Claims
- 1. A catalytic composition which comprises a mixture of a crystalline chromosilicate and an oxide of chromium, said catalytic composition providing an X-ray diffraction pattern comprising the following X-ray diffraction lines and assigned strengths:

- and having the following composition in terms of mole ratios of oxides:
- 0.9.+-.0.2 M.sub.2/n O:Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 :YSiO.sub.2 :ZH.sub.2 O,
- wherein M is at least one cation having a valence of n, Y is a value within the range of about 4 to about 500, and Z is a value within the range of 0 to about 160.
- 2. The catalytic composition of claim 1, wherein said M is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen ions, metal ions, and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The catalytic composition of claim 1, wherein the value of Y is within the range of about 4 to about 200.
- 4. The catalytic composition of claim 1, wherein the value of Z is within the range of about 0 to about 40.
- 5. The catalytic composition of claim 1, wherein said catalytic composition has been prepared by the method which comprises: (1) preparing a mixture containing an oxide of silicon, a compound of chromium, a hydroxide of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, an alkylammonium cation or a precursor of an alkylammonium cation, and water; (2) maintaining said mixture at suitable reaction conditions to affect formation of a crystalline material, said reaction conditions comprising a reaction temperature within the range of about 25.degree. C. to about 300.degree. C., a pressure of at least the vapor pressure of water at the reaction temperature, and a reaction time that is sufficient to effect crystallization to crystals of said chromosilicate; (3) washing and drying said crystals; and (4) calcining the resulting product in an oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature within the range of about 800.degree. F. (427.degree. C.) to about 1,700.degree. F. (927.degree. C.).
- 6. The catalytic composition of claim 2, wherein M comprises nickel ions and hydrogen ions.
- 7. The catalytic composition of claim 3, wherein the value of Z is within the range of about 0 to about 40.
- 8. The catalytic composition of claim 6, wherein M comprises nickel ions.
- 9. The catalytic composition of claim 7, wherein the value of Y is within the range of about 4 to about 40.
- 10. A method for preparing a catalytic composition, which method comprises: (1) preparing a mixture containing an oxide of silicon, a compound of chromium, a hydroxide of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, an alkylammonium cation or a precursor of an alkylammonium cation, and water; (2) maintaining said mixture at suitable reaction conditions to effect formation of a crystalline material, said reaction conditions comprising a reaction temperature within the range of about 25.degree. C. to about 300.degree. C., a pressure of at least the vapor pressure of water at the reaction temperature, and a reaction time that is sufficient to effect crystallization to crystals of said chromosilicate; (3) washing and drying said crystals; and (4) calcining the resulting product in an oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature within the range of about 800.degree. F. (427.degree. C.) to about 1,700.degree. F. (927.degree. C.).
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein said compound of chromium is Cr.sub.2 (SO.sub.4).sub.3.XH.sub.2 O or Cr(C.sub.2 H.sub.3 O.sub.2).sub.3.H.sub.2 O.
- 12. The method of claim 10, wherein said mixture contains reactants in the following mole ratios of oxides of the reactants:

- wherein R is alkyl and Na.sup.+ is sodium, any other alkali metal, or an alkaline earth metal.
- 13. The method of claim 11, wherein said reaction temperature is within the range of about 150.degree. C. to about 180.degree. C.
- 14. The method of claim 12, wherein said compound of chromium is Cr.sub.2 (SO.sub.4).sub.3.XH.sub.2 O or Cr(C.sub.2 H.sub.3 O.sub.2).sub.3.H.sub.2 O.
- 15. The method of claim 12, wherein said reaction temperature is within the range of about 150.degree. C. toabout 180.degree. C.
- 16. The method of claim 14, wherein said reaction temperature is within the range of about 150.degree. C. to about 180.degree. C.

This application is a continuation-in-part application of co-pending application U.S. Ser. No. 69,236, filed in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Aug. 23, 1979 and now U.S. Pat. No. 4,299,808, which co-pending application is a continuation-in-part application of U.S. Ser. No. 927,843, filed in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on July 25, 1978, and now abandoned. U.S. Ser. No. 927,843 is, in turn, a continuation application of U.S. Ser. No. 733,269, which was filed in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Oct. 18, 1976, and is now abandoned.
