first step on the handle which engages the housing to retain the handle in the unlocked position.
- 15. The improved locking mechanism of claim 14 wherein there is a second step on the handle which engages the housing to retain the handle in the locked position.
- 16. The improved locking mechanism of claim 1 wherein the lever includes a front and a rear end; the lock bar being pivotally connected to the lever at a medial pivot located intermediate the front and rear ends.
- 17. The improved locking mechanism of claim 1 wherein the lock jaw is generally C-shaped and has a first end and a second end, the lock bar engaging the first end in the locked position of the lock jaw and the second end in the unlocked position of the lock jaw.
- 18. An improved locking mechanism for a fifth wheel assembly for a tractor-trailer truck, said truck having a tractor and a trailer; the trailer having a coupling plate with a downwardly extending kingpin; the tractor having the assembly mounted thereon; the assembly having a coupling plate for coupling with the trailer coupling plate; the assembly coupling plate including a pair of rearwardly projecting ramps separated by a kingpin-receiving gap having a blind port to receive the kingpin; the improved locking mechanism comprising:
a lever having a front end; a lock bar extending from the lever; a lock jaw retained by the lock bar in a locked position adjacent the blind port, but biased to move to an unlocked position when the lever is pivoted to move the lock bar to at least partially release the lock jaw from the lock bar, allowing the lock jaw to move; arid the assembly including a housing having an aperture formed therein through which a handle passes, the handle extending from adjacent the front end of the lever.
- 19. The improved locking mechanism of claim 18 wherein the aperture has unlocked and locked sections having different widths.
- 20. An improved locking mechanism for a fifth wheel assembly for a tractor-trailer truck, said truck having a tractor and a trailer; the trailer having a coupling plate with a downwardly extending kingpin; the tractor having the assembly mounted thereon; the assembly having a coupling plate for coupling with the trailer coupling plate; the assembly coupling plate including a pair of rearwardly projecting ramps separated by a kingpin-receiving gap having a blind port to receive the kingpin; the improved locking mechanism comprising:
a lever; a lock bar extending from the lever; a C-shaped lockjaw having first and second ends retained by the lock bar in a locked position adjacent the blind port, but biased to move to an unlocked position when the lever is pivoted to move the lock bar to at least partially release the lock jaw from the lock bar, allowing the lock jaw to move; and the lock bar engaging the lock jaw on the first end in the locked position and on the second end in the unlocked position.
