Claims
- 1. A process for the manufacture of a phosphorus-vanadium catalyst suitable for use in the manufacture of maleic anhydride, which process comprises reacting in an aqueous medium a vanadium compound and inorganic acid, then adding ortho-phosphoric acid to form a soluble vanadium-phosphorus catalyst, removing the acidified water, and adding an aliphatic alcohol having about 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, and either an aromatic acid, or an aromatic anhydride, or a mixture of these, removing the alcohol, and removing the aromatic acid and aromatic anhydride, and drying the catalyst syrup under vacuum of about 0 to about 300 mm Hg at a temperature of about 90.degree. to about 150.degree. C. to produce the solid catalyst.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the vanadium compound is vanadium pentoxide.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein the alcohol is methanol and the inorganic acid is HCl, and the orthophosphoric acid is 85 to 95 percent ortho-phosphoric acid.
- 4. The process of claim 2 wherein the anhydride added is phthalic anhydride.
- 5. The process of claim 2 wherein the anhydride added is trimellitic anhydride.
- 6. The process of claim 2 wherein the acid added is phthalic acid.
- 7. The process of claim 2 wherein the acid added is trimesic acid.
- 8. The process of claim 2 wherein the acid added is hemimellitic acid.
- 9. The process of claim 2 wherein the acid added is pyromellitic acid.
- 10. The process of claim 2 wherein the acid added is benzoic acid.
- 11. The process of claim 2 wherein the acid added is toluic acid.
- 12. A process for the manufacture of a phosphorus-vanadium-metal oxide catalyst suitable for use in the manufacture of maleic anhydride, which process comprises reacting in an aqueous medium a vanadium compound and inorganic acid and metal oxide, then adding ortho-phosphoric acid to form a soluble vanadium-phosphorus-metal oxide catalyst, removing the acidified water, and adding an aliphatic alcohol having about 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, and either an aromatic acid, or an aromatic anhydride, or a mixture of these, removing the alcohol, and removing the aromatic acid and aromatic anhydride, and drying the catalyst syrup under vacuum of about 0 to about 300 mm Hg at a temperature of about 90.degree. to about 150.degree. C. to produce the solid catalyst.
- 13. The process of claim 12 wherein the vanadium compound is vanadium pentoxide.
- 14. The process of claim 13 wherein the alcohol is methanol and the inorganic acid is HCl, and the orthophosphoric acid is 85 to 95 percent ortho-phosphoric acid.
- 15. The process of claim 13 wherein the anhydride added is phthalic anhydride.
- 16. The process of claim 13 wherein the anhydride added is trimellitic anhydride.
- 17. The process of claim 13 wherein the acid added is phthalic acid.
- 18. The process of claim 13 wherein the acid added is trimesic acid.
- 19. The process of claim 13 wherein the acid added is hemimellitic acid.
- 20. The process of claim 13 wherein the acid added is pyromellitic acid.
- 21. The process of claim 12 wherein the acid added is benzoic acid.
- 22. The process of claim 12 wherein the acid added is toluic acid.
- 23. A process for the manufacture of a phosphorus-vanadium-metal oxide catalyst, suitable for use in the manufacture of maleic anhydride, which process comprises reacting in an aqueous medium vanadium compound and inorganic acid and molybdenum oxide, then adding ortho-phosphoric acid to form a soluble vanadium-phosphorus-molybdenum oxide catalyst, removing the acidified water and adding an aliphatic alcohol having about 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, and either an aromatic acid, or an aromatic anhydride, or a mixture of these, removing the alcohol, and removing the aromatic acid and aromatic anhydride, and drying the catalyst syrup under vacuum of about 0 to about 300 mm Hg at a temperature of about 90.degree. to about 120.degree. C. to produce the solid vanadium-phosphorus-molybdenum oxide catalyst.
- 24. The process of claim 23 wherein the vanadium compound is vanadium pentoxide.
- 25. The process of claim 23 wherein the alcohol is methanol.
- 26. The process of claim 23 wherein the anhydride added is phthalic anhydride.
- 27. The process of claim 23 wherein the anhydride added is trimellitic anhydride.
- 28. The process of claim 23 wherein the acid added is phthalic acid.
- 29. The process of claim 23 wherein the acid added is trimesic acid.
- 30. The process of claim 23 wherein the acid added is hemimellitic acid.
- 31. The process of claim 23 wherein the acid added is pyromellitic acid.
- 32. The process of claim 23 wherein the acid added is benzoic acid.
- 33. The process of claim 23 wherein the acid added is toluic acid.
- 34. The process of claim 23 wherein the inorganic acid is HCl.
- 35. The process of claim 24 wherein the ortho-phosphoric cid is 85 to 95 percent ortho-phosphoric acid.
