Claims

- regular message recording means selectively operable for seizure and subsequent recording of dictated messages from said dictate station;
- priority message recording means, including substitution means carrying a plurality of discrete recording members for substituting a second discrete recording member for a first discrete recording member in recording interrelationship with said priority message recording means, said priority message recording means being selectively operable for seizure, subsequent recording of dictated messages from said dictate station, and substitution of said second discrete recording member for said first discrete recording member;
- control switch means associated with said dictate station and selectively operative to provide a priority signal condition corresponding to desired selection of said priority message recording means;
- switching means operatively interconnected to control circuit means;
- said control circuit means being operatively interconnected with said control switch means for generating a first switching signal condition in the absence of said priority signal condition or a second switching signal condition in the presence of said priority signal condition;
- said first switching signal condition causing said switching means to assume a first state placing said dictate station in operative relation only with said regular message recording means;
- said second switching signal condition causing said switching means to assume a second state placing said dictate station in operative relation only with said priority message recording means; and
- said control circuit means being operative in response to termination of seizure of said priority message recording means to restore said first switching signal condition, thereby causing said switching means to reassume said first state placing said dictate station in operative relation only with said regular message recording means.
- 2. Apparatus as in claim 1, wherein:
- said priority message recording means includes a status circuit providing an availability signal condition when said priority message recording means is available for seizure and a busy signal condition when said priority message recording means is unavailable for seizure;
- said control circuit means includes latch circuit means operative in response to the concurrent presence of a busy signal condition on said status circuit and a priority signal condition provided by said control switch means to provide said switching means with a holding signal condition maintaining said switching means in the second state irrespective of the subsequent termination of said priority signal condition from said control switch means; and
- said latch circuit means being operative in response to the termination of said busy signal condition and the appearance of said availability signal condition to terminate said holding second switching signal condition.
- 3. Apparatus as in claim 1, including signal means associated with said dictate station and operative in response to said holding signal condition to provide a signal indicating seizure of said priority message recording means.
- 4. Apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said substitution means of said priority message recording means is operative in response to the termination of seizure of said priority message recording means by said dictate station to substitute said second discrete recording member for said first discrete recording member in recording interrelationship with said priority message recording means.
- 5. Apparatus as in claim 1 wherein:
- said discrete record member associated with said priority message recording means includes a recording medium upon which first and second message recording positions may be defined;
- said second position being the point on said recording medium at which the last dictation signal from said dictate station is recorded;
- said priority message recording means comprises forward reset means operative in response to the termination of seizure for moving said recording medium to return to said second position on said recording medium after said recording medium has been moved to a first position where prior dictation signals are recorded; and
- wherein said substitution means of said priority message recording means is operative to perform said substitution of record members in response to the return of said recording medium to said second position in the absence of seizure of said priority message recording means by said dictate station.
- 6. Message recording apparatus for selectively recording either regular or priority message, comprising:
- message dictate station; regular message
- recording means selectively operable for seizure and subsequent recording of dictated message from said dictate station;
- hook switch means associated with said dictate station and selectively operative to provide an on-hook signal condition or an off-hook signal condition;
- priority message recording means including substitution means carrying a plurality of discrete recording members for substituting a second discrete recording member for a first discrete recording member in recording interrelationship with said priority message recording means, said priority message recording means being selectively operable for seizure, subsequent recording of dictated messages from said dictate station, and substitution of said second discrete recording member for said first discrete recording member;
- control switch means associated with said dictate station and selectively operative to provide a priority signal condition corresponding to desired selection of said priority message recording means;
- available signal generating means associated with said priority message recording means for generating an available signal condition when said priority message recording means is available for seizure and a busy signal condition when said priority message recording means is seized by a dictate station;
- switching means operatively interconnected to control circuit means;
- said control circuit means being operatively interconnected with said control switch means, said hook switch means, and said available signal generating means;
- said control circuit means generating a first switching signal condition or a second switching signal condition;
- said first switching signal condition causing said switching means to assume a first state placing said dictate station in operative relation only with said regular message recording means, and said second switching signal condition causing said switching means to assume a second state placing said dictate station in operative relation only with said priority message recording means;
- said control circuit means being operative to transfer from said first switching signal condition to said second switching signal condition only in the concurrent presence of said available signal condition and said priority switching condition;
- said control circuit means being responsive to the concurrent presence of said second switching signal condition and said busy signal condition resulting from seizure of said priority recording means to maintain said second switching signal condition irrespective of the presence or absence of said priority signal condition; and
- said control circuit means being responsive to the concurrent presence of said second switching signal condition and said on-hook signal condition to restore said first switching signal condition.
