Claims
- 1. A catalyst composition suitable to prepare synthesis gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide by partial oxidation of hydrocarbyl compounds using a source of oxygen comprising molecular oxygen or carbon dioxide which composition comprising a mixture formed by heat treating to a temperature of at least about 500.degree. C., a catalyst precursor composition having formula
- [Mg.sup.2+.sub.w Al.sup.3+.sub.2-y Rh.sup.3+.sub.y (OH).sub.2(w+2) ].sup.2+ CO.sub.3.sup.2- .cndot.mH.sub.2 O
- where y is a number in a range from about 0.00001 to about 1.5; w is a number in a range from about 2 to about 20; and m is 0 or a positive number.
- 2. A catalyst precursor composition comprising at least one hydrotalcite compound having formula
- [Mg.sup.2+.sub.w Al.sup.3+.sub.2-y Rh.sup.3+.sub.y (OH).sub.2(w+2) ].sup.2+ CO.sub.3.sup.2- .cndot.mH.sub.2 O
- where y is a number in a range from about 0.00001 to about 1.5; w is a number in a range from about 2 to about 20; and m is 0 or a positive number.
- 3. A catalyst composition suitable to prepare synthesis gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide by partial oxidation of hydrocarbyl compounds using a source of oxygen comprising molecular oxygen or carbon dioxide which composition comprises a mixture formed by heat treating under reforming conditions to temperatures in a temperature range upward from at least about 400.degree. C., a hydrotalcite compound having formula
- [M.sup.2+.sub.w Al.sup.3+.sub.2-y M.sup.3+.sub.y (OH).sub.2(w+2) ].sup.2+ (A.sup.n-.sub.2/n).cndot.mH.sub.2 O
- where
- M.sup.2+ is at least one divalent metal ion selected from the group consisting of magnesium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, and zinc ions;
- M.sup.3+ is at least one trivalent metal ion selected from the group consisting of titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, gallium, ruthenium, rhodium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, and iridium ions;
- w is a number in a range from about 2 to about 20;
- y is a number in a range from about 0 to about 2;
- A.sup.n- is an anion having a negative charge of n; and
- m is 0 or a positive number.
- 4. The catalyst composition of claim 3 wherein A is carbonate.
- 5. The catalyst composition of claim 3 wherein w is about 4.
- 6. The catalyst composition of claim 5 wherein M.sup.2+ is at least one divalent metal ion selected from the group consisting of magnesium, nickel, and copper ions.
- 7. The catalyst composition of claim 6 wherein M.sup.3+ is at least one trivalent metal ion selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, nickel, ruthenium, rhodium, and iridium ions.
- 8. The catalyst composition of claim 3 wherein the catalyst comprises a mixture formed by heat treating a hydrotalcite compound having formula
- [Ni.sup.2+.sub.4 Al.sup.3+.sub.2 (OH).sub.12 ].sup.2+ CO.sub.3.sup.2- .cndot.mH.sub.2 O.
- where
- m is 0 or a positive number.
- 9. The catalyst composition of claim 3 wherein M.sup.2+ is magnesium ions, and w is about 4.
- 10. The catalyst composition of claim 9 wherein M.sup.3+ is at least one trivalent metal ion selected from the group consisting of titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, gallium, ruthenium, rhodium, lanthanum, and iridium ions.
- 11. The catalyst composition of claim 9 wherein M.sup.3+ is rhodium ions, and y is a number in a range from about 0.00001 to about 1.5.
- 12. The catalyst composition of claim 11 wherein A is carbonate.
- 13. The catalyst composition of claim 9 wherein M.sup.3+ is iron ions, and y is about 2.
- 14. The catalyst composition of claim 3 wherein the catalyst comprises a mixture formed by heat treating a hydrotalcite compound having formula
- [Mg.sup.2+.sub.4 Fe.sup.3+.sub.2 (OH).sub.12 ].sup.2+ CO.sub.3.sup.2- .cndot.mH.sub.2 O
- where m is 0 or a positive number.
- 15. The catalyst composition of claim 14 wherein the heat treating comprises heating the hydrotalcite compound to temperatures in a temperature range from about 500.degree. C. to about 1000.degree. C.
- 16. The catalyst composition of claim 3 wherein the catalyst comprises a mixture formed by heat treating a hydrotalcite compound having formula
- [Mg.sup.2+.sub.4 Fe.sup.3+.sub.2 (OH).sub.12 ].sup.2+ (B.sub.3 O.sub.3 (OH).sub.4).sub.2.sup.2- .cndot.mH.sub.2 O
- where m is 0 or a positive number.
- 17. The catalyst composition of claim 16 wherein the heat treating comprises heating the compound to temperatures in a temperature range upward from about 800.degree. C.
- 18. A catalyst composition suitable to prepare synthesis gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide by partial oxidation of hydrocarbyl compounds using a source of oxygen comprising molecular oxygen or carbon dioxide which composition comprises a mixture formed by heat treating under reforming conditions to temperatures in a temperature range upward from at least about 400.degree. C., a hydrotalcite compound having formula
- [M.sup.2+.sub.w Al.sup.3+.sub.2-y M.sup.3+.sub.y (OH).sub.2(w+2) ].sup.2+ (A.sup.n-.sub.2/n).cndot.mH.sub.2 O
- where
- M.sup.2+ is magnesium ion;
- M.sup.3+ is rhodium or iron ions;
- w is a number in a range from about 2 to about 20;
- y is a number in a range from about 0 to about 2;
- A.sup.n- is an anion having a negative charge of n; and
- m is 0 or a positive number.
- 19. The catalyst of claim 18 wherein M.sup.3+ is rhodium ions, y is a number in a range of about 0.00001 to about 1.5, and w is about 4.
- 20. The catalyst of claim 18 where M.sup.3+ is iron ion, y is about 2, and w is about 4.
- 21. The catalyst of claim 18 where A.sup.n- is carbonate.
