Claims
- 1. A catalyst consisting essentially of (1) at least one compound including copper and chloride atoms; and (2) at least one zeolite; and optionally at least one binder; and optionally at least one oxychlorination modifier selected from the group consisting of alkali metals and their salts, and alkaline earth metals and their salts, the catalyst being prepared by the impregnation to incipient wetness technique, and the catalyst being capable of being employed to selectively produce ethylene and ethylene dichloride from ethyl chloride under reaction conditions.
- 2. A composition of claim 1 which at 250.degree. C. and about atmospheric pressure exhibits controlled coking or no coking in the selective production of ethylene dichloride and ethylene from ethyl chloride.
- 3. A catalyst composition of claim 1, the composition being prepared in such a manner that the surface area is characteristic of a zeolite, and such that the composition exhibits controlled coking under reaction conditions in the presence of an oxygen-containing gas.
- 4. A composition of claim 1 wherein the compound including copper and chlorine is, or converts under reaction conditions to, at least one of copper chloride or copper oxychloride.
- 5. A composition of claim 1 which includes a binding material which is substantially inert under reaction conditions.
- 6. A composition of claim 1 which includes a modifier.
- 7. The catalyst of claim 4 wherein the compound including copper and chlorine is copper chloride.
- 8. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein the zeolite has an average pore diameter of from about 4 to about 11 angstroms.
- 9. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein the zeolite has an average pore diameter of from about 6 to about 10 angstroms.
- 10. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein the zeolite is a faujasite zeolite.
- 11. The catalyst of claim 10 wherein the zeolite is silicalite.
- 12. The catalyst of claim 10 wherein the zeolite is a Y zeolite.
- 13. The catalyst of claim 1 containing between about 0.5 and about 20 weight percent of the compound containing copper and chlorine, calculated as the uncombined copper, based on the dried weight of the zeolite.
- 14. The catalyst of claim 5 wherein the binding material is silica gel.
- 15. The catalyst of claim 6 wherein the modifier is a chloride salt of the alkali metals.
- 16. The catalyst of claim 6 wherein the modifier is employed in an amount from about 0.5 to about 5 weight percent based on the dried weight of the zeolite.
- 17. The catalyst of claim 1 having a surface area of at least about 150 m.sup.2 /g.
- 18. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein the compound including copper and chlorine is copper chloride, the zeolite is silicalite, the binder is silica, and no modifier is employed.
- 19. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein the compound including copper and chlorine is copper chloride, the zeolite is a Y-faujasite, the binder is silical gel, and the modifier is potassium chloride.
