Claims
- 1. A ceramic composite electrolytic device for generating electrical power or for generating oxygen comprising:a plurality of electrically connected solid state electrolytic cells, each of said cells comprising: a ceramic composite body with first and second electrically conductive porous gas permeable electrode layers on opposite surfaces of said ceramic composite body, said first layer forming an anode and said second layer forming a cathode, and a bipolar metal member for engagement with said ceramic composite body of said cell on one side, and with said ceramic composite body of another adjacent cell on the other side, said ceramic composite body further comprising a metal member having a regular pattern of openings formed within a center portion of the metal member for supporting a ceramic material, said device further comprising a power connection connecting the output of said cell, and an air supply to said cathode of said cell, further comprising a thermal shell having first, second and third concurrent metal layers in part surrounding said ceramic composite cells which are stacked in electrical series and gas parallel surrounded buy shock absorbing and insulating materials.
- 2. The device of claim 1, wherein the pattern of openings formed within said center portion of said metal member for supporting said ceramic material is a hexagonal close pack cell pattern.
- 3. The device of claim 1, further comprising:an output for removing exhaust generated in said cell; and a heat unit for heating said plurality of cells to a desired reaction temperature.
- 4. The device of claim 3, wherein the heat unit comprises an electrically resistive wire.
- 5. The device of claim 3, wherein the metal member of said ceramic composite body member, is comprised of a metal selected from the group consisting of: stainless steels, Fe based alloys, Ni based alloys, austentic, martensitic, ferritic and duplex, silver, silver alloys, superalloys and high nickel alloys; and mixtures thereof.
- 6. The device of claim 3, wherein the bipolar metal member has three dimensional structures on its surface.
- 7. The device of claim 6, wherein the bipolar metal member is comprised of a metal selected from the group consisting of stainless steels, Fe based alloys, Ni based alloys, austentic, martensitic, ferritic and duplex, silver, silver alloys, superalloys and high nickel alloys; and mixtures thereof.
- 8. The device of claim 6, wherein the bipolar metal member is formed from an alloy comprising nickel and chrome.
- 9. The device of claim 6, wherein the bipolar metal member is formed from an alloy comprising iron and chrome.
- 10. The device of claim 8, wherein the alloy further comprises aluminum.
- 11. The device of claim 9, wherein the alloy further comprises aluminum.
- 12. The device of claim 3, further comprising an electrical contact layer on the surface of the bipolar metal member.
- 13. The device of claim 11, wherein the electrical contact layer is comprised of silver and a second metal selected from the group consisting of: gold; platinum; palladium; iridium; and mixtures thereof.
- 14. The device of claim 3, further comprising at least one arm extending from the ceramic composite body.
- 15. The device of claim 14, wherein the arm comprises a fluid fuel input.
- 16. The device of claim 14, wherein the arm comprises a gas output.
- 17. The device of claim 3, further comprising a current collector which is in electrical communication with the three dimensional structures of the bipolar metal member of said cell and said adjacent cell.
- 18. The device of claim 3, further comprising solid fuel disposed between the bipolar metal member and the metal member of said ceramic composite body member.
- 19. The device of claim 18, wherein the solid fuel is selected from the group consisting of: carbon powder, charcoal briquette, titanium, titanium aluminide, carbide, hydride, and mixtures thereof.
- 20. The device of claim 18, wherein the solid fuel is selected from the group consisting of: aluminum carbide and borohydride and mixtures thereof.
- 21. The device of claim 6, wherein the three dimensional structures are embossed.
- 22. A ceramic composite electrolytic device for generating electrical power or for generating oxygen comprising:a plurality of electrically connected solid state electrolytic cells, each of said cells comprising: a ceramic composite body with first and second electrically conductive porous gas permeable electrode layers on opposite surfaces of said ceramic composite body, said first layer forming an anode and said second layer forming a cathode, and a bipolar metal member for engagement with said ceramic composite body of said cell on one side, and with said ceramic composite body of another adjacent cell on the other side, said ceramic composite body further comprising a metal member having a regular pattern of openings formed within a center portion of the metal member for supporting a ceramic material, said device further comprising a power connection connecting the output of said cell, and an air supply to said cathode of said cell, further comprising: a fan for supplying the air; wherein: said bipolar metal member and said metal member of said ceramic composite body interconnected at a gas tight seal surrounding said ceramic material to form a fuel chamber and together forming an output for removing exhaust generated in said fuel chamber of said cell; and a fuel supplied to said plurality of cells for reacting with said plurality of interconnected cells to generate electrical power or oxygen within said fuel chamber.
- 23. The device of claim 22, wherein the gas tight seal is formed by welding.
- 24. The device of claim 23, wherein the embossed structures are dimples.
- 25. The device of claim 22, wherein pattern of openings formed within said center portion of said metal member for supporting said ceramic material is a hexagonal close pack cell pattern.
- 26. The device of claim 1 or 22, wherein metal member of said ceramic composite body member, has a ceramic coating thereon.
- 27. The device of claim 26, wherein the ceramic coating is comprised of zirconia.
- 28. The device of claim 27, wherein the ceramic coating is further coated with electrocatalyst layer.
- 29. The device of claim 28, wherein the electrocatalyst layer is a mixture of solid electrolyte particles and transition metal oxide particles.
- 30. The device of claim 29, wherein the solid electrolyte particles comprise stabilized zirconia or stabilized ceria; and the transition metal oxide particles comprise ruthenium oxide, or iridium oxide.
- 31. The device of claim 27, further comprising an electrocatalyst layer between the electrode layer and the ceramic composite body.
- 32. The device of claim 1 or 22, wherein said cell further comprises at least one metallic frame supporting said bipolar member.
- 33. The device of claim 1 or 22, further comprising:an output for removing exhaust generated in said cell; a heat unit for heating said plurality of cells to a desired reaction temperature; a fan for supplying air; a ceramic coating on the metal member of said ceramic composite body member; a fuel supplied to said plurality of cells for reacting with said plurality of interconnected cells to generate electrical power or oxygen; an electrocatalyst layer, comprised of a mixture of solid electrolyte particles and transition metal oxide particles, disposed on the ceramic coating; at least one arm extending from the ceramic composite body; a metallic frame supporting said bipolar member; a current collector, which is in electrical communication with the three dimensional structures of the bipolar metal member of said cell and said adjacent cell; wherein: the bipolar metal member has three dimensional structures on its surface, and the bipolar metal member is comprised of a metal selected from the group consisting of: stainless steel, Fe based alloys, Ni based alloys, austentic stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel, and duplex, silver, silver alloys, superalloys and high nickel alloys; nickel chromium alloy and mixtures thereof; and the metal member of said ceramic composite body member and the frame are comprised of a metal selected from the group consisting of: stainless steel; iron, nickel alloys, austentic stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel, and duplex, silver, silver alloys, superalloys and high nickel alloys; stainless steels with chromium and aluminum; nickel-chromium-aluminum-iron alloy; and mixtures thereof.
- 34. The device of 33, further comprising:a fluid fuel input in an arm; a gas output in an arm; wherein: the fluid fuel input and the gas output are in the same or different arms; said bipolar metal member and said metal member of said ceramic composite body interconnected at a gas tight seal surrounding said ceramic material to form a fuel chamber and together forming an output for removing exhaust generated in said fuel chamber of said cell; the ceramic coating is comprised of zirconia; the solid electrolyte particles are selected from the group consisting of stabilized zirconia, stabilized ceria, and mixtures thereof; and the transition metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of ruthenium oxide, iridium oxide, and mixtures thereof; the electrode layer comprises silver; and the bipolar metal member is formed from an alloy selected from the group consisting of: nickel and chrome; nickel, chrome and aluminum; iron and chrome; iron, chrome and aluminum; and mixtures thereof; and the metal member of said ceramic composite body has a thickness of from 0.001 to 0.008 inches.
- 35. The device of claim 33, further comprising:solid fuel disposed between the bipolar metal member and the metal member of said ceramic composite body member; wherein: the ceramic coating is comprised of zirconia; the solid electrolyte particles are selected from the group consisting of stabilized zirconia, stabilized ceria, and mixtures thereof; and the transition metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of ruthenium oxide, iridium oxide, and mixtures thereof; the electrode layer comprises silver; and the bipolar metal member is formed from an alloy selected from the group consisting of: nickel and chrome; nickel, chrome and aluminum; iron and chrome; iron, chrome and aluminum; and mixtures thereof; and the metal member of said ceramic composite body has a thickness of from 0.001 to 0.008 inches.
- 36. The device of claim 35, wherein said bipolar metal member and said metal member of said ceramic composite body interconnected at a gas tight seal surrounding said ceramic material to form a fuel chamber and together forming an output for removing exhaust generated in said fuel chamber of said cell.
- 37. The solid state, electrolytic cell of 36, wherein said bipolar metal member and said metal member of said ceramic composite body interconnected at a gas tight seal surrounding said ceramic material to form a fuel chamber and together forming an output for removing exhaust generated in said fuel chamber of said cell.
- 38. The device of claim 3 or 22, wherein the metal member of said ceramic composite body has a thickness of from 0.001 to 0.008 inches.
