Claims
- 1. In a centrifugal clutch having a transmission shaft, a hub coupled to said shaft, a rotatable driven member in outer spaced concentric relation to said shaft, clutch members mounted for relative axial displacement into and out of engagement with one another between said hub and said shaft, and a pressure plate axially displaceable between a cover and an endmost of said clutch members including means biasing said pressure plate in an axial direction away from said clutch members, the improvement comprising:
at least one row of cam members interposed between said cover and said pressure plate wherein said cam members are movable radially outwardly under centrifugal force to cause said pressure plate to move in a direction causing said clutch members to move into clutching engagement with one another; an elongated control rod extending centrally of said housing and being axially slidable with respect to said housing; actuating means between one end of said control rod and said pressure plate being movable in response to axial movement of said control rod to displace said pressure plate in an axial direction independently of said biasing means; and manual control means for selectively advancing and retracting said control rod whereby to disengage said clutch members independently of said cam members.
- 2. In a centrifugal clutch according to claim 1 wherein said cam members are in the form of metal balls and cam retainer means defined by cam faces arranged in at least one row on said cover in facing relation to said pressure plate.
- 3. In a centrifugal clutch according to claim 2 wherein each of said cam faces includes a ramp inclining radially outwardly at an angle in the range of 30° to 50° in a direction toward said pressure plate.
- 4. In a centrifugal clutch according to claim 3 wherein said pressure plate includes a plurality of indented cam faces aligned with said cam faces in said cover to define complementary pairs of said cam faces between said pressure plate and said cover, each said complementary pair receiving one of said cam members therebetween.
- 5. In a centrifugal clutch according to claim 1 wherein said control rod is operative to lock said pressure plate against axial displacement thereby preventing said clutch members from moving into clutching engagement with one another.
- 6. In a centrifugal clutch according to claim 1 wherein said control rod is engageable with said pressure plate to control the degree of pressure exerted by said pressure plate against said clutch plates and thereby regulate slipping engagement as well as complete disengagement between said clutch plates.
- 7. In a centrifugal clutch according to claim 6 wherein a slide member is journaled with respect to said pressure plate and movable into engagement with said pressure plate in response to advancement of said control rod to retain said pressure plate against axial displacement toward said clutch members.
- 8. A centrifugal clutch comprising:
a housing; a transmission shaft, a hub coupled to said shaft, a cover, a rotatable driven member in outer spaced concentric relation to said shaft, clutch members mounted for relative axial displacement into and out of engagement with one another between said hub and said housing, and a pressure plate axially displaceable between said cover; a plurality of cam members interposed between said cover and said pressure plate wherein said cam members are movable radially outwardly under centrifugal force to cause said pressure plate to move in a direction causing said clutch members to move into clutching engagement with one another; cam retainer means between said pressure plate and said cover for retaining said cam members in circumferentially spaced relation to one another whereby to undergo limited radial outward movement at low speeds of rotation to overcome said biasing means and move said clutch members into clutching engagement with one another; and override means including a control rod extending centrally of said housing and being axially slidable with respect to said housing and actuating means between one end of said control rod and said pressure plate being movable in response to advancement of said control rod to move said pressure plate in a direction causing said clutch members to move out of clutching engagement independently of the speed of rotation of said clutch.
- 9. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 8 wherein said cam retainer means is defined by a plurality of indented cam faces arranged in a plurality of concentric rows on said cover in facing relation to said pressure plate.
- 10. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 9 wherein each of said cam faces includes a ramp inclining radially outwardly at an angle in the range of 30° to 50° in a direction toward said pressure plate.
- 11. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 10 wherein said pressure plate includes a plurality of indented cam faces aligned with said cam faces in said cover to define complementary pairs of said cam faces between said pressure plate and said cover, each said complementary pair receiving one of said cam members therebetween.
- 12. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 11 wherein manual override means including said control rod are engageable with said pressure plate to regulate the amount of pressure exerted by said pressure plate on said clutch members independently of the speed of rotation of said clutch.
- 13. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 8 wherein said housing is open-ended at one end and includes circumferentially spaced side walls to which alternate of said clutch members are connected, and said cover includes outward radial projections extending between said side walls, and a retaining ring between said side walls and said cover.
- 14. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 13 wherein said retaining ring is in the form of a snap ring, and said projections include flat surface portions engageable with flat surface portions on said snap ring.
- 15. In a centrifugal clutch of the type having a plurality of cam members interposed between a cover and pressure plate, a housing being open-ended at one end and having a plurality of circumferentially spaced side walls, a hub, a plurality of clutch members mounted for relative axial displacement into and out of engagement with one another between said hub and said side walls, said cam members being movable radially outwardly under centrifugal force to cause the pressure plate to move in a direction forcing said clutch members into clutching engagement with one another, the improvement comprising:
said cover being insertable into the open end of said housing and having circumferentially spaced projections at its outer peripheral edge complementary to said side walls; and a retaining ring inserted in aligned slots on inner surfaces of said side walls at a location to lock said cover in predetermined spaced relation to said pressure plate.
- 16. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 15 wherein manual control means is operative to lock said pressure plate against axial displacement in a direction causing said clutch members to move into clutching engagement with one another.
- 17. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 15 wherein said housing is open-ended at one end and includes circumferentially spaced side walls to which alternate of said clutch members are connected, and said cover includes outward radial projections extending between said side walls, and a retaining ring between said side walls in said cover.
- 18. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 17 wherein said retaining ring is in the form of a snap ring, and said projections include flat surface portions engageable with a flat surface portion on said snap ring.
- 19. A centrifugal clutch having a rotary member to be driven, a hub coupled to said rotary member, a rotatable housing having an open end in outer spaced concentric relation to said rotary member, clutch members mounted for relative axial displacement into and out of engagement with one another between said hub and said housing, and a pressure plate axially displaceable between a cover and said clutch members; a plurality of cam members interposed between said cover and said pressure plate being movable radially outwardly at a predetermined speed of rotation to force said pressure plate axially away from said cover and in a direction causing said clutch members to move into clutching engagement with one another including cam guide means between said pressure plate and said cover for guiding the radial movement of said cam members; pressure limiting means between said cover and said pressure plate to prevent shock loads from being imparted to said clutch members when said clutch members are in clutching engagement with one another; and said cover being mounted in substantially flush relation to said open end of said housing.
- 20. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 19 wherein said housing has circumferentially spaced side walls and said cover has circumferentially spaced projections complementary to said side walls, and means for locking said cover to said side walls.
- 21. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 20 wherein said locking means is defined by a snap ring inserted into aligned slots in said side walls.
- 22. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 21 wherein said retaining ring is defined by a snap ring.
- 23. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 22 wherein said snap ring consists of a plurality of plies of metal.
- 24. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 19 wherein manual override means is engageable with said pressure plate to modulate the pressure applied by said pressure plate to said clutch members.
- 25. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 24 wherein said manual override means is operative to displace said pressure plate away from said clutch members independently of the speed of rotation of said clutch.
- 26. A centrifugal clutch according to claim 25 wherein said manual override means is further operative to disengage said clutch members independently of the speed of rotation of said clutch.
