Claims
- 1. An exterior building product comprising:
an exterior-facing side having an aesthetic appearance, a wall-facing side, and a cross-sectional thickness; said building product further comprising a plurality of layers containing a cementitious mixture, including cement, reinforcing fibers and aggregate; said building product containing a resinous bond promoter disposed at least within an interlaminar region defined by two of said layers in said building product to increase the interlaminar bond strength of said building product.
- 2. The building product of claim 1 wherein said resinous bond promoter comprises an acrylic based resin and water.
- 3. The building product of claim 2 wherein said resinous bond promoter is applied on a first of said plurality of layers prior to joining with a second of said plurality of layers.
- 4. The building product of claim 2 wherein said resinous bond promoter is mixed into said cementitious mixture when said cementitious mixture is in a slurry form.
- 5. The building product of claim 1 wherein said interlaminar bond strength of said siding product is increased at least about 10%.
- 6. The building product of claim 1 wherein said cement comprises Portland cement, said reinforcing fibers comprise cellulose fibers, and said aggregate comprises silica sand.
- 7. The building product of claim 1 wherein said resinous bond promoter increases the Elongation at Break of said siding product by at least about 7%.
- 8. An exterior building product comprising an exterior-facing side having an aesthetic appearance, a building-facing side and a cross-sectional thickness; said building product comprising a plurality of fibercement layers, and a resinous bond promoter disposed between at least a first pair of layers in said plurality of layers to increase the interlaminar bond strength of said building product.
- 9. The building product of claim 8 wherein said resinous bond promoter comprises one or more of: acrylic, polyvinyl alcohol, starch, polyvinyl acetate.
- 10. The building product of claim 1 wherein said plurality of layers comprise first, second and third layers of fibercement, and said resinous bond promoter is disposed between said first and second layers, and between said second and third layers to improve the interlaminar bond between said first, second and third layers.
- 11. The building product of claim 10 wherein said resinous bond promoter is disposed at least in an interlaminar region between said layers and on an exterior facing side portion of said siding or roofing product.
- 12. The building product of claim 8 wherein said resinous bond promoter increases the interlaminar bond strength of said siding product by at least 10%, and increases the Elongation at Break of said siding product by at least 7%.
- 13. An exterior siding or roofing product comprising an exterior-facing side having an aesthetic appearance, a wall-facing side, and a cross-sectional thickness; said siding product comprising a plurality of fibercement layers including cement, cellulosic fibers and silica sand; said siding product containing an acrylic-based bond promoter disposed at least within an interlaminar region proximate to the bond between said layers in said siding or roofing product; said siding or roofing product having an interlaminar bond break stress of at least 10% greater than said siding product would possess without said acrylic-based bond promoter.
- 14. The siding product of claim 13 wherein said siding or roofing product comprises at least about 0.1 wt. % acrylic.
- 15. A method of manufacturing an exterior building product comprising:
a) forming a slurry containing a cementitious mixture including cement, reinforcing fibers and aggregate; b) disposing said slurry onto a porous belt to form a wet, cementitious member having at least two layers therein; c) applying a resinous bond promoter to at least an interlaminar region defined by said two layers; d) de-watering said cementitious member; and e) curing said cementitious member; whereby said resinous bond promoter increases the interlaminar bond strength of said building product.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein said resinous bond promoter comprises one or more of acrylic, polyvinyl alcohol, starch, polyvinyl acetate, and derivatives thereof.
- 17. The method of claim 15 wherein said resinous bond promoter is sprayed onto a first of said two layers before the second of said two layers is layered thereon.
- 18. The method of claim 15 wherein said resinous bond promoter is applied to at least about 50% of the interlaminar region defined by said two layers.
- 19. The method of claim 15 wherein said wet cementitious board is pressed under extreme pressures to form a wood grain thereon, prior to said curing step (e).
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein said pressing step applies a pressure of at least about 100 psi-500 psi to said wet cementitious member.
- 21. An exterior cementitious building product comprising an exterior-facing side having an aesthetic appearance, a rearwardly facing side and a cross-sectional thickness; said building product containing a plurality of layers, wherein each of said layers contain a cementitious mixture, said cementitious mixture including at least cement and reinforcing fibers; and a resinous bond promoter disposed in a sufficient quantity to increase the interlaminar bond strength of said building product while simultaneously improving its resistance to water absorption.
