Claims
- 1. A composition of matter comprising, in intimate admixture, a major amount of solid particles capable of promoting hydrocarbon conversion at hydrocarbon conversion conditions, said solid particles including at least one crystalline aluminosilicate capable of promoting said hydrocarbon conversion, and a minor amount of discrete entities having a composition different from said solid particles and comprising at least one metal-containing spinel including alkaline earth metal and a second metal having a valence higher than the valence of said alkaline earth metal, the aromatic ratio of said alkaline earth metal to said second metal in said spinel being at least about 0.25 and said spinel having a surface area in the range of about 25 m.sup.2 /gm. to about 600 m.sup.2 /gm., and at least one rare earth metal component associated with said spinel.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbon conversion comprises hydrocarbon cracking in the substantial absence of added molecular hydrogen and a major amount, by weight of said solid particles have diameters in the range of about 10 microns to about 250 microns.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein said discrete entities contains at least about 70% by weight of said spinel.
- 4. The composition of claim 2 wherein at least one of said solid particles and discrete entities further comprise a minor, catalytically effective amount of at least one additional metal component capable of promoting the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide.
- 5. The composition of claim 4 wherein said additional metal component is at least one platinum group metal component.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 7. The composition of claim 2 wherein said spinel includes magnesium and aluminum, the atomic ratio of magnesium to aluminum in said spinel is in the range of about 0.25 to about 0.75 and said discrete entities comprise a major amount of said spinel.
- 8. The composition of claim 2 wherein said solid particles are separate from said discrete entities, said discrete entities comprise a major amount of said spinel, and the relative amounts of said solid particles and said discrete entities are in the range of about 80 parts to about 99 parts and about 1 part to about 20 parts by weight, respectively.
- 9. The composition of claim 1 wherein said spinel includes magnesium and aluminum, the atomic ratio of magnesium to aluminum in said spinel is in the range of about 0.35 to about 0.65 and said rare earth metal component is present in an amount of about 1% to about 25% by weight of said discrete entities.
- 10. The composition of claim 2 wherein said discrete entities contain at least about 90% by weight of said spinel.
- 11. The composition of claim 2 wherein said discrete entities further comprise at least one platinum group metal component in an amount of about 0.05 ppm. to about 1% by weight of said discrete entities, calculated as elemental metal, said platinum group metal component being capable of promoting the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide.
- 12. The composition of claim 9 wherein said discrete entities further comprise at least one platinum group metal component in an amount of about 0.05 ppm. to about 1% by weight of said discrete entities, calculated as elemental metal, said platinum group metal component being capable of promoting the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide.
- 13. The composition of claim 8 wherein at least one of said solid particles and discrete entities further comprise a minor, catalytically effective amount of at least one additional metal component capable of promoting the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide.
- 14. The composition of claim 8 wherein said spinel includes magnesium and aluminum and the atomic ratio of magnesium to aluminum in said spinel is in the range of about 0.45 to about 0.55.
- 15. The composition of claim 2 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 16. The composition of claim 7 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 17. The composition of claim 9 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 18. The composition of claim 14 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 19. The composition of claim 9 wherein said spinel has a surface area in the range of about 40 m.sup.2 /gm. to about 400 m.sup.2 /gm.
- 20. The composition of claim 10 wherein said spinel has a surface area in the range of about 50 m.sup.2 /gm. to about 300 m.sup.2 /gm.
- 21. The composition of claim 2 wherein said solid particles and said discrete entities are both present in combined particles.
- 22. The composition of claim 1 wherein said rare earth metal component is at least one cerium component.
- 23. The composition of claim 9 wherein said rare earth metal component is at least one cerium component.
- 24. A composition of matter comprising, in intimate admixture, a major amount of solid particles capable of promoting hydrocarbon conversion at hydrocarbon conversion conditions, said solid particles including at least one crystalline aluminosilicate capable of promoting said hydrocarbon conversion, and a minor amount of discrete entities having a composition different from said solid particles and comprising a major amount by weight of at least one alkaline earth metal-containing spiral including alkaline earth metal and a second metal having a valence higher than the valence of said alkaline earth metal, the atomic ratio of said alkaline earth metal to said second metal in said spinel being at least about 0.25, and at least one rare earth metal component associated with said spinel.
- 25. The composition of claim 24 wherein said hydrocarbon conversion comprises hydrocarbon cracking in the substantial absence of added molecular hydrogen and a major amount, by weight of said solid particles have diameters in the range of about 10 microns to about 250 microns.
- 26. The composition of claim 25 wherein at least one of said solid particles and discrete entities further comprise a minor, catalytically effective amount of at least one additional metal component capable of promoting the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide.
- 27. The composition of claim 26 wherein said additional metal component is at least one platinum group metal component.
- 28. The composition of claim 24 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1 to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 29. The composition of claim 25 wherein said spinel includes magnesium and aluminum, and the atomic ratio of magnesium to aluminum in said spinel is in the range of about 0.25 to about 0.75.
- 30. The composition of claim 25 wherein said solid particles are separate from said discrete entities and the relative amounts of said solid particles and said discrete entities are in the range of about 80 parts to about 99 parts and about 1 part to about 20 parts by weight, respectively.
- 31. The composition of claim 24 wherein said spinel includes magnesium and aluminum, the atomic ratio of magnesium to aluminum in said spinel is in the range of about 0.35 to about 0.65 and said rare earth metal component is present in an amount of about 1% to about 25% by weight of said discrete entites.
- 32. The composition of claim 25 wherein said discrete entites contain at least about 90% by weight of said spinel.
- 33. The composition of claim 25 wherein said discrete entities further comprise at least one platinum group metal component in an amount of about 0.05 ppm. to about 1% by weight of said discrete entities, calculated as elemental metal, said platinum group metal component being capable of promoting the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide.
- 34. The composition of claim 31 wherein said discrete entities further comprise at least one platinum group metal component in an amount of about 0.05 ppm. to about 1% by weight of said discrete entities, calculated as elemental metal, said platinum group metal component being capable of promoting the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide.
- 35. The composition of claim 30 wherein at least one of said solid particles and discrete entities further comprise a minor, catalytically effective amount of at least one additional metal component capable of promoting the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide.
- 36. The composition of claim 30 wherein said spinel includes magnesium and aluminum and the atomic ratio of magnesium to aluminum in said spinel is in the range of about 0.45 to about 0.55.
- 37. The composition of claim 25 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 38. The composition of claim 29 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 39. The composition of claim 31 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 40. The composition of claim 36 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 41. The composition of claim 25 wherein said solid particles and said discrete entities are both present in combined particles.
- 42. The composition of claim 24 wherein said spinel has a surface area in the range of about 40 m.sup.2 /gm. to about 400 m.sup.2 /gm.
- 43. The composition of claim 30 wherein said spinel has a surface area in the range of about 50 m.sup.2 /gm. to about 300 m.sup.2 /gm.
- 44. The composition of claim 24 wherein said rare earth metal component is at least one cerium component.
- 45. The composition of claim 31 wherein said rare metal component is at least one cerium component.
- 46. A composition of matter comprising a major amount of at least one alkaline-earth metal-containing spinel including an alkaline earth metal and a second metal having a valence higher than the valence of said alkaline earth metal, the atomic ratio of said alkaline earth metal to said second metal in said spinel being at least about 0.17, said spinel having a surface area in the range of about 25 m..sup.2 /gm. to about 600 m..sup.2 /gm., and a minor amount of at least one rare earth metal component associated with said spinel.
- 47. The composition of claim 48 wherein said composition of matter comprises discrete entities having diameters in the range of about 10 microns to about 250 microns.
- 48. The composition of claim 47 wherein said discrete entities contain at least about 70% by weight of said spinel.
- 49. The composition of claim 46 which further comprises about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 50. The composition of claim 46 wherein said alkaline earth metal is magnesium and said second metal is aluminum and the atomic ratio of said magnesium to said aluminum in said spinel is at least about 0.25.
- 51. The composition of claim 46 wherein said spinel includes magnesium and aluminum, and the atomic ratio of magnesium to aluminum in said spinel is in the range of about 0.25 to about 0.75.
- 52. The composition of claim 46 wherein said spinel includes magnesium and aluminum, and the atomic ratio of magnesium to aluminum in said spinel is in the range of about 0.35 to about 0.65.
- 53. The composition of claim 46 wherein said spinel includes magnesium and aluminum, and the atomic ratio of magnesium to aluminum in said spinel is in the range of about 0.45 to about 0.55.
- 54. The composition of claim 47 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 55. The composition of claim 50 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 56. The composition of claim 52 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 57. The composition of claim 53 wherein said discrete entities further comprise about 0.1% to about 25% by weight of free magnesia, calculated as MgO.
- 58. The composition of claim 46 wherein said rare earth metal component is present in an amount in the range of about 1% to about 25% by weight of said composition.
- 59. The composition of claim 47 wherein said rare earth metal component is present in an amount in the range of about 1% to about 25% by weight of said composition.
- 60. The composition of claim 50 wherein said rare earth metal component is at least one cerium component.
- 61. The composition of claim 58 wherein said rare earth metal component is at least one cerium component.
- 62. The composition of claim 59 wherein said rare earth metal component is at least one cerium component.
