Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a catalyst for obtaining β-hydroxy and/or α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds from at least one aldehyde or at least one ketone, provided that the β-hydroxy carbonyl compound is not diacetone alcohol, comprising:calcining hydrotalcite to form a double oxide comprising Mg1−xAlxO1+x, hydrating the double oxide in the absence of CO2 to form a hydrated double oxide of general formula (I): [(Mg2+)1−x(Al3+)x(OH−)2]x+[(OH−)x]x−(H2O)n (I) wherein 0.20≦x≦0.33 and n<1, and rinsing the hydrated double oxide with a water-miscible solvent.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the water-miscible solvent is acetone.
- 3. The process of claim 1, wherein n in formula (I) is from about 0.48 to about 0.75.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein n in formula (I) is from about 0.48 to about 0.61.
- 5. The process of claim 1, wherein n in formula (I) is about 0.5.
- 6. The process of claim 1, wherein x in formula (I) is about 0.25.
- 7. The process of claim 1, wherein the catalyst is a meixnerite of formula:[(Mg2+)0.75(Al3+)0.25(OH−)2]0.25+[(OH−)0.25]0.25−(H2O)0.5.
- 8. The process of claim 1, wherein x in formula (I) is 0.3077.
- 9. The process of claim 8, wherein the catalyst has a crystal structure of meixnerite.
- 10. The process of claim 8, wherein the catalyst has a crystal structure of hydrotalcite.
- 11. The process of claim 1, wherein the double oxide comprising Mg1−xAlxO1+x has an x value from about 0.2 to about 0.33.
- 12. The process of claim 1, wherein the double oxide comprising Mg1−xAlxO1+x has an x value about 0.3.
- 13. The catalyst for obtaining β-hydroxy and/or α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds from at least one aldehyde or at least one ketone, of general formula (I):[(Mg2+)1−x(Al3+)x(OH−)2]x+[(OH−)x]x−(H2O)n (I) wherein 0.20≦x≦0.33 and n<1, that is prepared by the process of claim 1.
- 14. The catalyst prepared according to the process of claim 2.
- 15. The catalyst of claim 13, wherein n in formula (I) is from about 0.48 to about 0.75.
