Claims
- 1. A process for partial oxidation of at least one hydrocarbyl compound with a source of oxygen which comprises the steps of
- (A) feeding one or more gaseous or vaporizable hydrocarbyl compounds and an oxygen-containing gas comprising molecular oxygen, carbon dioxide, or mixtures thereof, into a suitable reaction zone containing a catalyst,
- (B) controlling temperatures within the reaction zone to temperatures in a range from about 400.degree. C. to about 1400.degree. C.,
- (C) reacting at least one of the hydrocarbyl compounds in the presence of the catalyst to form partial oxidation products, and expelling a product-containing gas mixture from the reaction zone, and
- (D) recovering from the product-containing mixture a synthesis gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide;
- wherein the catalyst comprises a mixture formed by heat treating a hydrotalcite compound which contains rhodium and wherein heat treating comprises heating the rhodium-containing hydrotalcite compound to temperatures in a temperature range upward from about 400.degree. C.
- 2. The process according to claim 1 wherein at least one of the hydrocarbyl compound is a hydrocarbon having about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms, the partial oxidation is carried out at temperatures within the reaction zone in a range from about 450.degree. C. to about 1250.degree. C.
- 3. The process according to claim 1 wherein partial oxidation of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of methane and ethane is carried out at temperatures within the reaction zone in a range from about 450.degree. C. to about 1250.degree. C.
- 4. The process according to claim 1 wherein the catalyst comprises a mixture formed by heat treating a hydrotalcite compound having formula
- [Mg.sup.2+.sub.4 Al.sup.3+.sub.2-y Rh.sup.3+.sub.y (OH).sub.12 ]CO.sub.3.sup.2- .multidot.mH.sub.2 O
- where y is a number in a range from about 0.00001 to about 1.5; and m is 0 or a positive number.
- 5. The process according to claim 4 wherein the heat treating comprises heating the hydrotalcite compound to temperatures in a temperature range upward from about 450.degree. C.
- 6. The process according to claim 4 wherein partial oxidation of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of methane and ethane is carried out at temperatures within the reaction zone in a range from about 450.degree. C. to about 1250.degree. C.
- 7. The process according to claim 1 wherein the oxygen-containing gas comprising carbon dioxide.
- 8. A process for partial oxidation of at least one hydrocarbyl compound with a source of oxygen which comprises the steps of
- (A) feeding one or more gaseous or vaporizable hydrocarbyl compounds and an oxygen-containing gas comprising molecular oxygen, carbon dioxide, or mixtures thereof, into a suitable reaction zone containing a catalyst,
- (B) controlling temperatures within the reaction zone to temperatures in a range from about 400.degree. C. to about 1400.degree. C.,
- (C) reacting at least one of the hydrocarbyl compounds in the presence of the catalyst to form partial oxidation products, and expelling a product-containing gas mixture from the reaction zone, and
- (D) recovering from the product-containing mixture a synthesis gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide;
- wherein the catalyst comprises a mixture formed by heat treating a hydrotalcite compound having formula
- [M.sup.2+.sub.w Al.sup.3+.sub.2-y M.sup.3+.sub.y (OH).sub.2(w+2) ].sup.2+ (A.sup.n-.sub.2/n).multidot.mH.sub.2 O
- where M.sup.2+ is at least one divalent metal ion selected from the group consisting of magnesium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, and zinc ions; M.sup.3+ is at least one trivalent metal ion selected from the group consisting of titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, gallium, ruthenium, rhodium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, and iridium ions; w is a number in a range from about 2 to about 20; y is a number in a range from about 0.00001 to about 2; A.sup.n- is an anion having a negative charge of n; and m is 0 or a positive number.
- 9. The process according to claim 8 wherein partial oxidation of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of methane and ethane is carried out at temperatures within the reaction zone in a range from about 450.degree. C. to about 1250.degree. C.
- 10. The process according to claim 8 wherein A is carbonate.
- 11. The process according to claim 8 wherein M.sup.3+ is at least one trivalent metal ion selected from the group consisting of titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, gallium, ruthenium, rhodium, lanthanum, and iridium ions.
- 12. The process according to claim 8 wherein M.sup.2+ is at least one divalent metal ion selected from the group consisting of magnesium, nickel, and copper ions.
- 13. The process according to claim 12 wherein M.sup.3+ is at least one trivalent metal ion selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, nickel, ruthenium, rhodium, and iridium ions.
- 14. The process according to claim 13 wherein partial oxidation of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of methane and ethane is carried out at temperatures within the reaction zone in a range from about 450.degree. C. to about 1250.degree. C.
- 15. A process for partial oxidation of at least one hydrocarbyl compound with a source of oxygen which comprises the steps of
- (A) feeding one or more gaseous or vaporizable hydrocarbyl compounds and an oxygen-containing gas comprising molecular oxygen, carbon dioxide, or mixtures thereof, into a suitable reaction zone containing a catalyst,
- (B) controlling temperatures within the reaction zone to temperatures in a range from about 400.degree. C. to about 1400.degree. C.,
- (C) reacting at least one of the hydrocarbyl compounds in the presence of the catalyst to form partial oxidation products, and expelling a product-containing gas mixture from the reaction zone, and
- (D) recovering from the product-containing mixture a synthesis gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide;
- wherein the catalyst comprises a mixture formed by heat treating a hydrotalcite compound having formula
- [Mg.sup.2+.sub.4 Fe.sup.3+.sub.2 (OH).sub.12 ].sup.2+ CO.sub.3.sup.2- .multidot.mH.sub.2 O
- where m is 0 or a positive number.
- 16. The process according to claim 15 wherein the heat treating comprises heating the hydrotalcite compound to temperatures in a temperature range upward from about 450.degree. C.
- 17. The process according to claim 15 wherein partial oxidation of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of methane and ethane is carried out at temperatures within the reaction zone in a range from about 450.degree. C. to about 1250.degree. C.
