Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula:

- 3. The compound of claim 1 wherein said polypeptide consists of the polypeptide sequence of a protein containing a C-terminal carboxamide with the C-terminal amino acid omitted.

- 16. An antibody capable of enhancing the rate of hydrolysis of a primary amide bond.
- 17. An antibody capable of enhancing the rate of formation of a primary amide bond.
- 18. An antibody of claim 16 or 17 wherein the antibody is produced by the method comprising the steps of:
(i) generating a gene library of antibody-derived domains; (ii) inserting coding for said domains into a phage expression vector; and
(iii) isolating said catalytic antibodies.
- 19. An antibody of claim 16 or 17 wherein the antibody is produced by the method comprising the steps of:
(i) immunizing an animal with a composition comprising an analog of a reactant, reaction intermediate, or product of the hydrolysis reaction; (ii) removing antibody-producing lymphocytes from said animal; and, (iii) fusing the lymphocytes with myeloma cells and thereby producing hybridoma cells producing the antibody.
- 20. An antibody of claim 16 or 17 wherein said primary amide bond is contained in a polypeptide.
- 21. An antibody of claim 16 or 17 wherein said primary amide bond is contained in a C-terminal carboxamide.
- 22. An antibody of claim 16 or 17 wherein said primary amide bond is contained in a side chain of arginine or glutamine.
- 23. An antibody of claim 16 or 17 wherein said primary amide bond is contained in calcitonin.
- 24. An antibody of claim 16 or 17 wherein said primary amide bond is contained in calcitonin gene-related peptide.
- 25. An antibody of claim 16 or 17 wherein said primary amide bond is contained in big gastrin.
- 26. An antibody of claim 16 or 17 wherein said primary amide bond is contained in bombesin-like peptide.
- 27. An antibody capable of enhancing the rate of hydrolysis or formation of a primary amide bond, said antibody being obtained by the method comprising:
(i) raising antibodies against a hapten (ii) immobilizing said antibodies (iii) adding a substrate to said antibodies, and (iv) identifying antibodies capable of catalyzing the conversion of said substrate to a product.
- 28. The antibody of claim 27 wherein the method further comprises after step (i),
(i) concentrating said antibodies and (ii) purifying said antibodies.
- 29. A method for providing therapy in an individual in need of said therapy comprising administering to said individual an antibody capable of enhancing the rate of hydrolysis of a primary amide bond.
- 30. A method for providing therapy in an individual in need of said therapy comprising administering to said individual an antibody capable of enhancing the rate of formation of a primary amide bond.
