Claims
- 1. A carton opener comprising:
- a body member,
- a first guiding surface formed on said body member,
- a second guiding surface formed on said body member with said first and said second guiding surfaces forming an angle for guiding engagement with a carton in use,
- a blade member projecting from said first guiding surface and defining a plane and having a cutting edge, said body member having a curved portion disposed forward of said cutting edge,
- a blade guard pivotally connected to said body member for movement substantially parallel to one of said guiding surfaces and capable of a first position covering said blade member,
- locking means mounted on said body member and disposed to lock said blade guard in said first position, and a release button capable of releasing said blade guard.
- 2. A carton opener according to claim 1 in which said curved portion of said body member is convexly curved.
- 3. A carton opener according to claim 1 in which said body member has a top portion disposed above said blade member with said top portion generally flat.
- 4. A carton opener according to claim 1 in which said cutting edge of said blade member forms an acute angle with said first guiding surface.
- 5. A hand-held carton opener comprising:
- a body,
- a generally flat palm-engaging surface on a first side of said body engageable in use with the palm of a user's hand,
- a bearing surface projecting from said palm-engaging surface and receivable in use between the thumb and forefinger of a user's hand when the palm of the user's hand is engaged with the palm-engaging surface,
- first and second guide surfaces on a second side of said body opposite said first side with said guide surfaces intersecting at a predetermined angle, and
- a cutting blade projecting in use from one of said guide surfaces.
- 6. The carton opener of claim 5, and further comprising a finger-engaging surface extending between the first and second sides of the body.
- 7. The carton opener of claim 5, wherein said bearing surface is formed on a bearing wall substantially parabolic in shape.
- 8. The carton opener of claim 5, wherein said predetermined angle is substantially 90.degree..
- 9. The carton opener of claim 8, wherein said cutting blade lies in a plane which is inclined with respect to each of said first and second guide surfaces.
- 10. The carton opener of claim 5, wherein said body has an arcuately curved peripheral edge.
- 11. The carton opener of claim 5, wherein said body includes two body members fixedly secured together to form a two-part housing.
- 12. A carton opener comprising:
- a body,
- first and second guide surfaces formed on said body and intersecting at a predetermined angle for guiding engagement with a carton in use,
- a cutting blade projecting from said body and lying in a plane which intersects at least one of the guide surfaces, and
- a retractable blade guard carried by said body and movable substantially parallel to one of said guide surfaces between guarding and retracted positions,
- said blade guard in its guarding position projecting from said body and substantially covering said blade,
- said blade guard in its retracted position being withdrawn into said body for exposing said blade.
- 13. The carton opener of claim 12, and further comprising bias means carried by said body and coupled to said blade guard for resiliently urging it to its guarding position.
- 14. The carton opener of claim 12, and further comprising a lock mechanism carried by said body for locking said blade guard in its guarding position.
- 15. The carton opener of claim 14, wherein said lock mechanism includes a release mechanism for unlocking said blade guard and accommodating movement thereof between its guarding and retracted positions.
- 16. The carton opener of claim 15, wherein said release mechanism includes a push button engageable in use with a user's forefinger when said body is received in the palm of the user's hand.
- 17. The carton opener of claim 12, and further comprising a pivot coupled to said blade guard for accommodating pivotal movement thereof between its guarding and retracted positions.
