Claims
- 1. A cassette for light-sensitive web material, comprising:
- a hollow cassette housing having an exit slit;
- means within said housing for rotatably supporting a roll of light-sensitive web material;
- a roll of light-sensitive web material mounted on said means for rotatably supporting;
- means for engaging a leading end of said web material from said roll to drive said web material through said exit;
- means for sending signals to a first associated apparatus which will receive said web material from said cassette;
- means for measuring a condition of said cassette, or said web material, or both and for producing at least one signal; and
- means responsive to said at least one signal for disabling said means for sending signals when said measured condition is determined to be or to have been at or beyond a predetermined limit.
- 2. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein said signals are sent optically, electrically or magnetically.
- 3. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein said measured condition is temperature within said cassette.
- 4. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein said measured condition is humidity within said cassette.
- 5. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein said measured condition is presence of light within said cassette.
- 6. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein said measured condition is length of web material remaining within said cassette.
- 7. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein said measured condition is time since said web material was placed in said cassette.
- 8. A cassette according to claim 1, further comprising means for receiving signals from an associated apparatus which will input a reset code to said cassette to re-enable said means for sending signals and thereby permit continued use of said cassette.
- 9. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein said means for sending signals is adapted to be set to communicate information about characteristics of said web material.
- 10. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein said measured condition is removal of said roll of web material from said cassette.
- 11. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein said measured condition is opening of said hollow cassette housing.
- 12. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein said means for sending signals is adapted to be set to communicate information about an expiration date for the roll of web material.
- 13. A cassette according to claim 1, wherein said means for engaging is located within said housing.
- 14. A method for controlling reuse of a cassette for light-sensitive web material, the cassette including a hollow cassette housing having an exit slit; means within the housing for rotatably supporting a roll of light-sensitive web material; a roll of light-sensitive web material mounted on the means for rotatably supporting; means for sending signals to a first associated apparatus which will receive web material from the cassette; and means for engaging a leading end of a web material from the roll to drive the web material through the exit slit, said method comprising steps of:
- measuring a condition of said cassette and producing at least one signal when said measured condition is determined to be or to have been at or beyond a predetermined limit;
- in response to said at least one signal, disabling said means for sending signals to prevent unauthorized reuse of said cassette; and
- inputting a reset code to said cassette to re-enable said means for sending signals to permit authorized reuse of said cassette.
- 15. A method according to claim 14, further comprising steps of:
- communicating an identifier code from said cassette before said inputting step; and
- selecting said reset code to be one corresponding to said identifier code.
