Claims
- 1. A cartridge for an active protection system comprising: a metal case; a first set of projectiles received within the case arranged in an outer ring; said first set of projectiles having flat sides and corner junctions; a second set of projectiles received within the case within the outer ring of the first set of projectiles; said second set of projectiles having generally curved outer surfaces; and means for launching the projectiles from the case to provide a dispersion angle by transverse force applied to the first set of flat sided projectiles by the second set of curved surfaced projectiles.
- 2. A cartridge as in claim 1 wherein the projectiles include a first set of generally cubical projectiles arranged in the outer ring and a second set of spherical projectiles located within the outer ring of cubical projectiles.
- 3. A cartridge as in claim 2 further including additional cubical projectiles that engage the spherical projectiles on the side thereof toward which the projectiles move upon launching.
- 4. A cartridge for an active protection system including a launch tube having a closed rear end and an open muzzle end, said cartridge comprising: a metal case that is inserted into the launch tube through the open muzzle end thereof to provide a liner therefor; said case having a closed rear end and an open muzzle end; a propellant received within the closed rear end of the case; a sabot slidably received within the case to seal the propellant within the closed rear end thereof; a plurality of projectiles received within the case of the opposite side of the sabot from the propellant; said projectiles including a first set of projectiles having flat sides and corner junctions and being arranged in an outer ring; said projectiles also including a second set of projectiles having generally curved outer surfaces and being located within the outer ring of the first set of projectiles; and an ignitor for igniting the propellant to force the sabot out of the case through the open muzzle end thereof to launch the projectiles and provide a dispersion angle by transverse force applied to the first set of flat sided projectiles by the second set of curved surfaced projectiles.
- 5. A cartridge for an active protection system including a launch tube having a closed rear end and an open muzzle end, said cartridge comprising: a metal case that is inserted into the launch tube through the open muzzle end thereof to provide a liner therefor; said case having a closed rear end and an open muzzle end; a propellant received within the closed rear end of the case; a sabot slidably received within the case to seal the propellant within the closed rear end thereof; a first set of generally cubical projectiles received within the case on the opposite side of the sabot from the propellant and arranged in an outer ring; a second set of generally spherical projectiles received within the outer ring of cubical projectiles; and an ignitor for igniting the propellant to force the sabot out of the case through the open muzzle end thereof to launch the projectiles and provide a dispersion angle by transverse force applied to the first set of cubical projectiles by the second set of spherical projectiles.
- 6. A cartridge as in claim 5 further including arcuate slides positioned between the outer ring of the cubical projectiles and the case.
- 7. A cartridge as in claim 5 or 6 wherein the sabot includes a metal face plate for engaging the projectiles.
- 8. A cartridge for an active protection system including a launch tube having a closed rear end and an open muzzle end, said cartridge comprising: a metal case that is inserted into the launch tube through the open muzzle end thereof to provide a liner therefor; said case having a closed rear end of a rounded shape; the case also having an open muzzle end including an outwardly projecting flange; a propellant received within the closed rear end of the case; a sabot slidably received within the case to seal the propellant within the closed rear end thereof; a first set of generally cubical projectiles received within the case on the opposite side of the sabot from the propellant and arranged in an outer ring; a second set of generally spherical projectiles received within the outer ring of cubical projectiles; arcuate slides positioned between the outer ring of cubical projectiles and the case; and an ignitor extending from the rounded rear end of the case into the propellant and being operable to ignite the propellant in order to force the sabot out of the case through the open muzzle end thereof to launch the projectiles and provide a dispersion angle by transverse force applied to the first set of cubical projectiles by the second set of spherical projectiles.
- 9. A cartridge for an active protection system including a launch tube having a closed rear end and an open muzzle end, said cartridge comprising: a metal case that is inserted into the launch tube through the open muzzle end thereof to provide a liner therefor; said case having a closed rear end of a rounded shape; the case also having an open muzzle end including an outwardly projecting flange; the case having a cylindrical inner surface and also having an outer surface that tapers inwardly from the open muzzle end toward the closed rear end; a propellant received within the closed rear end of the case; a sabot slidably received within the inner cylindrical surface of the case to seal the propellant within the closed rear end of the case; a metal face plate on the sabot on the opposite side thereof from the propellant; a first set of generally cubical projectiles received within the case and arranged in an outer ring in engagement with the metal face plate of the sabot; a second set of generally spherical projectiles received within the outer ring of cubical projectiles and engaged with the metal face plate of the sabot; arcuate slides positioned between the outer ring of cubical projectiles and the case; and an ignitor extending from the rounded rear end of the case into the propellant and being operable to ignite the propellant in order to force the sabot out of the case through the open muzzle end thereof to launch the projectiles and provide a dispersion angle by transverse force applied to the first set of cubical projectiles by the second set of spherical projectiles.
