Claims
- 1. A cementitious dry cast mixture comprising hydraulic cement, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, and including a dispersant, wherein said dispersant is a derivatized polycarboxylate dispersant which is a polymer comprising units derived from at least a substituted carboxylic acid monomer or substituted ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and optionally including at least one of an unsaturated hydrocarbon, an N-polyoxyalkylene maleimide, and a condensation product of an unsubstituted carboxylic acid monomer and an alkoxypolyoxyalkylene primary amine substituted carboxylic acid monomer.
- 2. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 1, wherein the dispersant has the general structure:

- 3. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 1, wherein the dispersant level is from about 0.005 to about 0.12% by weight of cement.
- 4. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 1, wherein the hydraulic cement is portland cement.
- 5. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 1 additionally containing a pozzolan.
- 6. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 5, wherein the pozzolan is one of silica fume, a fly ash, calcined clay, and mixtures thereof.
- 7. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 5, wherein the pozzolan is added in an amount from about 5% to about 30% based on the weight of cement.
- 8. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 2, wherein a is from 0 to about 0.6.
- 9. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 8, wherein a is from 0 to about 0.5.
- 10. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 2, wherein b is from about 0.3 to about 1.0.
- 11. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 10, wherein b is from about 0.4 to about 1.0.
- 12. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 2, wherein c is from 0 to about 0.3.
- 13. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 12, wherein c is from 0 to about 0.1.
- 14. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 2, wherein d is from 0 to about 0.3.
- 15. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 14, wherein d is from 0 to about 0.1.
- 16. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 2, wherein a is greater than 0 and c is 0 and d is zero.
- 17. A method for making a dry cast cementitious article comprising:
a. providing a mixture of hydraulic cement, water, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, and including a dispersant, wherein said dispersant is a derivatized polycarboxylate dispersant which is a polymer comprising units derived from at least a substituted carboxylic acid monomer or substituted ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and optionally including at least one of an unsaturated hydrocarbon, an N-polyoxyalkylene maleimide, and a condensation product of an unsubstituted carboxylic acid monomer and an alkoxypolyoxyalkylene primary amine substituted carboxylic acid monomer; and b. forming the article from the mixture.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the dispersant has the general structure:

- 19. The method of claim 17, wherein the dispersant level is from about 0.005 to about 0.12% by weight of cement.
- 20. The method of claim 17, wherein the hydraulic cement is portland cement.
- 21. The method of claim 17, wherein the mixture additionally contains a pozzolan.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the pozzolan is one of silica fume, a fly ash, calcined clay, and mixtures thereof.
- 23. The method of claim 21, wherein the pozzolan is added in an amount from about 5% to about 30% based on the weight of cement.
- 24. The method of claim 17, wherein said forming is one of i) placing said mixture in a mold and vibrating said mold and ii) extruding said mixture through a die.
- 25. A cementitious dry cast mixture comprising hydraulic cement, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, a surface active agent/air entraining agent, and including a dispersant, wherein said dispersant is a derivatized polycarboxylate dispersant which is a polymer comprising units derived from at least a substituted carboxylic acid monomer or substituted ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and optionally including at least one of an unsaturated hydrocarbon, an N-polyoxyalkylene maleimide, and a condensation product of an unsubstituted carboxylic acid monomer and an alkoxypolyoxyalkylene primary amine substituted carboxylic acid monomer.
- 26. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 25, wherein the dispersant has the general structure:

- 27. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 25, wherein the dispersant level is from about 0.005 to about 0.12% by weight of cement.
- 28. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 25, wherein the hydraulic cement is portland cement.
- 29. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 25 additionally containing a pozzolan.
- 30. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 25, wherein the surface active agent/air entraining agent is selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, natural resin, synthetic resin, natural rosin, synthetic rosin, any inorganic air entraining agent, and mixtures thereof.
- 31. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 30, wherein the surface active agent/air entraining agent is selected from the group consisting of alkanolamides, alkanolamines, alkylaryl sulfonates, polyethylene oxide-polypropylene oxide block copolymers, alkylphenol ethoxylates, carboxylates of fatty acids, ethoxylates of fatty acids, sulfonates of fatty acids, sulfates of fatty acids, fluorocarbon containing surfactants, silicon containing surfactants, olefin sulfonates, olefin sulfates, and mixtures thereof.
- 32. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 31, wherein the surface active agent/air entraining agent is selected from the group consisting of ethoxylated nonylphenol, alpha olefin sulfonate, cocamide DEA, and mixtures thereof.
- 33. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 25, wherein the surface active agent/air entraining agent is present in an amount from about 0.001 to about 0.4% based on the weight of the cement.
- 34. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 25, wherein the surface active agent/air entraining agent is present in an amount from about 0.005 to about 0.12 % based on the weight of the cement.
- 35. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 25, wherein the weight ratio of the derivatized polycarboxylate dispersant to the surface active agent/air entraining agent is from about 10:1 to about 1:10.
- 36. The cementitious dry cast mixture of claim 35, wherein the weight ratio of the derivatized polycarboxylate dispersant to the surface active agent/air entraining agent is from about 6:4 to about 4:6.
- 37. A method for making a dry cast cementitious article comprising:
a. providing a mixture of hydraulic cement, water, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, a surface active agent/air entraining agent, and including a dispersant, wherein said dispersant is a derivatized polycarboxylate dispersant which is a polymer comprising units derived from at least a substituted carboxylic acid monomer or substituted ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and optionally including at least one of an unsaturated hydrocarbon, an N-polyoxyalkylene maleimide, and a condensation product of an unsubstituted carboxylic acid monomer and an alkoxypolyoxyalkylene primary amine substituted carboxylic acid monomer; and b. forming the article from the mixture.
- 38. The method of claim 37, wherein the dispersant has the general structure:

- 39. The method of claim 37, wherein the dispersant level is from about 0.005 to about 0.12 % by weight of cement.
- 40. The method of claim 37, wherein the hydraulic cement is portland cement.
- 41. The method of claim 37, wherein the mixture additionally contains a pozzolan.
- 42. The method of claim 37, wherein said forming is one of i) placing said mixture in a mold and vibrating said mold and ii) extruding said mixture through a die.
- 43. The method of claim 37, wherein the surface active agent/air entraining agent is selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, natural resin, synthetic resin, natural rosin, synthetic rosin, any inorganic air entraining agent, and mixtures thereof.
- 44. The method of claim 43, wherein the surface active agent/air entraining agent is selected from the group consisting of alkanolamides, alkanolamines, alkylaryl sulfonates, polyethylene oxide-polypropylene oxide block copolymers, alkylphenol ethoxylates, carboxylates of fatty acids, ethoxylates of fatty acids, sulfonates of fatty acids, sulfates of fatty acids, fluorocarbon containing surfactants, silicon containing surfactants, olefin sulfonates, olefin sulfates, and mixtures thereof.
- 45. The method of claim 44, wherein the surface active agent/air entraining agent is selected from the group consisting of ethoxylated nonylphenol, alpha olefin sulfonate, cocamide DEA, and mixtures thereof.
- 46. The method of claim 37, wherein the surface active agent/air entraining agent is present in an amount from about 0.001 to about 0.4% based on the weight of the cement.
- 47. The method of claim 37, wherein the surface active agent/air entraining agent is present in an amount from about 0.005 to about 0.12% based on the weight of the cement.
- 48. The method of claim 37, wherein the weight ratio of the derivatized polycarboxylate dispersant to the surface active agent/air entraining agent is from about 10:1 to about 1:10.
- 49. The method of claim 48, wherein the weight ratio of the derivatized polycarboxylate dispersant to the surface active agent/air entraining agent is from about 6:4 to about 4:6.
