Claims
- 1. A process for the polymerization of olefins which comprises homopolymerizing an olefin or copolymerizing ethylene with an alpha-olefin or copolymerizing at least two different alpha-olefins in the presence of a catalyst system comprising:
- (1) a titanium based catalyst component obtained by
- (i) reacting (A) Mg(OR)(OR') with (B) a silicon compound having at least one silicon-hydrogen bond,
- (ii) contacting the reaction product with (C) an electron donor compound,
- (iii) contacting the resulting contact product two or more times with (D) a titanium halide, and,
- (iv) between at least one of the multiple titanium halide contacts, contacting the titanium halide contacted solid with a halogenated hydrocarbon, wherein R and R' are radicals selected from alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, and aralkyl radicals and R and R' may be the same or different;
- (2) an organoaluminum cocatalyst.
- 2. The process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the reaction product obtained from step (iii) is contacted with the titanium halide two times and the halogenated hydrocarbon employed between the two titanium halide contact steps is one of hexachloroethane, hexachlorobenzene, monochlorobenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, carbontetrachloride and tribromobenzene.
- 3. The process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the electron donor compound is one of carboxylic acids esters, carboxylic acid anhydrides, carboxylic acid halides, alcohols and esters.
- 4. The process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the titanium halide is titanium tetrachloride.
- 5. The process in accordance with claim 4 wherein R and R' are alkyl radicals having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, the silicon compound is a hydrosilane, the electron donor is an alkyl ester of an aromatic carboxylic acid and the halogenated hydrocarbon is hexachloroethane.
- 6. The process in accordance with claim 5 wherein R and R' are ethyl.
- 7. The process in accordance with claim 6 wherein the hydrosilane is trichlorosilane.
