Claims
- 1. A radio frequency backbone communication system for exchanging a communicated signal between a central site and a remote base site, the radio frequency backbone communication system comprising:
- A) a mobile function transceiver located at the central site that transceives the communicated signal on a shared communication resource allocated by the remote base site, the shared communication resource being otherwise available for exchanging a communicated signal between the remote base site and a user communication unit located in a service coverage area of the remote base site; and
- B) means for synchronizing a transceiver at the remote base site to transceive the communicated signal exchanged between the central site and the remote base site on the shared communication resource.
- 2. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the mobile function transceiver located at the base site further comprises a time division multiple access transceiver.
- 3. The apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising means for repeating the communicated signal at the base site for the benefit of a communication unit located within a service coverage area of the base site.
- 4. A method of exchanging a communicated signal between a central site and a remote base site in a radio frequency backbone communication system, the method comprising the steps of:
- A) transceiving the communicated signal on a shared communication resource allocated by the remote base site, the shared communication resource being otherwise available for exchanging a communicated signal between the remote base site and a user communication unit located in a service coverage area of the remote base site; and
- B) synchronizing a transceiver at the remote base site to transceive the communicated signal exchanged between the central site and the remote base site on the shared communication resource.
- 5. The method as in claim 4 wherein the step of transceiving a communicated signal of the plurality of communicated signals on a shared communication resource of a remote base site of the plurality of base sites under a mobile function format further comprises the step of exchanging the communicated signal under a time division multiple access format.
- 6. The method as in claim 4 further comprising the step of: transceiving the communicated signal at the base site for the benefit of a communication unit within a service coverage area of the remote base site.
- 7. A method of exchanging a communicated signal, on a radio frequency backbone system, between a central site and a remote base site, the method comprising the steps of: A) allocating, by the remote base site, a shared communication resource for exchanging the communicated signal, the shared communication resource being otherwise available for exchanging a communicated signal between the remote base site and a user communication unit located within a service coverage area of the remote base site; and B) exchanging the communicated signal between the central site and the remote base site on the shared communication resource.
- 8. The method as in claim 7 wherein the step of allocating the communication resource further includes the step of; initiating the resource allocation in response to a request requiring communication access between a communication unit and the central site.
- 9. The method as in claim 8 wherein initiating the resource allocation in response to a request requiring communication access between a communication unit and the central site further includes the step of determining that an inter-cell communicated signal must be exchanged.
- 10. The method as in claim 7 further including the step of operating the radio frequency backbone system as a high speed data link.
- 11. The method as in claim 10 wherein the step of operating the radio frequency backbone system as a high speed data link further includes the step of increasing a bit modulation of an encoded signal.
- 12. The method as in claim 10 wherein the step of operating the radio frequency backbone system as a high speed data link includes the step of using eight level FSK encoding.
- 13. The method as in claim 7 further including the step of using the central site as a system tester.
- 14. The method as in claim 13 wherein the step of using the central site as a system tester further includes emulating a communication unit by the central site.
- 15. The method as in claim 13 further including the step of adjusting an interslot timing by communicated timing commands transmitted by the central site to the remote base site.
- 16. An apparatus for exchanging a communicated signal, on a radio frequency backbone system, between a central site and a remote base site, the apparatus comprising: A) means for allocating, at the remote base site, a shared communication resource for exchanging the communicated signal, the shared communication resource being otherwise available for exchanging a communicated signal between the remote base site and a user communication unit located within a service coverage area of the remote base site; and B) means, located at the central site and the remote base site, for exchanging the communicated signal between the central site and the remote base site on the shared communication resource.
- 17. The apparatus as in claim 16 wherein the means for allocating the communication resource further includes means for initiating the resource allocation in response to a request requiring communication access between a communication unit and the central site.
- 18. The apparatus as in claim 17 wherein the means for initiating the resource allocation in response to a request requiring communication access between a communication unit and the central site further includes means for determining that an inter-cell communicated signal must be exchanged.
- 19. The apparatus as in claim 16 further including means for operating the radio frequency backbone system as a high speed data link.
- 20. The apparatus as in claim 19 wherein the means for operating the radio frequency backbone system as a high speed data link further includes means for increasing a bit modulation of an encoded signal.
- 21. The apparatus as in claim 19 wherein the means for operating the radio frequency backbone system as a high speed data link includes means for using eight level FSK encoding.
- 22. The apparatus as in claim 16 further including means for using the central site as a system tester.
- 23. The apparatus in claim 22 wherein the means for using the central site as a system tester further includes means for emulating a communication unit by the central site.
- 24. The apparatus as in claim 16 further comprising means for adjusting an interslot timing by communicated timing commands transmitted by the central site to the remote base site.
