Claims
- 1. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case, comprising:
a horizontal conveyor for moving the case into a sealing position adjacent to a vertical column; a platen carrier being vertically and rotationally movable relative to said column; a platen mounted to said platen carrier with said platen comprising a case heater; a receiver carrier being vertically movable relative to said column; a closure receiver mounted to said receiver carrier with said closure receiver having a closure retainer for retaining a closure thereby; platen carrier drive vertically and rotationally moving said platen carrier to locate said case heater for heating the case thereby; said platen carrier drive vertically and rotationally moving said platen carrier to relocate said case heater from heating the case; and receiver carrier drive for vertically moving said receiver carrier to position the closure into engagement with the case to heat seal the closure to the case.
- 2. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, including a base for supporting said vertical column; and
an adjuster interposed between said base and said vertical column for adjusting the vertical positions of said receiver carrier and said closure receiver relative to said horizontal conveyor for accommodating for a different size battery case.
- 3. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, including a base for supporting said vertical column; and
a jack interposed between said base and said vertical column for adjusting the vertical positions of said receiver carrier and said closure receiver relative to said horizontal conveyor for accommodating for a different size battery case.
- 4. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, wherein the battery case is a plastic battery case; and
said horizontal conveyor comprises a non-stick belt for inhibiting the accumulation of melted plastic on said non-stick belt.
- 5. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, wherein said platen is removably mounted to said platen carrier for enabling said platen to be changed for accommodating for a different size battery case.
- 6. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, wherein said closure receiver is removably mounted to said receiver carrier for enabling said closure receiver to be changed for accommodating for a different size battery case.
- 7. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, wherein said platen includes a closure heater; and
a thermal insulator disposed between said case heater and said closure heater for enabling said closure heater to be operated at a temperature independent of said case heater.
- 8. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, wherein said platen carrier drive comprises said platen carrier defining a first and a second end;
a first and a second seal disposed at said first and a second ends of said platen carrier for sealing with said column; an annular projection extending from said column and being located between said first and second seals for defining a first and a second platen chamber; an input and an output channel communicating with each of said first and second platen chambers; and a fluid pump for pumping a fluid through selective input and output channels for expanding one of said first and second platen chamber and for contracting the other of said first and second platen chamber for vertically moving said platen carrier relative to said column.
- 9. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, wherein said platen carrier drive comprises said platen carrier defining a first and a second end;
a first and a second seal disposed at said first and second ends of said platen carrier for sealing with said column; an annular projection extending from said column and being located between said first and second seals for defining a first and a second platen chamber; an input and an output channel communicating with each of said first and second platen chambers; a fluid pump for pumping a fluid through selective input and output channels for expanding one of said first and second platen chamber and for contracting the other of said first and second platen chamber for vertically moving said platen carrier relative to said column; and said input and output channels extending within said column.
- 10. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, wherein said closure retainer comprises a plurality of apertures defined in said closure receiver and communicating with a vacuum source for retaining a closure on said closure receiver.
- 11. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, including a closure feeder for sequentially introducing a plurality of closures to said closure receiver.
- 12. An improved apparatus for seating a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, including a closure feeder for sequentially introducing a plurality of closures to said closure receiver;
said closure feeder comprising a closure conveyor for moving said plurality of closures to a transfer arm; and said transfer arm sequentially transferring said plurality of closures to said closure receiver.
- 13. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 1, wherein said closure receiver is rotatably mounted to said receiver carrier with said closure receiver having a first and a second closure receiver portion disposed on opposed sides of closure receiver;
closure receiver rotating drive rotating said closure receiver to a first rotational position for enabling said first closure receiver portion to receive a first closure; and said closure receiver rotating drive rotating said closure receiver to a second rotational position for enabling said second closure receiver portion to receive a second closure.
- 14. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case, comprising:
a horizontal conveyor for moving the case into a sealing position adjacent to a vertical column; a platen carrier being vertically and rotationally movable relative to said column; a platen mounted to said platen carrier with said platen defining a case heater and a closure heater; a receiver carrier being vertically movable relative to said column; a closure receiver rotatably mounted to said receiver carrier with said closure receiver having a closure retainer for retaining a closure thereby; said closure receiver having a first and a second closure receiver portion disposed on opposed sides of closure receiver; closure receiver rotating drive rotating said closure receiver to a first rotational position for enabling said first closure receiver portion to receive a first closure; said closure receiver rotating drive rotating said closure receiver to a second rotational position for enabling said second closure receiver portion to receive a second closure; platen carrier drive vertically and rotationally moving said platen carrier to locate said case heater into engagement with the case for heating the case thereby; receiver carrier drive vertically moving said receiver carrier to locate the closure into engagement with the closure heater for heating the case thereby; said receiver carrier drive vertically moving said receiver carrier to locate the closure out of engagement with the closure heater; said platen carrier drive vertically and rotationally moving said platen carrier to relocate said case heater from heating the case; and said receiver carrier drive for vertically moving said receiver carrier to position the closure into engagement with the case to heat seal the closure to the case.
- 15. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case, comprising:
a base for supporting a vertical column; a horizontal conveyor for moving the case into a sealing position adjacent to a vertical column; an adjuster interposed between said base and said vertical column for adjusting the vertical position of said vertical column relative to said horizontal conveyor; a platen carrier being vertically and rotationally movable relative to said column; a platen mounted to said platen carrier with said platen comprising a case heater and a closure heater; a receiver carrier being vertically movable relative to said column; a closure receiver mounted to said receiver carrier with said closure receiver having a closure retainer for retaining a closure thereby; said closure receiver being rotatably mounted to said receiver carrier with said closure receiver having a first and a second closure receiver portion disposed on opposed sides of closure receiver; closure receiver rotating drive rotating said closure receiver to a first rotational position for enabling said first closure receiver portion to receive a first closure; said closure receiver rotating drive rotating said closure receiver to a second rotational position for enabling said second closure receiver portion to receive a second closure; platen carrier drive vertically and rotationally moving said platen carrier to locate said case heater for heating the case thereby; said platen carrier drive vertically and rotationally moving said platen carrier to relocate said case heater from heating the case; and receiver carrier drive for vertically moving said receiver carrier to position the closure into engagement with the case to heat seal the closure to the case.
- 16. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 15, including a closure feeder for sequentially introducing a plurality of closures to said closure receiver.
- 17. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 15, including a closure feeder for sequentially introducing a plurality of closures to said closure receiver;
said closure feeder comprising a closure conveyor for moving said plurality of closures to a transfer arm; and said transfer arm sequentially transferring said plurality of closures to said closure receiver.
- 18. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case, comprising:
a base for supporting a vertical column; a horizontal conveyor for moving the case into a sealing position adjacent to said vertical column; a platen carrier being vertically movable relative to said column between a first and a second vertical position; said platen carrier being rotationally movable relative to said column between a first and a second rotary position; a platen mounted to said platen carrier with said platen comprising a case heater and a closure heater; a receiver carrier being vertically movable relative to said column between a third and a fourth vertical position; a closure receiver rotatably mounted to said receiver carrier with said closure receiver having a first and a second closure receiver portion disposed on opposed sides of closure receiver; closure receiver rotating drive rotating said closure receiver to a first rotational position for enabling said first closure receiver portion to receive a first closure; said closure receiver rotating drive rotating said closure receiver to a second rotational position for enabling said second closure receiver portion to receive a second closure; platen carrier drive moving said platen, carrier from said first vertical position into said second vertical position whereat said case heater heats the case; receiver carrier drive vertically moving said receiver carrier from said third vertical position into said fourth vertical position to locate the closure into engagement with the closure heater for heating the case thereby; said receiver carrier drive vertically moving said receiver carrier from said fourth vertical position into said third vertical position to locate the closure out of engagement with the closure heater; said platen carrier drive moving said platen carrier from said second vertical position into said first vertical position; and platen carrier rotating drive for rotating said platen carrier from said first rotary position to said second rotary position for enabling said receiver carrier drive to move said receiver carrier from said third vertical position into said fourth vertical position for positioning the closure on the case to enable the closure to be heat sealed to the case.
- 19. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 18, wherein said first case receiver portion faces upwardly to receive a closure therein in said first rotational position whereat.
- 20. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 18, wherein said first case receiver portion faces downwardly and said second case receiver faces upwardly to receive a closure therein in said second rotational position.
- 21. An apparatus for moving a carrier with fluid pressure, comprising:
a shaft having an annular piston extending from said shaft; a carrier drive for driving the carrier; said carrier drive comprising a cylindrical barrel extending between a first and a second end member; said cylindrical barrel being in sealing engagement with said annular piston with said first and second end members being located on opposed sides of said annular piston; a first and a second seal coacting between said first and second end members and said shaft for defining a first and a second chamber; a first and a second channel extending through said shaft to communicate with said first and second chambers, respectively; a valve system for connecting the fluid pressure to said first and second channels for enabling said first chamber to expand upon the introduction of fluid pressure into said first chamber for moving said carrier drive in a first direction relative to said shaft; and said valve system enabling said second chamber to expand upon the introduction of fluid pressure into said second chamber for moving said carrier drive in a second direction relative to said shaft.
- 22. An apparatus for moving a carrier with fluid pressure as set forth in claim 21, wherein said shaft is disposed in a generally vertical orientation.
- 23. An apparatus for moving a carrier with fluid pressure as set forth in claim 21, wherein said shaft is disposed in a generally horizontal orientation.
- 24. An apparatus for moving a carrier with fluid pressure as set forth in claim 21, including adjustment means for adjusting the position of said shaft.
- 25. An apparatus for moving a carrier with fluid pressure as set forth in claim 21, wherein said first and second seals are O-ring seals.
- 26. An apparatus for moving a carrier with fluid pressure as set forth in claim 21, wherein said carrier drive is rotatably mounted on said shaft.
- 27. An apparatus for moving a carrier with fluid pressure as set forth in claim 21, wherein said carrier drive is rotatably mounted on said shaft;
a carrier drive gear mounted relative to said carrier drive; and a drive gear cooperating with said carrier drive gear for rotating said carrier drive on said shaft.
- 28. An apparatus for moving a carrier with fluid pressure as set forth in claim 21, wherein said carrier drive is rotatably mounted on said shaft;
a carrier drive gear mounted relative to said carrier drive; a drive gear cooperating with said carrier drive gear for rotating said carrier drive on said shaft; and said drive gear being elongated for cooperating with said carrier drive gear independent of the position of said carrier drive relative to said shaft.
- 29. A case stop for stopping and positioning a battery case on a support, comprising:
a stop frame being movably mounted relative to the support; a major and a minor case stop located on said stop frame; said major case stop initially positioning the battery case upon initial movement of said stop frame; and said minor case stop subsequently positioning the battery case upon continued movement of said stop frame.
- 30. A case stop for a battery case as set forth in claim 29, wherein said support is a moving conveyor;
a spacer stop secured to said stop frame for spacing a subsequent battery case moving on said conveyor relative to the battery case.
- 31. A case stop for a battery case as set forth in claim 29, wherein said stop frame is pivotably mounted relative to the support.
- 32. A case stop for a battery case as set forth in claim 29, wherein said major case stop is larger than said minor case stop for enabling said major case stop to initially position the battery case upon initial movement of said stop frame.
- 33. A case stop for a battery case as set forth in claim 29, wherein said major case stop and said minor case stop engage opposed sides of the battery case; and
said minor case stop being adjustable for accommodating a different size battery case.
- 34. The method of heating a battery case with a case heater, comprising:
rapidly relatively moving the case heater and the battery case into mutual engagement; and slowly relatively moving the case heater and the heated battery case a predetermined distance to melt the battery case a predetermined distance.
- 35. The method of heating a battery case with a case heater comprising:
rapidly moving the case heater toward the battery case; sensing the engagement of the case heater with the battery case; and slowly moving the case heater a predetermined distance to melt the battery case the aforesaid predetermined distance.
- 36. The method of heating a battery case, with a case heater as set forth in claim 35, wherein the step of sensing the engagement of the case heater with the battery case includes a fluid pressure sensor.
- 37. A conveyor system for sequentially moving a plurality of flat battery components, comprising:
a conveyor having a plurality of separators for receiving a flat battery component between each of adjacent separators; said conveyor supporting an end of each of said flat battery components with each of said plurality of said flat battery components being maintained on end by said plurality of separators; and a motor drive for moving said conveyor for moving the plurality of flat battery components thereby.
- 38. A conveyor system for sequentially moving a plurality of flat battery components as set forth in claim 37, wherein said conveyor is an endless flexible conveyor.
- 39. A conveyor system for sequentially moving a plurality of flat battery components as set forth in claim 37, wherein each of said plurality of separators extend outward of said conveyor.
- 40. A conveyor system for sequentially moving a plurality of flat battery components as set forth in claim 37, wherein said motor drive is an indexable motor drive for indexing said conveyor.
- 41. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case, comprising:
a horizontal conveyor for moving the case into a sealing position adjacent to a vertical column; a platen carrier being vertically and rotationally movable relative to said column, a platen mounted to said platen carrier with said platen comprising a case sealer; a receiver carrier being vertically movable relative to said column; a closure receiver mounted to said receiver carrier with said closure receiver having a closure retainer for retaining a closure thereby; platen carrier drive vertically and rotationally moving said platen carrier to locate said case sealing into engagement with the case; said platen carrier drive vertically and rotationally moving said platen carrier to relocate said case sealer from engagement with the case; and receiver carrier drive for vertically moving said receiver carrier to position the closure into engagement with the case to seal the closure to the case.
- 42. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 41 wherein said case sealer is a solvent based case sealer.
- 43. An improved apparatus for sealing a battery case closure to a battery case as set forth in claim 41 wherein said case sealer is an ultrasonic case sealer.
