Claims
- 1. An active pixel sensor device with charge balancing, comprising:
- an array of active pixel sensor photodetectors;
- a column parallel array of analog to digital successive approximation type converters, each of said analog to digital converters associated with one or more columns of active pixel sensors, wherein said analog to digital converter operates in the charge domain; and
- a double sampling system, which matches A/D characteristics between columns.
- 2. A device as in claim 1, wherein said successive approximation converter includes a plurality at scaled capacitors to hold said charge.
- 3. A device as in claim 2, wherein said analog to digital converters use a charge balancing approach which accumulates charge on two branches of a circuit and attempts to equalize said charge between said branches.
- 4. A device as in claim 3, wherein said system compares a first signal on one of the branches to a second signal on another of the branches, and said signal on said one of said signals is analog.
- 5. A device as in claim 3, wherein said system compares a first signal on one of the branches to a second signal on another of said branches, and wherein said first signal is digital.
- 6. A device as in claim 3, wherein the system compares a first signal on a first of the branches to a second signal on a second of said branches, and changes the second signals to match said one of said signals, wherein said changing comprises obtaining a reference signal, and dividing said reference signal using capacitors.
- 7. A device as in claim 1, wherein said active pixel sensor photodetectors include a buffer transistor in each pixel.
- 8. A device as in claim 2, wherein both said signal and said reset are sampled using a single amplifier.
- 9. A device as in claim 8, wherein said single amplifier is an operational amplifier.
- 10. A device as in claim 2, wherein said capacitors are matched to balance charge therebetween.
- 11. A method of operating an image sensor, comprising:
- arranging a plurality of photoreceptors into an array;
- associating an analog to digital converter with at least one full column of the array;
- operating said analog to digital converters in a charge mode, successive approximation operation, by obtaining a reference charge, and dividing said reference charge in powers of two by using matched capacitors to divide said reference charge; and
- using said reference charge to effect an analog to digital conversion.
- 12. A method as in claim 11, further comprising carrying out correlated double sampling on at least a plurality of the analog to digital converters, to minimize value differences between the analog to digital converters.
- 13. A method as in claim 12, wherein said analog to digital conversions operate by charge balancing among the columns.
- 14. A method as in claim 13, wherein said analog to digital conversions comprise a signal line and a reference line, and equalizes said signal line to said reference line.
- 15. A method as in claim 14, wherein said signal line and reference line are compared using a single operational amplifier.
- 16. An active pixel sensor, comprising:
- an array of photodetectors arranged into functional units including rows and columns; and
- a plurality of analog to digital converters, each said analog to digital converter associated with at least one whole unit, said analog to digital converters being charge domain successive approximation A/D converters which obtain a current signal in the charge domain, and a reference signal in the charge domain, and which compare said current signal to said reference signal to effect an A/D conversion.
