Claims
- 1. In a distributed network including (1) at least one client device operable to communicate with the network and having a set of resources for processing media content, the resources including a presentation element operable to present media content to a user; (2) a server operable to communicate with the network and operable to receive and fulfill requests for media content; and (3) a storage element operable to communicate with the server and store digital content, the resources associated with the at least one client device, server and storage element collectively defining network resources, the improvement comprising:
a central resource manager operable to communicate with the network and to control network resources as required to fulfill requests for media content; and a power switching system operable to turn the presentation element to an on state or an off state; wherein the central resource manager is operable to determine whether the presentation element is in the on state or the off state to automatically reallocate network resources associated with the presentation means as required to fulfill requests for media content.
- 2. The distributed network of claim 1 wherein the at least one client device includes a power circuit, wherein the presentation element includes a power circuit that is part of the power circuit of the at least one client device, and wherein power switching system comprises:
a power switch inserted in the power circuit of the presentation element, the power switch having first and second positions such that in the first position the presentation element is in the on state and in the second position the presentation element is in the off state; and a remote control unit operative to transmit signals to the at least one client device, which is operable in response to such signals to shift the power switch between the first and second positions.
- 3. The distributed network of claim 2 wherein the at least one client device is a set-top box and the presentation element is a television.
- 4. The distributed network of claim 2 wherein the remote control unit is an IR remote control unit.
- 5. The distributed network of claim 2 wherein the at least one client device is a set-top box, the presentation element is a television, and the remote control unit is an IR remote control unit.
- 6. The distributed network of claim 2 wherein the centralized resource manager is operable to determine whether the power switch is in the first position or the second position.
