Claims
- 1. In a process for homopolymerizing ethylene, or copolymerizing ethylene with one or more alpha olefins containing from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, with a catalyst system comprising
- (A) a solid catalyst precursor consisting essentially of
- (1) a solid, particulate, porous, inorganic carrier, as support for
- (2) the reaction product of (a) a vanadium trihalide and (b) an electron donor, and
- (3) a boron halide or alkylaluminum modifier,
- (B) an alkylaluminum cocatalyst, and
- (C) a halohydrocarbon polymerization promoter,
- the improvement which comprises treating solid catalyst precursor (A) with an oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator selected from the group consisting of compounds having the formulas
- A--R--B and R.sup.1 --B
- wherein:
- R is a divalent hydrocarbon radical free of aliphatic unsaturation containing from 1 to 14 carbon atoms,
- R.sup.1 is a heterocyclic ring free of aliphatic unsaturation containing from 2 to 14 carbon atoms and at least one oxygen or nitrogen atom, and
- A and B are each selected from the group consisting of:
- --OH, --R.sup.1, --OR.sup.2, COOR.sup.2, --NR.sup.3 R.sup.4
- and
- wherein:
- R.sup.1 is as defined above,
- R.sup.2 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical free of aliphatic unsaturation containing from 1 to 14 carbon atoms, and
- R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are individually hydrogen or monovalent hydrocarbon radicals free of aliphatic unsaturation containing from 1 to 14 carbon atoms,
- with the proviso that at least one of A and B must be --OH or --COOR.sup.2, but both A and B cannot be --OH.
- 2. A process as in claim 1 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 3. A process as in claim 1 wherein:
- R is an alkylene radical containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an arylene radical containing 6 carbon atoms,
- R.sup.1 is a heterocyclic ring which contains from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and one oxygen or one nitrogen atom, and
- R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are alkyl radicals containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or aryl radicals containing 6 carbon atoms.
- 4. A process as in claim 3 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 5. A process as in claim 3 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is an alkoxy alcohol.
- 6. A process as in claim 5 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 7. A process as in claim 5 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is 2-methoxyethanol.
- 8. A process as in claim 7 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 9. A process as in claim 5 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is 2-ethoxyethanol.
- 10. A process as in claim 9 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 11. A process as in claim 5 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is 3-methoxybutanol.
- 12. A process as in claim 11 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 13. A process as in claim 5 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is 3-hydroxytetrahydrofuran.
- 14. A process as in claim 13 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 15. A process as in claim 3 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is an amino alcohol.
- 16. A process as in claim 15 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 17. A process as in claim 15 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is 1-piperidineethanol.
- 18. A process as in claim 17 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 19. A process as in claim 3 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is an alkoxy ester.
- 20. A process as in claim 19 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 21. A process as in claim 19 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is ethyl 4-anisate.
- 22. A process as in claim 21 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 23. A process as in claim 19 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is ethyl 2-anisate.
- 24. A process as in claim 23 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 25. A process as in claim 19 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is ethyl methoxyacetate.
- 26. A process as in claim 25 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 27. A process as in claim 3 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is an amino ester.
- 28. A process as in claim 27 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 29. A process as in claim 3 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is an hydroxy ester.
- 30. A process as in claim 29 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 31. A process as in claim 3 wherein the oxygen containing molecular weight distribution regulator is a diester.
- 32. A process as in claim 31 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 33. A process as in claim 31 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is diethyl phthalate.
- 34. A process as in claim 33 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
- 35. A process as in claim 31 wherein the oxygen-containing molecular weight distribution regulator is diisobutyl phthalate.
- 36. A process as in claim 35 wherein the alkylaluminum cocatalyst is triethylaluminum.
