Claims
- 1. A chair comprising:
a base, a seat, and a reclineable back operably connected together to form a seating unit providing synchronous motion of the seat upon recline of the back; and armrests pivoted to the seating unit at armrest pivots for movement between a horizontal use position where the armrests extend forward of the back and a vertical use position where the armrests extend vertically from the armrest pivots, the armrests when in the storage positions being located substantially behind a front surface of a lumbar area of the back.
- 2. The chair defined in claim 1, wherein the back includes armrest-supporting structure that defines a horizontal pivot located rearward of the front surface of a lumbar area of the back.
- 3. The chair defined in claim 1, wherein the seating unit defines up and down surfaces adapted to mateably nestingly engage for high density storage, and the armrests when in the vertical storage position cooperate to permit said high density storage.
- 4. The chair defined in claim 3, wherein armrests, when in the use position, include an enlarged top surface for supporting a seated user's forearm and further include a downwardly extending reinforcement flange, the enlarged top surface and the reinforcement flange defining a combined shape that is configured to matingly engage an identically shaped armrest on an identical chair when nested thereagainst.
- 5. A base for a chair, comprising:
structural side members each including front and rear legs; a structural transverse member rigidly interconnecting the structural side members; and at least one of the structural members including an elongated hollow section with a longitudinally-extending internal cavity, the hollow section having a non-uniform cross section at different longitudinal locations, the hollow section being formed of molded plastic material capable of being molded by a gas-assisted injection molding process.
- 6. A chair component for supporting a seated user, such as is usable to support a seated user's back, buttocks or forearms, comprising:
a relatively flat one-piece component shaped to support a body part of a seated user; the component including a relatively-stiff perimeter section defining a ring area and a sheet-like flexible panel filling the ring area and extending between different portions of the perimeter section, the perimeter section having a tubular construction and including a longitudinally-extending internal cavity that extends around the perimeter section to provide a high strength to weight ratio, and the flexible panel being integrally formed of material bonded to the perimeter section but being relatively thin and further including slots arranged to provide flexure to the flexible panel for improved comfort to a seated user.
