Claims
- 1. A process which comprises hydrogenating the olefinic bond of a .beta.-substituted-.alpha.-acylamido-acrylic acid and/or its salt in the presence of cationic coordination rhodium complexes containing 2 equivalents of an optically active phosphine or arsine ligand per mole of rhodium and a chelating bis olefin.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the hydrogenation is conducted in the presence of a base.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein the .beta.-substituted-.alpha.-acylamido-acrylic acid is represented by the structural formula: ##STR53## wherein, T is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, carboxyl, unsubstituted and substituted alkyl, thienyl, .beta.-indolyl, .beta.-imidazolyl, furyl, piperonyl and ##STR54## B, C and D are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, carboxyl, hydroxyl and their metal salts, alkoxy, halogen, acyloxy, aryloxy, aralkyloxy, amino, alkyl amino, nitro, cyano, Z is selected from the group consisting of substituted and unsubstituted acyl, p, q and r are integers from 0 to 5, provided that the sum of p, q and r does not exceed 5.
- 4. A process according to claim 3 wherein the hydrogenation is conducted in the presence of a base.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 in which the optically active ligand is a phosphine.
- 6. A process according to claim 5 in which the phosphine contains at least one phenyl group that has a substituent in the ortho position selected from the group consisting of hydroxy; alkoxy having at least one carbon atom and a maximum of twelve carbon atoms; and aryloxy.
- 7. A process according to claim 1 in which the .beta.-substituted-.alpha.-acylamido-acrylic acid is a .beta.-(substituted or unsubstituted phenyl)-.alpha.-acylamido-acrylic acid.
- 8. A process of claim 1 wherein said complex is cyclooctadiene-1,5-bis(methylcyclohexyl-o-anisylphosphine) rhodium tetrafluoroborate.
- 9. A process of claim 1 wherein said complex is cyclooctadiene-1,5-bis(methylcyclohexyl-o-anisylphosphine) rhodium tetraphenylborate.
- 10. A process of claim 1 wherein said complex is bicyclo-2.2.1-hepta-2,5-diene-bis(methylcyclohexyl-o-anisylphosphine) rhodium tetrafluoroborate.
