Claims
- 1. A method for casting metal strip comprising the steps of:
- (a) depositing a stream of molten metal onto a quenching region of a quench surface to form a strip;
- (b) supplying a reducing gas to a depletion region of the quench surface located adjacent to and upstream from said quenching region;
- (c) reacting said reducing gas exothermically to provide an atmosphere within said depletion region having a density of less than about 1 g/liter.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the density of the atmosphere in the depletion region is less than about 0.5 g/liter.
- 3. A method as recited in claim 1, further comprising the step of igniting said reducing gas to produce a reducing flame atmosphere within said depletion region.
- 4. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said reducing gas is composed of carbon monoxide.
- 5. A method as recited in claim 1, further comprising the step of providing an additional low density reducing atmosphere along a portion of said strip.
- 6. A method as recited in claim 1, further comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing an additional low density, reducing atmosphere composed of carbon monoxide gas along a portion of said strip; and
- (b) igniting said carbon monoxide as to provide a reducing flame atmosphere along said strip portion.
- 7. A method as recited in claim 1, further comprising the step of entraining said strip against said quench surface to prolong contact therewith.
