Claims
- 1. In a process for homopolymerizing ethylene, or copolymerizing ethylene with one or more alpha olefins containing from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, with a catalyst system comprising
- (A) a solid catalyst precursor consisting essentially of
- (1) a solid, particulate, porous, inorganic carrier, as support for
- (2) the reaction product of (a) a vanadium trihalide and (b) an electron donor, and
- (3) a boron halide or alkylaluminum modifier,
- (B) an alkylaluminum cocatalyst, and
- (C) a halohydrocarbon polymerization promoter,
- the improvement which comprises treating solid catalyst precursor (A) with a phosphorus-containing molecular weight distribution regulator having the formula
- R.sub.3 P=O
- wherein:
- R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical free of aliphatic unsaturation containing from 1 to 14 carbon atoms, or ORl wherein R.sup.1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical free of aliphatic unsaturation containing from 1 to 14 carbon atoms.
- 2. A process as in claim 1 wherein R and R.sup.1 are alkyl radicals containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or aryl radicals containing 6 carbon atoms.
- 3. A process as in claim 2 wherein the phosphorus-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is a phosphine oxide.
- 4. A process as in claim 3 wherein the phosphorus-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is tributylphosphine oxide.
- 5. A process catalyst precursor as in claim 2 wherein the phosphorus-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is a phosphate.
- 6. A process catalyst precursor as in claim 5 wherein the phosphorus-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is triethyl phosphate.
