Claims
- 1. A cathode composition for a solid oxide fuel cell, comprising:
yttria stabilized zirconia with an active electrocatalyst and reaction products thereof.
- 2. The cathode composition according to claim 1, wherein the active electrocatalyst is selected from the group consisting of a transition metal perovskite of praseodymium, samarium, terbium or neodymium.
- 3. The cathode composition according to claim 2, wherein the active electrocatalyst is a praseodymium cobaltite.
- 4. The cathode composition according to claim 2, wherein the reaction products include at least one zirconate of Pr, Sm, Tb, or Nd.
- 5. The cathode composition according to claim 2, wherein the reaction products include Pr2Zr2O7.
- 6. A process for making a cathode composition for a solid oxide fuel cell, comprising:
mixing yttria stabilized zirconia with an active electrocatalyst to form reaction products thereof.
- 7. The process according to claim 6, wherein the active electrocatalyst is selected from the group consisting of a transition metal perovskite of praseodymium, samarium, terbium or neodymium.
- 8. The process according to claim 7, wherein the active electrocatalyst is PrCoO3 or Pr0.9CoO3.
- 9. The process according to claim 7, wherein the reaction products include a zirconate of Pr, Sm, Tb, or Nd.
- 10. The process according to claim 7, wherein the reaction products include Pr2Zr2O7.
- 11. A solid oxide fuel cell having an oxygen electrode comprising an interpenetrating network of (a) a stabilized zirconia and (b) an electrically-conductive material, optionally having dispersed therein (c) an electrocatalyst different from (b); wherein component (b) or (c) comprises (i) a cobaltite of apraseodymium, samarium, terbium, or neodymium or (ii) a zirconate-containing reaction product of stabilized zirconia and a cobaltite of praseodymium, samarium, terbium, or neodymium.
- 12. The solid oxide fuel cell of claim 11, wherein the cobaltite is a cobaltite of praseodymium.
- 13. The solid oxide fuel cell of claim 11, wherein component (a) is yttrium-stabilized zirconia, ytterbium-stabilized zirconia, or a mixture thereof.
- 14. The solid oxide fuel cell of claim 11, wherein the zirconate-containing reaction product has a conductivity of at least 1 S/cm.
- 15. The solid oxide fuel cell of claim 11, wherein the cobaltite is a strontium-doped cobaltite of praseodymium, samarium, terbium, or neodymium.
- 16. The solid oxide fuel cell of claim 15, wherein component (a) is yttrium-stabilized zirconia, ytterbium-stabilized zirconia, or a mixture thereof.
- 17. The solid oxide fuel cell of claim 11, wherein the oxygen electrode additionally comprises lanthanum manganite, strontium-doped lanthanum manganite, praseodymium manganite, or strontium-doped praseodymium manganite.
- 18. The solid oxide fuel cell of claim 11, wherein the oxygen electrode additionally comprises praseodymium manganite, or strontium-doped praseodymium manganite.
- 19. The solid oxide fuel cell of claim 15, wherein the cobaltite is a cobaltite of praseodymium.
