Claims
- 1. A cartridge feed mechanism for automatic firearms having one endless chain loop and at least one rotatable sprocket for supporting a portion of said chain loop for movement in one and in an opposite direction around said sprocket, an ejector cam provided for limited pivotal movement on an axis within said chain loop, said cam having an elongated shape with one end defining symmetrically sloped cartridge engageable faces, a deflection mechanism outside the chain loop and driven in synchronism with said sprocket and chain loop, one of said faces acting on cartridges moving around said sprocket to eject the cartridges from the chain into the deflection mechanism as said chain loop moves in one direction and the other of said cam faces acting on cartridges moving around said sprocket as said chain moves in an opposite direction to eject cartridges from the chain, said cam having opposed limit positions for so acting on cartridges moving in said one and said opposite chain directions.
- 2. The cartridge feed mechanism of claim 1 further characterized by means for restricting said cam to movement between opposed limit positions, said cam having a maximum width defining outer edges of said sloped cam faces, said chain loop having cup shaped cartridge receptacles, and said sprocket having outwardly open recesses for receiving said cup shaped cartridge receptacles, said cup shaped recesses defining a sprocket of such diameter that one of said outer edges of said cam faces projects into the path of said cartridge receptacles in said chain when said cam is in one limit position and the other said outer edge of said cam face projects into the path of said cartridge receptacles in said chain when said cam is in its opposite limit position.
- 3. The cartridge feed mechanism of claim 1 wherein said chain loop is entrained around approximately 180 degrees of said sprocket and defines a center reference plane containing said cam's axis of pivotal movement, said cam being moveable across said reference plane between opposed limit positions for so acting on the cartridges, said cam having a maximum width located in a diameter of said sprocket that is perpendicular said reference plane.
- 4. The cartridge feed mechanism of claim 2 wherein said chain loop is entrained around approximately 180 degrees of said sprocket and defines a center reference plane containing said cam's axis of pivotal movement, said cam being moveable across said reference plane between opposed limit positions for so acting on the cartridges, said cam having a maximum width located on a diameter of said sprocket that is perpendicular said reference plane.
- 5. The cartridge feed mechanism of claim 4 wherein said elongated cam has an end face defined between inner edges of said sloped cartridge engageable faces, means supporting said cam for movement on an axis spaced from the axis of rotation of said sprocket, and said cam axis of rotation spaced from said cam end face by a dimension at least approximately equal to the diameter of said sprocket.
