Claims
- 1. A process for the polymerization of olefins comprising contacting at least one olefin monomer with a catalyst composition comprising
- (a) a polymer having incorporated into its structure metallocene complex of general formula I or II ##STR2## wherein R is a monovalent or divalent 1-20C hydrocarbyl group, or a 1-20C hydrocarbyl group containing substituent oxygen, silicon, phosphorus, nitrogen or boron atoms with the proviso that at least one R group contains a polymerisable olefinic group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, and when there are two R groups present, they may be the same or different, and when R is divalent it is directly attached to M, and replaces a Y ligand, wherein
- X is cyclopentadienyl or indenyl,
- M is a Group IVA metal,
- Y is a monovalent anionic ligand, and
- for formula I,
- n is an integer of 1 to 10
- x is either 1 or 2, and
- when x=1, p=0-3,
- when x=2, p=0-2, and
- for formula II,
- n and m are integers or 0 such that n+m.gtoreq.1, p=0-2, and
- z is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkylene radical or a dialkyl germanium or silicon or an alkyl phosphine or amine radical or bis-dialkylsilyl or dialkylgermanyl containing hydrocarbyl groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms bridging said cyclopentadienyl or indenyl group
- and
- (b) cocatalyst.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polymer-containing metallocene complex is prepared by contacting the metallocene complex and the olefin in the presence of an inert solvent and/or a co-catalyst.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein the designation X is a cyclopentadienyl nucleus.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polymerizable olefinic group is propene or butene.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein the catalyst composition is bis-(3-butenylcyclopentadienyl) zirconium dichloride.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 wherein the catalyst composition is bis-(3-butenylcyclopentadienyl zirconium dichloride.
- 7. A process according to claim 1 wherein the catalyst composition is bis-(3-propenylcyclopentadienyl) zirconium dichloride.
- 8. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polymer-containing metallocene complex comprises at least one olefin and at least one polymer-containing metallocene complex.
- 9. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polymer-containing metallocene complex is impregnated on an inorganic support.
- 10. A process according to claim 1 wherein the cocatalyst is an organoaluminum compound.
- 11. A process according to claim 1 wherein the cocatalyst is an aluminoxane.
- 12. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polymerisation is carried out in the gas phase.
- 13. A process according to claim 1 wherein the olefin monomer is ethylene.
